  1. Try FoxIt PDF Reader If i had the chance to start fresh id give that a go as it loads instantly Paint.net and/or GIMP WINK - for doing flash "How to's" Cute PDF Printer I had to revert to Acrobat since Foxit did not work with Catalyst properly. I wouldn't entertain iTunes or Skype on our netwok though. HBJB
  2. Becaue they'll all have the same problem possibly? HBJB
  3. All but 203 here. SWGfL + at home in darkest Dorset. HBJB
  4. I stuck open office portable on a network share and let users run it from there. Seems to work well and no registration. HBJB
  5. I did wonder myself. HBJB
  6. We recently had both power supplies go on one of our HP Prolient ML G370s at the same time. HP swapped them both out and all's been well ever since. HBJB
  7. ... bad timing? Our NTL router died the day before the exam results were supposed to be downloaded. After ringing them in a blind panic 'cos it'll be my fault we don't have any results won't it, I managed to get a new one delivered to us but NTL insisted that their engineer fitted it. Needless to say he didn't turn up and after hours of waiting after my usual hours I decided to do the 2 minute job of swapping it out myself. Panic averted and everyone none the wiser. HBJB
  8. Are you getting 4015 errors as well? Check your pointers. Edit: Sorry - just read the clueless bit. Make sure that you have a pointer that lists your DNS server in the Reverse Lookup Zone or if you haven't got any zones set one up (or more depeding on your setup) and create a pointer to the DNS server. 9. Definatly available. I have a few of them in use here. The ones I use can take either optical drives or hard drives since it has a blanking plate supplied with it. I suspect they're all like that. HBJB

    HP Cashback

I just bought 40 laptops, got £1000 cashback. It was dead simple. Just fill in a form send a copy of the invoice and the job's a goodun. We didn't have to raise an invoice - unless that letter's going to hit the Bursar's desk soon. They just said that a cheque made out to the school would be on its way to us. Thanks HP {holds breath} HBJB
  12. I moved ours on to the domain years ago and it's far more secure. Plus if you want to use Windows Authentication to let your users log in it'll need to be on the domain. HBJB
  13. It's probably just a easy to get a new print server with USB and LTP ports. We had a similar proble a couple of years back and did exactly that. HBJB
  14. D'oh indeed!! I've made sure I saved copies of my spread sheet and printed out the relevant info for each cabinet and put a copy in each cab. I've also added which switches are in the cab, their serial numbers, mac addresses, ip addresses, stacking information and where the fibre comes and goes to. Mapping the ports to the eventual socket was the hard part since they're all over the school and very few had been named and of those that were they didn't necessarily match up with the cabinet since over the years things have been added and removed etc. Also the problem of differing naming conventions arose here as well. Plus there's only one of me at the moment. I did manage to pull out a few dozen redundant cables that were for rooms that have since been linked by fibre so I freed up some space that way but I did find 7 that I could not trace at all. Only one of them had active equipment on the end of it so I guess I'll have to wait for someone to scream in September that their printer/pc/wireless does not work before I can solve that one. HBJB
  15. I've just re-patched our entire 42U cab because it was bursting at the seams with patch panels and switches. Some of the patch panels were 16 port ones, some were 32 and others were 24. I've changed them all for 24 ports ones and swapped out our older 16 port switches with 48 port ones. I've now got loads of room in there. Yipee!! Re-patching the 300 or so cables took some time I can tell you but it was worth it. I also made all of the patch leads up myself to the correct sizes and our cabinet now has a rather nice centre parting and colour coded sections (different colours for servers, uplinks, routing/internet etc). Because most of the cables were installed by lazy companies there was no map of where everything went so I had to trace each and every cable to the socket in the rooms and label them (loads of walking done). Only another 9 cabinets to go now. :? HBJB
  16. Thanks. Hope it goes well. HBJB
  17. What was the glitch and the KB No.? Just in case someone else (me ) gets the same problem. HBJB
  18. I have it downloaded but I'm holding off installing for now because I need (want) to do the Personnel conversion first and test that before I launch into the one that could go tragicly wrong. Anyone installed it yet? HBJB
  19. It's called R2R here. It stands for Route to Review and it's really, really upset many people because it's effectively telling them that they only type or that their level of knowledge does not constitute the pay that they're on at the moment. Some schools have dished out all of their "evaluations" but I've yet to see mine despite everyone else having theirs. This leads me to think that it's not good news at all. Some people report examples like the Site Manager getting less points than the Lunchtime Supervisor, Finance Assistants/Bursars being graded less than Office staff and Network Managers being dropped to Technician status. Not that all those jobs aren't important and worthy in their own right. Seems like an exercise in reducing overall pay packets to me. Here they're using the Greater London scales to calculate our points and so far I've not heard of anyone being told what points will equate to which pay scale and we're expected to sign this agreement effective blind. Guess what - I foresee loads of appeals being put in come September. Does anyone have a points/Pay table they care to PM to me for a loose comparison of what we're likely to get? HBJB
  20. Also Budgetcom. I've used them for ages now and the prices seem OK. HBJB
  21. This is a very good idea. There aren't even any links I can find to them. If people want something they go to the SIMS manager or if they are desperate to read the manual they could go to him/us for a copy. Along with that, can anyone explain the hundreds of files that are skipped in the installation, even in a brand new clean install?! I concur. Why read a manual when we're at the end of the phone . Some of the manual links don't work on our system anyway. At most you need a central, server based store of manuals that gets updated if needed. HBJB
  22. We've had loads of staff leave this year and I'm a couple of laptops short 'cos they've not returned them despite letters and reminders. the site staff and bursar are worried about their keys as well since no-one (not one) has handed them in. If they're not returned by the end of the first week back we'll be sending them another reminder then a bill for a replacement. HBJB
  23. I actually put the serial number that was on a luggage label tied to the server when it arrived (sophisticated eh?) As it happens it was both PSUs that had failed at the same time - not uncommon so the engineer said - which makes a mockery of paying extra for redundancy. It's fixed now so fingers crossed. Cheers HBJB
  24. Freudian slip? Why not - they're both valid points? It would be nice to have an MSI to install SIMS and it would also be nice to have faster, less bandwidth sucking updates as well. Personally since we started using Lesson Monitor and our SIMS machines went from 35ish Admin PCs to 120 regularly using SIMS all day long, updates have been a bit of a nightmare. Not to mention when we have a training session and two PC suites of 30 are trying to update all at the same time. I experimented with running a batch file that that ran SIMSLoad when the machine stared but had limited success and it seemed to be random luck if a PC took the upgrade properly. I ended up changing the SIMS shortcuts that our staff see to just point to Pulsar.exe and let SIMSLoad run in the staff logon script. This seems to be the best option for us since it only checks for an upgrade once a day (unless the PC is switched off) and speeds up getting at LM. I've had no complaints since I did this - people even thanked me for "speeding it up". Phil, I know I've heard these points mentioned at SIMS roadshows in the past, I'm just surprised that they haven't been voted for on the web site (not that that makes a difference in many cases :? ). HBJB
  25. Yep - in for all 6 long, busy weeks. Too many jobs to mention and still getting more added to the list by people who "forgot" to tell me their plans when they thought about them 3 months ago. Gits. HBJB
