  1. If things are that critical the actual departments should have another method of working whilst the system is being repaired. Here in the NHS for example our core switch tripped several times due to another faulty switch recently which totally knocked out VMWare as the initial failure it tried to kick in HA, but then with the networking tripping several times in quick succession it confused itself as to where the VMs actually were and took us nearly a whole day to resolve as we had to contact VMWare etc. What was the solution for the affected departments? Good old pen and paper In many places I've seen it being a case of 'It's fine we spent £948475472340 on disaster recovery and failover' but never actually test it works so when it comes down to it their fancy solution is about as much use as a chocolate fireguard!
  2. I have a .reg file to remove several keys in the registry if they exist (Fine if they don't exist it runs anyway but doesn't do anything obviously) If run manually under a user account, works fine. Doesn't even need admin rights but apparently we can't just chuck this out to users as they would find it 'too complex' (you know, that complicated process of double clicking a file and clicking 'Yes'!) Now I'm trying to work out the best way of deploying this across the domain to all clients, which is proving tricky due to it being in HKCU so it sort of needs to run around the time the user is logged in and at the desktop...any ideas?
  3. Yeah we have that turned off already Anyway sorted after a week of pulling my hair out! https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/ie/forum/ie11-windows_7/applet-not-loading-in-internet-explorer-11/986670da-0778-45c8-90f8-008d8133dd62 ONE Registry Key referencing the old Java. Delete that key, restart IE11 and BINGO!
  4. So the issue is on some machines IE11 hasn't registered the JRE 1.8 add-on properly so it is still looking for the 1.6 one which doesn't exist any more obviously! Any ideas on how to resolve, ideally via GPO? It looks like jp2iexp.dll in either case, just that before it was in C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre6\bin now it is in C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre1.8.0_74!
  5. Don't bother! Instead donate them to your IT classes so they have some kit to disassemble and play around with, or just recycle them with your computer supplier
  6. It is the LA-9104P but I managed to bugger it up by breaking the CMOS battery slot trying to get it back in! (Knew it was going too well...). Ah well the motherboard was born in September 2012 so it has had a reasonable 5 years life, they've agreed to buy a new laptop now anyway so I'll just keep this one around and maybe come across a cheap motherboard one day Funnily enough one has just come up on fleabay!
  7. The neighbours have given me their Dell Inspiron 3521 laptop to look at as it isn't powering on or charging. I've found the issue, as soon as you plug in the power adapter the green light on it goes out - Luckily I also happen to own a Dell laptop so tried my power adapter as the first obvious step - same result (and their power adapter charges my laptop perfectly fine) Tried taking the battery out etc, exact same so now I've dismantled the entire thing and the power jack seems to be OK as if I plug the lead in to that when disconnected from the motherboard the green light stays on, so looks like the motherboard is causing the issue somehow even after trying to power it with nothing at all connected (even tried removing the motherboard battery just in case) Any tips - can it be repaired economically? Can't seem to find anywhere doing a motherboard replacement at a decent price for this model
  8. I'm having a real nightmare with Java 8 Update 74 and IE11! Basically we have several eLearning packages that work fine as long as you accept the several Java security warnings that pop up when launching them. The issue is that on quite a lot of machines, seemingly at random (We deployed this Java to over 3000 PCs recently) those security warnings aren't popping up at all - therefore the eLearning doesn't work! 'Reset security warnings' in the Java control panel has no effect, I thought I had found another solution by unticking 'Enable Java content in the browser' then ticking it again but this only seems to be a temporary solution, as soon as the user has tried again this morning the security prompts have vanished into thin air again! At a bit of a loss now as it seems quite random with some machines bringing them up consistently and some just deciding to bring them up when they feel like it! Any ideas?!
  9. I thought you could buy 'compatible' SFP anyway, remember someone saying to me once that they bought them all the time because they were just as good at a fraction of the ripoff price Cisco wanted to charge and would just have a few spares around in case of failures - maybe I'm getting confused with something else. (Obviously if the fakes were actually labelled as Cisco that would be wrong)
  10. My first year not working in education and summer is...business as usual!
  11. Can cost getting on for 4 figures for a new PC/laptop when you take into account things like licensing (Microsoft Office in particular), fancy keyboard with the reader for smart card etc. I'm not involved in desktops too much but I know here we do try RAM upgrades etc but you can only do so much, and keeping on top of an estate of 3000 workstations sometimes it is actually easier to just swap a PC with a freshly imaged one from stock rather than faff about with temporary RAM upgrades and the like. As for hard drives I believe they just get physically crushed full stop when PCs are decommissioned. A funny story when I first started here my PC was rubbish after sticking Windows 10 on it, 5 minutes later I had a shiny new one. i3 with SSD, apparently the batch of them weren't suitable for general hospital use as they don't have a built in speaker!
  12. If I detach a data drive from a Server 2008 VM and attach to a 2016 VM, will it be compatible and more importantly retain the file shares / permissions etc?
  13. Well one thing is for sure it'll be twice as good as the plastic fiver...
  14. As MatthewL said, we have very little control of nhs.net from an admin point of view! You could try the helpdesk on 0333 200 1133 / [email protected] but they're generally a bit rubbish in my personal opinion. The scary thing is our hospital are currently in the middle of debating whether to stick with having an internal Exchange system or migrating across to entirely nhs.net too. When I say debating, I predict a 99.9% of ditching the Exchange system as it is 2010 and the costs of getting it updated and renewing maintenance etc will be astronomical!
  15. We have a new web system coming in that requires SSL certificates which the supplier have sent CSR files for, one will be the test/training system (Server ABCTESTTRAIN) and then the live system (Server ABCLIVE). Do 2 seperate SSL certificates have to be purchased or can we get away with just the one UCC/SAN certificate and use subject alternative names?
  16. I bought an Apple Watch Series 1 from PC World for £199.99, always wanted to try one but never fancied shelling out full whack but at that price I thought worth a punt Amazon returns are very good, I had a faulty external hard drive and they literally refunded my money the second after I took it to the post office! Must have thought 'yep on the way now based on the tracking number might as well refund'
  17. osTicket is good but it requires quite a lot of set up to get it how you want it, but our Estates department hated the idea of jobs coming through tickets as they just preferred the good old 'just get the stuff fixed' workflow!
  18. This made me laugh the other day, never thought I would have to wait for a disk check to complete before seeing when my bus was due!
  19. This is a totally random question but does anybody know which size of Really Useful Box (the plastic stackable ones) would be suitable for storing standard sized backup tapes in their protective cases? We would need to store about 10 tapes in each box. At the moment we're using the lids from paper boxes which are falling to pieces!
  20. I was being thick...had a DNS A record for the old server pointing to the new server IP so got rid of that and created a CNAME record instead, then noticed in Active Directory the old server still had a computer object present so removed that and everything works fine, the old server UNC path now brings up the contents of the new server
  21. We had a couple of really old SQL servers, SQL1 and SQL2 so have built a brand new SQLSERVER 2016 server and then migrate the databases and file shares across. Having done SQL1, we then pointed SQL1 in DNS to the SQLSERVER IP address and all seemed fine SQL wise, but I've just noticed when starting to try and do the same with SQL2 when you try and access the file shares a error message pops up "The specified network name is no longer available" Is there any way to resolve this? The reason we have to cheat is because we have 100 or so SQL applications hard coded to the old server names and the developer left years ago!
  22. I am also interested in the answer to this as we have a mix of 2008 / 2008 R2 / 2012 / 2016 virtual servers that the boss has now requested get a reboot every 2 weeks! Don't really want to have to go around setting up a scheduled task on every single one manually, and also would be nice to have a solution where it sends a nice email or something off to my boss once successfully rebooted
  23. Have just purchased a GoDaddy SSL certificate for our Exchange servers with the primary domain of owa.ourdomain.com which got all validated. However tried adding autodiscover.internalourdomain.com, cas1.internalourdomain.com and cas2.internalourdomain.com as alternative names to stop a security warning popping up in Outlook as those were on the previous self signed certificate but now GoDaddy wants to validate those by accessing a HTML page placed on the web servers, trouble is since they're internal they won't be able to! Any ideas? We do have some external services on internalourdomain.com but not Exchange!
  24. Really at a loose end here! Need to create a new certificate for some Exchange 2010 servers, which I thought I would be able to do easily enough as we have a internal Windows CA server by the looks of things The trouble is, I generate it and import into Exchange which then comes back with 'The certificate status could not be determined because the revocation check failed' which suggests it can't communicate with the CA server. If I do a certutil -config - --ping the results brings up 2 entries, the first CA : "ABC-CA" Computer : "ABC.ourdomain.com" the second CA : "XYZ-CA" Computer : "XYZ.ourdomain.com" the problem there being the second entry computer no longer exists! So not sure where that is hiding... If I browse to the certificate URL listed on the Exchange box in a web browser I get a prompt to download the certificate so it seems to be able to get there somehow just that Exchange isn't having any of it! Everything I've seen suggests it is due to proxy servers but we don't have any of those in use here so I'm at a bit of a brick wall!
  25. Great, a week or so after the cyber attacks which has made everyone super paranoid our Exchange server security certificate has expired bringing up a security warning every time someone attempts to access Outlook!!!
