First line support role eh? "Hello...I've got a problem with my PC" "Right I'll just put you through to second line..." Job done

It's 'OK' but dragging a bit for me at the moment, since they've ditched the SIARPC they have an extra 10 minutes or so an episode to fill. Maybe because they need enough content to fill 12 episodes rather than 6 too doesn't help matters. The editing is basically just Top Gear though!

Could be the case that they're not getting candidates because of the safeguarding business meaning you have to complete (often very poorly designed!) application forms and supporting statements rather than firing off a cover letter and CV. Once you have a 'template' it becomes quite easy but still slightly annoying. I've noticed quite a few primary schools seem to have suddenly realised how much IT has expanded over the years and are now hiring for IT managers / dedicated technicians rather than just nicking them part time from another school too recently!

A far bigger issue potentially for people deciding to roll this out (Especially in education!) is that HTML5 is now king and any sites which don't have a HTML5 option will fall back to Flash and you have to 'enable' the plugin for such sites to run the content. Could cause a few headaches... 32GB isn't really anything to write home about these days, I have 32GB in my PC and it cost <£100!

Capital Budget Meeting : "We'll put Room X on hold until next year" Capital Budget Meeting Next Year : "We'll have to make Room X last another year" Capital Budget Meeting Several Years Later : "People are complaining about Room X, maybe we should upgrade it" -
Have you moved the BIOS reset jumper across then back to the original position without turning the PC on as that is usually what clears it, sounds like you've switched it on after moving it which seems to have entered some form of BIOS maintenance mode rather than resetting everything It might help if you looked on the motherboard and posted the model number

They only need to flog this deal to 2.7 million new customers to recoup their costs for The Grand Tour

Bit of fun - who has the oldest (working) Windows domain?

I bet there are several out there in the real world named 'Contoso' -
Bit of fun - who has the oldest (working) Windows domain?

"The trust relationship between this workstation and the primary domain failed" used to drive me up the wall though with workstations! Have they fixed that for Windows 10 / Server 2016?! -
Bit of fun - who has the oldest (working) Windows domain?
googlemad replied to 3s-gtech's topic in General Chat
At my old place our 'official' domain was launched in 2008-2009 but it had actually been in place since about Windows 2000 just to support a couple of things that wouldn't run through Novell at the time Have to say I do miss some of the Novell ConsoleOne functionality! -
Has Microsoft / Google managed to implement a 'retract' feature yet for internal email (Well technically it isn't 'internal' these days but on the same domain account sort of thing) like Novell Groupwise used to offer? That was one of the biggest features absent when we moved to Google Mail! (The Google 'Undo' feature is pretty useless) Probably wouldn't work in this case mind!

2 monitors or 1 widescreen for school office + advice
googlemad replied to TwistedHelixis's topic in Hardware
The only trouble with the dual monitors is once one member of staff has them, they all blooming want them! -
Can anyone recommend a decent wireless card that I could fit in my Dell 15R SE (7520) laptop? I would prefer an internal card to a dongle and no longer under warranty so happy to open it up and swap it out At the moment I have the factory Intel Centrino Wireless-N 2230 which seems to have odd problems now and again under Windows 10. Ideally a replacement would be dual band too as my router has both 2.4ghz and 5ghz

The trouble with this idea if you ask me is like every decision in education in a few years time they'll just be wanting it back again!

I saw earlier the Elite bundle is going for £199 or something Not bad considering the controller alone in that particular bundle is £70 - £100 resale value!

How many?! I bet the novelty of unboxing those soon wears off!

Windows Server grinds to halt, despite using no resources
googlemad replied to mikes's topic in Windows Server 2012
Try disabling the Windows Update service on it temporarily and see if that helps, although if that was the cause it would likely be showing 100% CPU for one of the services in Task Manager -
I have a 6 Plus and can't see myself needing to upgrade from it for a good few years yet (famous last words!) Not a heavy apps user really, it has a nice screen, decent battery and still runs at a decent speed. The 5 was good when it worked but full of weird issues, think I went through 5 or so replacements and then the battery sucked to the point it could be fully charged in the morning and dead by lunchtime!

The audience were NOT impressed when the pricing came up!
-
You can't plug your iPhone 7 into your new MacBook out of the box... ...erm Oh, and this touch bar, Microsoft have one 28 inches bigger
-
It looks good but clearly targeted at the professional market rather than consumer level so the pricing isn't really an issue there The only issue I have really is the fact it is an all in one, so when the hardware becomes redundant in a few years chuck it out and buy another...would have been nice if there was the option to hook up the display to an external PC for future proofing Anyway...who will be the first to release an air hockey game for Windows 10

This was an excellent series. I binge watched it all yesterday

Support companies for your school's IT - Quick poll
googlemad replied to nikaso's topic in General Chat
I've worked in a place that went through both having managed support and then not (There was a massive argument at one point and that was that!) To be honest I didn't really miss it that much once they had gone, it can be a good thing for your team (assuming you have one!) to learn about how to resolve things when they bugger up, as then they can put it on their CV too - we had apprentices / work experience working on switches and SANs projects for example The money saved you can then put towards maybe a spare couple of switches / server parts in case of failure, and when you're after buying new stuff you can consider a wider range of options, you can always buy in a couple of consultancy days with the suppliers too for them to do the initial install and guide you through the basics
