Not work related, but I would like to create an assortment of tools to healthcheck a PC eg spyware, antivirus, disk defgrament and file cleaner (open source of course). I would like to automate the process via script, but would like some pointers of how to do it, what switches I would need to run a program install, automate the tasks, uninstall the program and move to the next tool etc. Just getting lots of requests to sort out friends and relatives PCs and looking to simplify the process. Is this possible? Any advice would be great. This would be a great point for me to start understanding the basics lol Thanks!

Removal of CC3/Win server 2003/Win XP for CC4/Win Server 2008R2/Win 7. Complete re image of all laptops and workstations and a clear out of old kit. Must find two weeks hols inbetween as well lol.

Morning peeps, I am completely uncertified in IT (I can hear the gasps lol) - however my experience, dedication and other skills attained in management and project management, I am in a lucky position of running an IT team. Around 10 years ago I paid £800 to national distance learning in Middlesborough to do a hardware course. It was module based and every time I submitted a module my work was awarded a distinction. Anyhow half way through, the company went bust (no refund). Just over 4 years ago, I took redundancy from Royal Mail in which I paid £6,000 to Advent IT which covered (A+, MCDST,MCSA and MCSE), however shortly before sitting the second half of my A+, the company went into administration (no refund). What I want to do is do quite a few of free on line tests, to gauge as to what I have picked up (plus my weaknesses), over my 5 years in the IT sector, and use library books and further on line free tests to judge when to book an exam. It's just I am no longer in a position to outlay big amounts of cash to learn, plus in this climate, what training companies can be trusted with your money? Any ideas gang?

Just to say we have just introduced the spreadsheet at the school and last week we recieved our first financial audit as an academy. We are around £17,000 PA for 41 printers and mfps which includes rental,toners and servicing at a rate of avg 500,000 prints per annum. We have 5 other large copiers around which do not come under the IT budgets.

We had a look at Ranger and the thought of it being bought over by RM put us off. Not that I think that RM is a bad company, but now they own Ranger AND CCx why is there scope to keep them both going?

Morning all, Need advice on obtaining a SSL cert for our school domain which we are getting a portal set up to allow teacher and pupils to upload and download files from their personal areas via a browser. I have been told that schools can get a free cert from certain companies - what's the best way to procede?

PS it would be worthwhile buying workstations to be shipped with the cheapest OS available and use EES licencing for the upgrade - thats the cheapest way to do it.

Viglen Ominino 4s - Came in cheaper than any other workstation we looked at - never looked back since.

I've put 241 Omnino 4s in our school just after last summer - No major issues apart from having to use a first gen core i5 board due to build issues on CC3. The only major issue we had, was that the Intel Management Engine mysteriously dissappeared of around 20 of the mainboards, making the fans run and max out. We also found that if they weren't reported to us that the boards would run for a while and die. If we caught them early enough with a BIOS flash, they returned to normal. Viglen replaced the boards when requested - no questions asked. I cannot recommend the machines or the support highly enough.

Flat structures may be wrong, but here we have Maths lessons in the science block, English lessons in IT rooms. We have tried to box clever and make everything granular, but it just never suits our uber-dynamic timetabling here lol.

Seriously consider a live@edu/outlook 2010 setup. We have never looked back since.

Afternoon all Having issues trying to allow AD authentication to a QNAP network NAS drive. We want to try out to see if it would save thousands on replacing an antiquated server we are using only to host files. I have the drive connected to AD and I am trying to allow the AD group "teaching staff" and "non teaching staff" read only access to files in the folder called Qmultimedia. On the web console it looks okay, but when you try and access the folder it won't accept any authentication not even the admin credentials of the box! Does anyone have any experience in configuring these devices? Cheers!
