I've seen this with some PDF files before, but not limited to Google Chrome specifically. We had some PDF files from our LEA that would hard reset our old Samsung laser printers. Usually it is a corrupt PDF. It might look ok on screen, but behind the scenes it is broken.

120" screens!? We don't even have that in some of our school halls, let alone in classrooms. Most of our rooms had the old smaller sized SMART boards. The largest we ever had in a classroom was 77". We've been putting in 65" touchscreens as standard now, and we've had absolutely no complaints. The image is clearer on a touchscreen than via a projector, so whilst you lose a bit of size, you gain fidelity.

It is education focused filtering, rather than security focused filtering I think is what you mean. We only use it on Chromebooks, and I don't think we'd use it on a Windows network, a more robust security solution is needed really for that.

OK, so let's break it down - are you using the actual door opening readers as the way of checking they're in, or do you have a separate reader they swipe which uses the Timesheet tool to register them? You can have as many readers as you like for the latter, as they are dedicated to the task. For the prior, I think there's a physical limitation of the number of readers you can have per controller.

The only way you're going to improve throughput is with moor doors/readers.

iPads being too old to update? That means they're, what, at least 6 years old? Your business manager is being unreasonable to be honest. Chromebooks have a fixed lifespan of support too - up to 8 years depending on the model/release date. Even Windows devices have a limit - an 8 year old Windows laptop is nearly always going to be fairly unusable as it will be far too slow. Rather than switching ecosystem, I would ask your BM how long they want the devices to last for. Sounds like this is an issue of not wanting to invest in new kit regularly more than anything.

It all depends on whether you're intending to apply different settings to different classes? For us, we haven't seen any reason to use different rules for different age groups yet, so each school in our Trust is in their own OU, but that's it. No years. However, if we do decide we need to apply settings granularly, we will do the last option - put children in an OU based on their intake year.

If the numbers in one of the articles are correct, Capita has basically been ripping off schools with its pricing. Effectively a 50% profit margin. Imagine what they could have achieved with their SaaS version if they'd reduced that to 40% and given the dev team an extra £10m a year in funding to do their job. I can't imagine PupilAsset, ScholarPack or even Arbor have spent that much money on developing their MIS's. £5m a year gets you a team of 100 developers earning 50k each...

At the moment? SIMS does not have a commercially available SaaS MIS product. There is a pre-release version that is, as I said, multiple years behind schedule, for the primary market. The secondary version isn't even that far along. It isn't "live" in any sense compared to their competitors.

SIMS 8 - the SaaS edition, is massively behind schedule and keeps slipping further behind. By their original plan, it should have been out for schools a couple of years ago. My guess? There's some level of fundamental flaw in the system that is holding it back.

They also sell to universities and further education colleges. So there's more to the business than just SIMS.

It'd be a govt owned business rather than govt run, with a specific set of rules for how it is run. I fear direct control would just end up killing it as political interference would occur too often based on the short term goals of whatever minister was in charge at the time. And yeah been doing the games stuff for a few years, including running the gaming servers Edugeek offers. [emoji4]

I'd be a fan of the DfE buying it, and spinning it into a govt owned non-profit business, with a board made up of elected members from the various education markets - schools, MATs, LEAs, universities etc... All profit gets put back into the business and it is there to serve its customers instead of make money. Would never happen though. Far too socialist.

If you ever wish to migrate VMs from one server to another, you need to license for the maximum number of instances of Windows you might end up running on each host. So, if you want to run those 2 hosts in a failover cluster, so if one fails the other can take over (or so you can take one down for maintenance), you need to license the full 8 VMs worth for each - the licenses from one server can't be transferred to the other server. So, you would need to double the number of licenses.

Thing is, with so many children being at home, using a middle man makes things a lot more difficult - it becomes a game of Chinese whispers and things take considerably longer to fix. At least that is our experience.

I'm not so sure a price of £700 would be that bad for them. People pay £1000 for a phone these days. I wonder if they'll follow in Microsoft's footsteps and offer a monthly purchase plan for it?
