When we left our local council there was NO COSTS at all, and if you are end of contract then there shouldn't be any costs.

I think they are to. I would speak to other resellers and see if you can move and also ask how their prices work.

I believe it is being continued, I'm sure they have said they are continuing with it.

We have 10 VDI "Personal Desktops" in place hear, mainly in the offices. We used pooled ones initially but they weren't worth it, as people would be asking for different software on theirs and then you had to recreate the pool (overnight but still). however pooled takes up much less HDD space as you can imagine. We also have 40 clients that go through only one RDS Session server, which are all perfectly good for basic usage, such as web browsing, office etc. They are even good for some Adobe stuff. You need to make sure your infrastructure is good enough if you go down this route, we can see some differences in speed in the remote clients.

Your not missing anything, Windows 8 just isn't supported yet. it is pretty ridiculous, I believe UAG detects it as a Windows NT device... This is a real issue when you want to see if a Windows tablet could work with UAG to offer file access and programs etc.

We have 40 of them here, in 3 years we have replaced 3 main boards (1 under warranty). Never had a duff PSU. Our look fine, and have stood up fine to the use of students, but ours are in wooden holders under the desks (so proper ICT furniture) which in my opinion dramatically extends the life of any computer. You get what you pay for, when you save nearly £3k across an ICT suite for an equivalent spec from HP or Dell for example then replacing 1 or 2 mainboards a year is still a massive cost saving.

Sounds like everything isn't published properly, it is all done with internal info only, can you access the computer everything is published through remotely, e.g ping it.

Assuming your guests are on a separate SSID, and separate VLAN (which they may or may not be), then you could make Smoothwall give out IPs on the guest SSID int he correct range, and make your DHCP not hand otu those addresses. You could then do some messing on the Smoothwall box to redirect any internal things, well internally, and also use ident by IP on just that range. No need to use a WPAD.dat I don't think. We have a similar setup here, (except our Smoothwall uses an entirely separate range for our "Guests"), but internally hosted sites are still all handled internally, such as the VLE etc. It is done int he Zone Bridging section.

So when at home, it says cannot connect to the computer? But it is fine in work except for the lack of SSO? Have you tried using the apps through the RD Web Access (I assume it still sets it up)?

I think the problem is, what your asking for can so easily be sold because it really would be a real convenience. If this issue is after you have imaged the computers then why not add the drivers to the image? WDS for example has support for this, you could also add them to CDs etc if you wanted to. I know this requires the initial work to be completed by you but you can make it so you only need to do it once. If you are struggling to find out what you are finding a driver for use something like PCI database (PCI Vendor and Device Lists) and then search by ID.

Eric When we bought our iPods apple engraved them all for free and price matched other resellers. However I think you may be making the same mistake as I did, don't contact Apple Uk directly, they are useless, contact the nearest store to you and speak with the business manager there. If you order this way, you also find there can be a few other perks like queue jumping (with no appointment necessary) when you need to visit the "Genius" bar because the devices are broke etc, well that is my experience. On the new version this can even be done through a web GUI, but it has been a while since I have done this. I just remember it all changing and thinking it was a good idea.

Fill me full of confidence why don't you. I haven't actually had any input in which system we are going to use, just been tasked with getting it working.

As James knows, I've spoke to him, we have recently put in 45 thin clients (Session based) and then 10 through virtual desktops. We used custom specced server, so they are a higher spec then though he uses.

Interesting we mirror our projectors so didn't realise that a second screen might not be interactive. I have never tried, though I might try this lunchtime just so I can see for myself to be honest because that sounds like a really poor feature. You can save the smart files as powerpoints but that kind of defeats the points of them being interactive.

Yep, you can sometimes get them free with switches though, and if you buy a few switches at once get your reseller to ask the manufacturer to throw them in. I think we have about 40 of them in total here probably more and I have paid for about 10.

Nope the modules were plug and play for us. You have to config the VLANs ofcourse.

I don't have the exact same model D-Link but I have found any SFPs work with them. We have D-Link, HP and Netgear (mostly these) SFP modules working with ours.

I went round ESSA a while back (about a year) when they had ipods for every student and I thought it was a total waste of money because they were so limited in what they could achieve of them. iPads could be different if on a 1:1 basis. They handled breakages through insurance, but said they were thinking of dropping that and the school "insuring" them for a fee. Which in reality was the school collecting a pot of money to cover costs and hoping it didn't cost more per year but seems like a good idea to me if you have limited breakages. Interestingly when you are taken round the school, you were only shown where the technology was at it's best, we never saw an English, Maths or even a History or Geography lesson and there was a whole area devoted to this. We were shown all the "shared learning areas" which all visitors from our school couldn't see how it worked, it was way to noisy. In Art a pupil was copying from an iPad (as shown in the video I think), it's not really teaching Art or using a £400 device in my opinion. They don't teach in the traditional way at the school, it was quite odd to me (but I went to a traditional grammar school), I struggled to see what they were being taught in most lessons (in the shared area), I also thought teaching science through videos and interactive programs is boring, proper experiments are more engaging! Staff there created content for the pupils on Macbook Pros or Macbook Airs, the iPads weren't used for that and in a lot of cases couldn't be. Interestingly they use a few Windows servers to RDP into for the Admin staff, they had SIMS for example. The IT support at the time was outsourced but not by choice, they had been forced into signing up with Northgate when they became an Academy so it was a total waste of money, we managed to briefly speak to a Tech and he said he did nothing all day. But this was going to be moved in-house in future (and probably is now). So you can't blame the school for the money wasted here really, it sounded like the school had one idea and they were told they must get support from elsewhere. The video wall is about 12 TVs with a PS3 behind each screen to achieve that, expensive for what it is. They also have a 3D room, which was an even more expensive novelty, even if it was impressive to see, the limited uses of it couldn't justify the costs. Overall, I think I am against the idea but then maybe I have a traditional approach to schools and this modern approach may be the way forward, or may not be. My major concerns would be costs of Apps (you can't force pupils to buy them), and who replaces the iPads when they are out of date and to slow to use? The idea was also being driven heavily by 2 or 3 people and they were doing a good job promoting it, what happens if they leave?

We have 35 points, our DB is 3GB and this has been running for a couple of years. Our DB did get huge at one point, for an unexplained reason but a reinstall of Unifi itself fixed this, we reinstalled straight over the top, reusing the same database if i remember correctly. I think there was a fault in our config that made it get bigger (I checked in the MongoDB logs) and the reinstall fixed it again.

No that it helps, but we have the same issue. I don't think it has always happened though (back in 2010 it didn't), although it has been happening for a long time.
