We use an Avocent Emerge box for one of our remote machines. Admittedly it's quite a good one that does KB/Mouse, Dual DVI and sound as well. We use HD dual screen resolutions (3960 x 1080) with no problems at all. HBJB

Maybe our staff only used the basic reports then because I've never been told that they cannot get the same information out. HBJB

Quite! Cover 7 is very powerful and has far greater functionality than T4. As for the reports in T4; all the information is in SIMS, it's just a question of finding it again. I have to admit that the reports were easier to generate in T4 but if you're keeping it purely because staff 'like the look of' or 'don't know where the report is now' then it's time to beat them with the Luddite stick and drag them kicking and screaming into the real world where things get superseded. Tell them now that it'll be going soon and that they should use the current software. Remove their access if neccessary. HBJB

I managed to ween all our staff off of T4 a long while back. I told them it was going and that they should use bespoke reports or the ones in SIMS.net to get the info. Never had a complaint. Our timetabler still uses it for the bits that are easier in T4 than T6 but she's prepared for its demise. She's also the cover supervisor but uses Cover 7 because of the personnel link (i think). We use Fog for this and it works brilliantly. Loads of choice about how in-depth your wipe has be be as well. We just trashed 90 odd drives using fog - set it and wait for it to happen. Job done. HBJB

As usual Dan came up trumps for us yesterday when we needed to replace one of the power supplies in our SAN. One phone call and he'd sourced the part, given us a great price and (at our request) arranged for 3 hour delivery on it. I can't recommend WStore enough for all of the things they do for us. Price matching (and beating), fast delivery, great service and Dan at the end of the phone when we need him. Cheers again Dan - disaster averted. HBJB

There are three or four case sizes for the 780s aren't there? Which type are you after? We have a couple of spare 780s kicking around but wouldn't want to loose a case from one of them. So far none of our little darlings has managed to destroy one to the point of it being stripped. HBJB

Looks like a bigger task than we thought. I've spoken briefly to Capita but they're doing a good job of not calling me back at the moment (is Phil's boot required?). The schools will be linked with 10Gb fibre soon with a trust between domains initially. I guess we'll be scheduling a meeting with the head to see what's actually required (as usual we've been given the barest minimum in the way of details). Cheers HBJB

Hi, We may have to merge administratively with the school next door in the near future. MIS data will have to be merged as well. School A is on SIMS and school B is on CMIS. The scenarios as far as I can see are: School A keeps SIMS and school B moves over to SIMS, school B keeps CMIS and school A moves to CMIS or both schools keep their existing MIS and just carry on as they are (there won't be too much cross over in pupils between sites - it'll pretty much carry on as it is for the time being with pupils still going into the same building they've always used). Assuming the first scenario, would the data from CMIS (school B) be able to be merged into a new SIMS database along with the existing SIMS data (from school A)? I assume historical data for analysis will be required so a new blank database from scratch will not be the preferred solution here (I know we could give access to the old database(s) but the ideal solution is to have all previous data available). A name change may take place and the possibility that a new DfES number will be assigned means that a patch from Capita may be required. Does anyone have any experience of this scenario and know the pitfalls we may encounter (apart from the obvious timetabling and admin ones)? Cheers HBJB

@witch F or B flat? I suspect F and its nearest equivalent in a brass band would be the E flat horn not the euphonium (too deep). I can play just about anything brass - started on cornet went to horn eventually but have picked up the cornet again recently and went to a few rehearsals with my old lot (Poole Borough Band) but don't seem to get the time any more to give it my full attention. Not tried a French horn but would give it a go. Have dabbled with the cello and enjoyed it and played trumpet in a local orchestra for a short while. Fair point! I make a point of asking the exams officer when the exams are and making him email me (I do this often as they schedule new ones without telling us). HBJB
