This should help: SIMS Exams Embargo Dates 2008 Patch The Exam Embargo dates are still pointing at last years date and hence any Sims .net users who has access to the Student details screen will be able to view the Exam Results on the Results Embargo days this August. Focus | Student | Student details | Select pupil | Links panel | Exams This issue will be addressed in the August 08 release. If you are unable to upgrade to this release prior to the Exams results day, patch 12107 is available to hide the Exam results in the student details | Links panel for these two days. Please raise a call with you local support unit quoting KB81663

I did read somewhere that there are issues with the dates on the emargo and you may need a patch

Are you on August release of SIMS .net ??

This was done due to conflicting information given by Capita, typically the helpdesk were stating one thing and the specialists stated another. We are still not releasing the upgrade until schools are able to confirm that the basedata has been applied, as one of our site may have to roll back to May, apply the basedata and then upgrade again

If your schools are putting in OCR Nationals they need to set up the Basedata in Sept 07 and enter the results before they run the Aug upgrade as the upgrade changes the levels structure for Sept 08 and prevents the results from being entered. Quote from Capita: To maintain continuity, the August upgrade corrects the codes and aspect definitions for Level 2 First Award and First Certificate from the stopgap values used by OCR last year (AWE and FCE) to the permanent values introduced in the Formats Version 11 (September 2008), FA2 and FC2. This means that following upgrade, import of the revised September 2007 basedata, just issued by OCR to enable the recording of results, would fail for the affected items with a 'Level does not exist' error. Entry of results will not be affected by the upgrade.

Phil Thanks for the response however could I get a further bit of clarification? When you say: The outputs that work with OpenOffice are: report generator assessment manager profiles - excluding graphs Are you saying that when we run a report Ie Birthday list we should expect that the report will run and then automatically start open office to display the output? or are you saying that data saved from a report can be opened using Open Office? We accept that OPen source by it's very nature is difficult to offer any sort of support and always appreciate that any attempt to get this to work would normally be best efforts only. We have our test rig configured now with open office as this could be a cost effective way to allow access to SIMS using terminal server in our schools where teachers would mainly be using attendance and assesment manager for data entry and reporting etc occasionally.

Advice Fix 1 The machine may be pointing to a incorrect networked Connect.ini file and therefore cannot see any SQL Server or Database. Delete the Connect.ini from e.g. C:\Program files\SIMS\SIMS .net and then run SIMS .net and select the correct Connect.ini from e.g. S:\SIMS or alternatively create a local connect.ini and enter the correct SQL Server and Database name. Fix 2 Stop and Restart SQL Server - The SQL Server may not be running Fix 3 The error can also be an indication that the upgrade has been run, but has been unsuccessful. Please check the version of SIMSSQLApplicationsetup.exe in the setups folder is 1.558.12 (for August 2007 release) or 1.0560 (for September 2007 release) then run this to upgrade to version of DBupgrade which should be 2.11.10.24603 Then run Dbupgrade.exe manually from e.g. D:\Program files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\Binn The list of upgrade files will be shown or there may be a message about a User already logged in. If Users are detected, a Force All will need to be run to exit the Users out of SIMS to allow the upgrade to commence (requiring the SA logon credentials). This Force All option will appear automatically if Users are detected as being logged in. Fix 4 If fix 3 does not resolve the issue please run SIMSApplicationsetup.exe from the setups folder Fix 5 If the error still occurs and you installed SQL 2005, but not via one of our installers then please follow KB71936 Fix 6 This error can also be caused by a corrupt user in the users table. If all other users can login to the system OK please re-create the user that is getting reason 0 Fix 7 Please reboot the server and try logging in to SIMS.net Fix 8 THIS IS ONLY RELEVANT IF PASSWORDS HAVE BEEN RESET This problem may be due to the Domain Control settings policy with the School. The reason for this is because the school's policy does not allow the password to be reset more than a certain number of times within a specific time-frame. This issue will be resolved in the June 08 release. (only if Reason 0 occurs after resetting passwords) This problem will need to be resolved on the domain server prior to running the June 08 release Fix 9 Check there is sufficient space on the partition where SQL is installed. Also check the system partition has sufficient space as temporary files can be created during the backup. Check the size of the SQL Log file eg SIMS.LDF. If excessively large use SHRINKDBLOG.BAT to shrink the log file.

phil can you clarify this issue a bit please. are you saying that there is nothing that should stop a report such as the birthday list for example from being able to be run in SIMS .net with the output being openoffice.org 2.4 and the writer package within? When I raised this issue with the SIMS helpdesk I was simply told that Reports do not work with Open Office and that we would need to have Office 2003 or above.

I have been looking at Open Office today. I installed onto my test system and install office 2003. All reports work fine. I then uninstalled office 2003 and installed Open Office 2.4. When I run reports I get a .com error . I have checked that the file extensions are set and I can open .rtf documents and .doc documents from a folder using open office. I suppose I could look further but I am suprised that even such an easy test has failed at the first hurdle.

When SIMS moves to SQL 2005 and system manager 6.90 in introduced then the passwords for SIMS .net will be stored in the master.mdf and not the SIMS.mdf. This will mean that by detaching and reattaching the database all the SIMS passwords will be changed, and reset to the 11 character password. This will change the sysman password but this can then be reset as required and the new list printed out.

Did you have backup exec 11d on the server using SQL 2005? I have seen this cause a problem

yeah cause you are working within the database. This routine uses the SIMS built in sql users. It is also worth considering any other product you have attached to the database. We have schools that use PARS for registration and this can stop any SIMS database being able to go into single user mode.
