with connection error 0 I have found this is a problem with the connect.ini looking at the wrong location. Delete the local connect.ini and then try to acess sims. This will ask to confirm location and then attach direct to the named server.

am I missing something here, hightowere on the sims.ini you copied I can't see a sims .netdirectory setting which I am sure you should have.

another thing to consider is that you will need access to 2 different areas. The exe files for Exams etc are normally located on the sims drive with the .net client files located in the C:\programs files\sism\sims .net For a user to run one of the non .net modules they will need to have access to both area's. Ideally could you let us see the contents of the SIms.ini (normally found in C:\windows and the connect.ini on the network drive

We have the ask for .exe files turn off on the servers. Only my team are able to access the servers. The advantage of running overnight means that that any issue regarding server use are addressed. Regarding problems with Upgrades I used to have similar feelings but with Solus 2 we have seen an increased level of stability where the upgrades are concerned. I still am a bit worried about the way some releases have been pulled returned or even changed but in general we have been pleased with Solus 2 and we are now eagerly awaiting solus 3 which should make our lives even easier

don't forget thar exams is not yet a .net module. What happens for example when you try to run system manager on the terminal server

I do not beleive that this is a SIMS issue. I have 60 schools each with 1 server to deliver the network and SIMs and I have never had a problem with rebooting caused by SIMS. Equally is there a reason why you are doing SIMS upgrades during the day. With scripted use of Solus you can allow any sims upgrades to run overnight when there is nobody in the school

WIll sound starnge but have you tried to install the client directly to a machine and then looked at what happens. What version of examinations are you using and what version of SIMS .net

I run them at home with good results At first took the the net feed from my virgin modem to the router in the centre of the house. This worked fine as the speed of the isp link was 20mb and the speed between the plugs ran at about 40-45mb. then changed router to the the front room and used the plugs to feed one machine at the back of the house. All good but still max speed of 40-45mb These will not go past the fuse box as we tried to see if this could work for my neighbour next door

This is a collect issue as They are stating that the other code fails their validation. This follows early assurances that any contact data would not be subjected to validation. The patch mentioned was delivered for those schools or LA's who wanted to ensure that the STD code was listed against phone numbers.

Quick follow on from this. Where I mention other MIS supplier I do not mean all. I have found over the weekend on supportnet that several other supplier are also able to allow the "o" code onto the return.

Contact Telephone Type (Amended 16/01/2009) The DCSF have now responded to my email about "Other" as a Telephone Type (Telephone Location) and have informed me that they cannot accept Return Files with "O" as Telephone Type. However, they also tell me that it is a straightforward matter for those uploading to COLLECT to make the change at that point. I doubt if there are many schools that have made use of "Other" as a Telephone Location. This will almost certainly lead to an amount of extra work for school staff, which was not supposed to be the case. Equally I am told that other MIS suppliers were aware of this and made changes to avaoid this happening

When you get any sims error it would be ideal if you could place a screen dump of the error. Many of us will have seen errors but no know how to fix unless they see the actual error

active directory is normally backed up as the system state and should not need an agent

The agent tends to clean up the temp files and ensure that the database down time is kept to a minimum. It also means there are less sepoerate sections that can go wrong. What we do is to run a script which creates a .bak file in a specified location overwritting the previous one. This is named using our naming convention and included in the backup. Our script also ensures that specific named tapes are used on the correct day using ntbackup and then the report is named to the date and stored ina shared folder for the users to check

.net frameworks are not upgradable. There are distinct differences between each of the frameworks and it is possible to have 1,2,and 3 all on one machine with different packages using different framework levels.

This doesn't appear to be a capita issue but a microsoft issue. If you want a backup solution to actually communicate with the SQL database and take a backup as part of the process then yes you will need the agent. It is also possible to get SIMS to create a backup for you of the database using cmd line tools in dbattach. This will create a flat file that can be backed up. We use Ntbackup down here and have a series of scripts which backup the database into a specified folder each night as part of the backup.

generally looks good but for this census issue I would concentrate on just downloading the service pack, difference of 40ish mb against 346mb Equally we have been assured again and again that only .net framework 2 will be required for SIMS .net.

there is a known issue regarding this that may affect the ability to create the census reports.
