I think realistically? I can see this being a fairly long term thing, yeah. If we let up on the distancing stuff early, it'll just cause an increase again. I believe Wuhan have started easing their restrictions, so we'll see in a a few weeks!

I don't know if that has been posted before, but Folding@Home are running simluations to help with the Covid-19 outbreak. Their servers are taking a bit of a beating, so downloads can take a little while, but if anyone wants to install it on their PC and give some CPU cycles to them, feel free. The DfE's advice seems to fly totally in the face of the views of scientists around the world. The advice that scientists have given is that it can be spread without symptoms - which is pretty much how it seems to have got over here in the first place, people coming back from overseas without any symptoms spreading it to people they know. However, it does fit with the "we must keep schools open as it'll be too difficult for the country if they all close" view the government has given so far.

The Chinese belt and road initiative has sped a lot of development up in some areas of Africa, absolutely. 472m people of Sub Saharan Africa's 1bn live in urban areas now and predicted to grow by 65m per year (which is insane). So, yeah density there is quite extreme in places. The problem will be during their winter, they're gonna get hit hard and even with the urbanisation, they don't have the health systems to cope yet (I mean, we don't either). True... It'll be the more southern countries that will hurt.

The density one doesn't particularly hold up too well, as populations in Africa are gathering in very tight areas - eg. Lagos, at nearly 7000 residents per sq km. London is about 4500 for comparison. I think the heat may be more likely - temp in Africa is considerably higher than here 34 degrees C in Lagos right now. The big question will be when it switches - we'll have the warmer weather, they'll be in winter.

Not going to be political, but remember - scientists and advisers give options. They don't make the decision about which option the government choose. So, whilst scientists will then provide support for that option, it isn't "their approach" as such - it is the government's approach. You can be 100% sure that the scientists advising the government gave them multiple ways of dealing with this, the government then chose the route they are taking based on their own perceived priorities - rightly or wrongly.

For me, its because we are syncing 6 schools to it, from 6 SIMS databases. Doing it ourselves is easier - and we can automate it simply.

You won't need to open 3389 at all - if you're using the Web Gateway, you need port 443 open.

Not got to that stage yet! Still sorting through all the group names to determine which ones I actually need to sync (I don't want to create 50 intervention groups, and "talk time" groups, whatever they are).

I am writing a Powershell script to do this based on the groups we have in AD - basically, we have a group for every class. My script will take that group - turn its incomprehensible gibberish auto generated name and turn it into a sensible name, check G Suite if the classroom already exists, create it if it doesn't, then check and update membership based on group membership. The only thing we've had to do manually was add the teachers as the group managers in AD "Managed By", and we'll set them as the classroom teachers. Once I've finished something, I'll stick it on Github.

Our largest SIMS install (school with 560 children, 12GB SIMS.mdf file), runs on a 16vCPU, 16GB RAM VM running on enterprise SSDs in a RAID 6 array. I would still say it isn't much better than those times. The main difference we found, giving it better resources, was the big intensive tasks - like importing lots of CTF files.

I'd say for that small an amount, RAID 5 is unnecessary - RAID 1 would be plenty (and slightly more reliable due to URE rates, using a 10^14 URE drive, rebuilding a 3 x 2TB RAID array would give you a 73% chance of an array rebuilding without failure). Enterprise tier drives generally have a higher URE rate, so 10^15, and the chance of a rebuild shoots up (in my example above, up to 97% chance). So, I would say if you can't afford the £1500 to get 2 enterprise 4TB SSDs and slap em in RAID 1, I'd suggest either: 1. Get 2 x 4TB WD RED drives and put them in RAID 1 2. Get 3 x 2TB enterprise class drives and put them in RAID 5

What sort of data volume are you looking at?

SSD all through these days. All SATA SSD's in our QNAP arrays (Samsung PM863 2TB drives), then boot drives are SAS SSDs on the VM hosts (whatever Dell provides when you choose SSDs).

That case highlights to me how this technology is being rushed out.

it does matter, as it is applicable across the entire host, not the VM alone. So, if you have 20 VMs, all oversubscribed to vCPUs, they'll all be fighting for them - leading to those delays. Traditional RDSH desktop here, and no, no vGPUs. Yeah, that seems reasonable!
