On topic I don't think changing the times actually help unless they reduce actual teaching hours from say 37.5 hours a week, or support staff actual hours. Less contact time doesn't result in less salary as such. We have a reduced time on a Thursday, and the teaching staff still stay till 4 anyway. So their is no cost savings, you need to reduce actuall salaries to save real amounts of money, as staffing costs is the biggest cost in schools. Which is what is already happening! With all dure respect to the schools (I have worked in Grammars, their secondary siblings and a "normal" secondary), the behaviour in each varies hugely, in general grammar school students are better behaved and it is a sliding scale to their secondary siblings because inevitably the more challenging children are less academically able, cause more disruption for everyone and might make a more able student progress less. I understand that levels of progress are now measured, and we are better then some grammars on that measurement but that doesn't mean that the school doesn't suffer from the issues I highlighted before.

We have a grammar school system here, the grammar schools are great for the more able with parents who push them. Which results in a school full of the more able, with parents isnterested in their students learning and they get better results. There is no argument, this is a fact. The consequence is that the "other" schools then have the students who are less able and struggle more in school, those whose parents aren't as interested in getting their children into the better schools. Which then results in a school that is worse then the equivalent school now. You create a 3 tier "state" school system. It benefits the best, and disadvantages the others.

One issue I have, is that having been getting prices. Netgear/ D-Link who are considered the lower end vendors, there prices for the higher end kit isn't a mile off the likes of HP. So either people are getting much better prices then I am, or times have changed more. For example M6100 chassis, when you fill them as wanted, comapred to HP chassis come out at similar prices, not a big discount as everyone is talking or implying. Huawei suppliers seem few and far between in the UK. Brocade haven't bothered to even get back to me. Unifi, there is supply problems (not fully surprised to be fair) but it means I couldn't get them done in Easter as I was planning originally. There is so much inconsistancy between manufacturers and then resellers. Makes you wonder why you bother sometimes.

I would suggest, if you are going down the Surface route, then RDS is less needed. Surface space isn't too bad ont eh 64GB model as long as you train/ teach your staff well. If from home they use RDS and then in school use the network shares like normal then as long as your wifi is good enough then the space won't be sued up. The key is getting teaching staff to use the network for storage as oppose to local drives.

Some programs/ websites need to be exceptions as oppose to being whitelisted because they can't see the Kerberos or NTLM details. If you swap your proxy on the mac to be one where you have to type in your username and password instead (usually uses port 8080 on smoothwall), then see if it instead asks you to type that in. It's not Office 2016 trying to go online and your school is using Kerberos Authenication is it. First run with Office does that how to update check and maybe even an activation check, that might be erroring/ not support Kerberos hence the issue.

How are the ends attached? Often they are glued, not spliced, the glue can degrade over time, and they you unplugging and replugging might have been the final straw, thats just make the end disconnect.

What concerns me with the Unifi is how managed is managed, for example currently we have very little setup on our switches, two VLANs, thats about it. STP etc on. However we have 2 x Cisco 3750 switches in a stack as our core, they can do a lot more (except one seems a little dodgy). I can't get it replaced and taken out because we have no alternative to use while it gets sorted. Theya re also limited to 1GB only. If I swapped to Unifi then I might be limiting myself in the future, right now I know they will be fine as long as they are reliable and heck I could buy 4 switches when I only need 3 for example but in 5 years time will they still suffice? Can they definitely LAG the ports together properly amongst other questions. Maybe I should take a punt. I was one of the first to use the WiFi points, when it was me and @m25man singing their prasies against most others and they are still good to this day.

@richbrowncardiff is using them, or has just started to. I'm a big fan of Unifi, but the switches are still a little new for me to risk (mainly because im looking at my core), edge switches I would use them.

If it is something that is needed right now, e.g your smoothwall isn't working then use your account manager to make things happen quickly. Yes, you can use Powershell to add users to "personal" OneDrives as such, then a teacher could open the drive using a link to it. It would be quite complicated though I think. I only know because we have an admin account that has access to every drive

It's not bad, as it it doesn't report stuff. The problems I find are, firstly it takes a lot of getting use to and finding what seems quite basic can be overly complicated so you go round it circles and its frustrating. Secondly, to many false positives in the Safeguarding feature at the moment, although Inverness is meant to have fixed that!
