Update: Using the web GUI, I've managed to get the menu item back in and working (I think). I copied the default kernel label and pointed it to the alternative kernel. It's in the wrong place but that's the least of my worries and as soon as I find out how to edit the file manually I'll put it in the right place. Now for the next problem. I cannot assign a password to any my new (custom) menu item because it does not show in the relevant list. Any ideas? HBJB

Help please!! I've no experience of Linux at all and have been left with a problem that I have to solve on my own (no help for several weeks and I'm the only one here). Our Fog server was setup by someone else who no longer works here and it appears to have lost one of the custom menu items he put in place. Our Fog server used to have a custom PXE menu that gave the option to load a different kernel (PS Kernel-2.6.29.2.PS) so we could register and image certain Dell PCs. That menu item has just disappeared and I need to put it back in. The kernel is still in the tftpboot/fog/kernel folder (along with the BzImage one). So far I've managed to VNC into the machine and get to the /tftpboot/pxelinux.cfg/default file and the have found out that item is not listed anymore. I need to get it listed again and have it loading the correct kernel when selected. As mentioned I'm new to Linux and can't even get this file to be not read only. Any help at all would be welcome. We use it extensively here and I believe it's raised the levels quite a bit for a lot of students. I don't think you'll be able to tell much after just two weeks but out LT have deemed it worthy to pay for it for the past three or four years. Technically, it's not marvelous but it does now make adding users easier (don't attempt to add them manually since you have to setup all their groups and classes by hand and it's a right PITA). I upload a file from SIMS every week to sort out our movers and shakers and it works just fine. Hope this helps HBJB

Get proper carpet for the stairs It needs to be tucked in over the lip and secured with carpet rods (or gripper rods) and you won't get the flexability with carpet tiles. Either that or see where your caretaker would go to get some for school. HBJB

You can do this with Clonezilla. It takes a little learning if you've not used it before but you can save an ISO and burn it to CD/DVD. HBJB

I'm running two SIMS servers at the moment since I'm just about to roll out the new one system wide but my backups on the old server take over 25 mins to complete and on the new server they take 17 seconds. HBJB

Yeah, it's still really slooooow here too. ... and another thing ... for some reason they've decided to delete all of our users and re-create them and as a consequence most (about 75%) of our user names are now what they class as 'unusual' so they've stuck numbers at the end. This has confused our students and teachers no end because they were virtually all unique last year and now no-one can log in with their old user name. Why oh why can't they add a unique school identifier onto the user name (school number or similar) so that this doesn't happen - or let us upload a list of user names/passwords? Did they seriously not think that duplicate names would appear with the system that they use? I'm really fed up with them this term. HBJB

That'd be nice. I have just had a call from our Timetabler/Cover supervisor saying that she still wants to use novaT 4/6. I'm pretty sure these won't work under 64bit server. Am I correct? HBJB

Can I tap into this thread please? I have a new server for SIMS (still got the old 32bit one running at the moment). The new server will be 64bit 2003 R2 (until we migrate to 2008). I have the June main release but I think it's the 32bit version because it wont let me install it. What I want to do is to assume I've never used SIMS ever before and just install a fresh copy from scratch then move the databases over. Is this possible and what do I need to do it. Capita support is woefully resourced with info on installing on 64bit servers and how to do it cleanly. We use FMS as well btw. Cheers HBJB

Ooops I forgot to report back that I'd found a solution. Delete the tempsimsrpt folder from your user areas and all should be fine (well, it was for me). Cheers HBJB

I have to agree. We soon get to know who gives us their best price without all the haggling and going back and forth. I too dislike comparison bidding partially because of the hassle but mostly because we then know that we're not offered the best price first off. ... and yes I do appreciate that a profit has to be made and that margins are small but help us and yourselves out and get repeat orders by doing the best you can in the first place.
