Surely part fo the problem with upping to 200 might be that your current line is only a 100 bearer, so there might be a massive installation cost, just a thought. We moved away from our LEA years ago

I know this is a Necro-Thread but having recommended Savilles multiple times in the past. I can't anymore, I have given up with trying to get anything from them. We bought a projector from them with a "free lamp" voucher, we registered the voucher as requested. Two years pass and now a new lamp is needed, when we asked about it, they wanted the old lamp from the projector to be sent to them before they would send a replacement, and it could take upto 2 weeks. Obviously we couldn't accept that, so we bought a replacement ourselves ready, so that when the bulb did go there would be no wait. 3 months later the bulb have given up the ghost totally, the replacement is put in the projector. I emailed Savilles, I'm told to return the bulb with the voucher etc. I pop to the post office and post the bulb, and less then 4 hours later (so the bulb is proably in the post office still). An email from Savilles, our service department now can't find record of you regsitering your voucher, so we aren't going to replace the bulb... Your voucher is useless and there is no way to prove I phoned them over two years ago. The "free lamp" voucher is at best impractical, because you have to live with a projector with no bulb for over 2 weeks while they replace, but in reality is worthless and impossible to use because they cna simply claim you never registered so aren't replacing it, and because of the passage of time, there is nothing you can do I would suggest avoiding them, and their offers if at all possible there are better companies out there to deal with.

Im sorry but even 1:1 device deployments, I don't think it is right to ask parents to contribute in any way. State education is meant to be free and everyone has different restraints on their finances, some students might not be pupil premium but still have parents with little to no disposable income. If you go 1:1 I am a firm beliver of the school providing the devices (no matter which flavour) and then if after 5 years they want to let the students keep them then thats there choice. If they are half and half owned, who replaces it if it breaks, gets stolen etc does both parties pay half, so your asking for more money? Do you the school have to buy insurance? Do you force everyone to contribute to isnurance, if so you just gave a parent another cost for the "free" education. That is more an issue of principle as oppose to anythign else though.

We have tried 3 ways, once with a VicTsing adaptor (https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B018Q10GOO/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) but it was unsuccessful, I think it was faulty but didnt have time to get a replacement as we had a surface unit on trial, so we got a refund. These devices could be switched between using Miracast and Airplay so seemed the perfect solution, you might get luckier with them. We have used AirServer, which notably requires a laptop/ desktop in the classroom but is good for an short term solution if your projectors don't have a HDMI port on them. The most success we have had with our Surfaces was using Microsoft's own Wireless Display Adapter, the cons are the projector needs a HDMI and either a 2nd nearby plug or a powered USB socket. A lot of newer ones have USB ports now. Even with this adapter though we have had a couple of issues, which were improved with frimware updates, but they still need to be cast to twice usually before the connection stays live, once its connected I think we had 1 drop out over a month or use which is acceptable to me. A quick reconnect fixed it. The con is they are also more expensive that the generic ones as above. Streaming to the projectors works even better if your projectors have audio out on them as well to speakers (we are looking at doing that this summer), because then you remove the need for a VGA/ HDMI and an audio lead to go to where the teacher is sitting, which all our staff noticed. An advantage with the VicTsing and Microsoft Adaptor is also that the video and audio stream is direct between the dongle and the surface tablet, so it shouldn't hit your wifi much, the MS one operates on 5GHz the VicTsing used 2.4GHz. Just another consideration if you needed one!

I often wonder what people do to mechanical disks, describing 8 disks as a "very high risk" of failure is completely misleading. People ran mechanical disks for years and years and rarely had failures, some people haven't ever had any.

I've never seen Lin2ICT notes because i'm not a Birmingham school, I have had problems before in the past though, and those are the things I always check for the type of error you have had. Usually when I update now, I copy the old Admin and Facility folder to a backup location (or whatever you have them called) and just install over the top of them. The only problem is usually the redirect file and API needs sorting.

From your backed up copy of ePortal, in the ePortal folder there is one called bin then win32 then i386, I believe from memory. I usually just copy all the files (about 3) from there and over the ones in the "new" installation. Even if you install over the top of your old ePoral, both the API file and these files will need replacing. Usually the settings.xml etc stay fine. If that doesn't work, I would suggest double checking that within IIS there is still a symlink to "jakarta" as basically IIS can't handle .js files, so ePortal works by redirecting it to the apache installation. If that doesn't work you might need to contact Advanced i'm afraid, hard to help much more on a forum.

Doing the upgrade this morning, we regards to the index.jsp downloading. I'm assuming IE gives you a page error, Chrome and Firefox download the .jsp. If so then you might need to replace the redirect file, I think on 64bit servers you need to replace it and on 32bit you don't. it might be the other way round though.

I can't help you with the funding side of things. However, we trialled both Sufrace Pro 4 (i5 4GB) and Surface 3 as a replacement for a teacher laptop, setting up wireless streaming to the projectors etc. Our teachers said the Surface 3 was not quick enough, it lagged when multitasking, which given its spec isn't entirely unexpected but just some info for you. The Surface 4 Pro, is by far a superior product, it was quick enough for them, they preferred the kickstand on it and preferred the keyboard which is a must if you are replacing laptops.

If the menu/ navigation bar has gone then usually a forced refresh fixes it, crtl+f5 or clearing the browser cache. It isn't that uncommon to be honest.

The EoFTTC looks interesting but sadly, the costs at 100Mb seems to be close toa Leased Line anyways for us.

Off topic, but get powerline adpaters and a steam link for steam game streaming much much better!

I tried one and it didn't work, but it doesnt mean it won't work ever. But you can get android sticks that literally do airplay or miracast, and you click a button to swap between them. That was a cheap £27 stick. So more advance ones have remotes etc. Might work out cheaper in the long run and means no need to have a machine running as such, AirServer means the stick needs to auto login etc.

Then your 3 exhaust fans on the top should solve your problem, at the moment you simple have to much air going in and not enough coming out so the fans probably aren't getting that much air flow.

Your CPU cooler should be blowing out the case not in, or your blowing hot air into a hot case. Also remember your PSU probably have an out fan as well! So you might have hot air going out your PSu then being pushed back in with your CPU fan. Think of the general principles, cold air in through the front, then expel all the hot air out the back. So your front fans are fine, its your back that need addressing.

Mine cost me abotu £1k each last time I bought them (about 12 months ago) and I run 4 physical servers/ SANs on each (+important switches for iSCSI), I get about 20-30 minutes. Its been tested by electricians (not deliberately, they just turned the circuit off without telling me!)

In all fairness to Advanced, the notes are very comprehensive, which to me was a massive benefit when I did my first ever ePortal and CMIS update about 3 years ago.

Assuming you use Kerberos or NTLM on Smoothwall already, simple turn Proxy Authenication on but on a different port. Set the proxy setting on the tablets to point to the port and you will be asked to login each time. The downside is that people will tick remember my credentials and then end up authenicating as each other!

It all depends on your proxy setup etc. The usual way is to create a 2nd VLAN, have the Guest Wifi on that VLAN. Then make everything on that VLAN get the same level of filtering through whichever method you choose. Most filters will do it with Ident by IP or everything on theat VLAN treated as something. That's the very basics of what you need to do, obviously it is a little more complicated in reality.

We are currently trialling a piece fo software called Layer2 Cloud Connector. It isn't the most user friendly piece fo software from the adminsitration side but it works fine, you have to prep your sharepoint properly to use it ofcourse. Each user has to have a .xml file to create the connection (basically chuck a few variables in there), which means 65 staff need 65 .xml files, or 1000 students would need 1000 individual connect files. The files are easy to create and I am hopefully today sort out a small VB or bash program to create the .xml files straight from a CSV file.

We are currently trialling 3rd party software that syncs from our file server to Personal One Drive accounts, as well as syncing "shared" drives with sharepoint libraries to give access to both. It is all from server to OneDrive no interaction from the teaching staff, so far it seems to work well after the initial upload which is a nightmare as you cna imagine. The idea then is to have home drives mapped as normal in school but then externally all files can be accessed through OneDrive directly, I am currenlty debating whether to get the likes of Iamcloud as well, so that externally people OneDrive are mapped as a network drive so it appears entirely seemless for them. It is currently the best of both worls but ofcourse is more expensive, but we don't have the concern of Internet conenction being overly utilised or if it goes does then staff still have access to their files which would be my biggest concern. The plan is longer term to probably move to cloud storage, however, I don't think it is time to yet and I want to see what the impact of the new Micorosoft Licensing Agreement brings, the Cloud Transition Agreement.

Similar to what @pete posted up there, there will be laods of errors though if people don't have a "personal" sharepoint yet, e.g they have never clicked on "OneDrive" when accessing their Offic365 accounts. Of course, I now have two scripts. One similar to the above that sorts permissions but also a second one that pre-creates the drives. So basically you can create everyone's onedrive and then add an account as an administrator. I'll upload them on Monday, I've been off today.

To be totally honest, I'm sure there is quite an easy way to do this but I can't figure it out. Basically, I have a csv of details, for example: Name, HomeDrive, EmailAddress Bill, Staff\Bill, [email protected] Ted, Staff\Ted, [email protected] I need to get said information into XML files, one for each line. Similar to mail merging. I need to get the information into an .xml file to create individual connection files, and would like to atomate it so that I don't have to do 60 members of staff seperately! So that the XML might be similar to: This is $name The home drive is $HomeDrive The email address is $EmailAddress Hope that makes sense.
