They did send me the genuine SQL 2005 media. Don't know if it's because I added it to our MS Agreement though. HBJB

Same boat here. I have recently put SIMS on a new server and ordered "full" SQL 2005. I asked for 2000 but was told that the supplier (Ramesys) could not get the 2000 media any more. I was unsure about putting Backup Exec 11d on this server since it uses 2005 express and I didn't know how SIMS/MSDE 2000 would react so used remote agent to back it up. WOrks fine. HBJB

My 11d came with 5 included "Desktop" licenses which I took to meaning that it is able to backup workstations if required. I think it works in a similar way to the Agents though. As for the SQL license, I've checked mine and it doesn't mention anywhere that it's able to backup SQ Server databases but our SIMS databases are defiantly being backed up correctly. We are not using "full" SQL yet as I've not had a chance to install it yet so I don't know if this has any bearing on it. HBJB

That would appear to be the case but they still sell a full SQL version. I recently purchased 2 x 11d and 5 agents and they all work well and with the Ultrium drives. I was surprised that the agent backed up our SIMS server including the databases without having to stop the SQL service. Very expensive but works well. On a related note, 11d has just started borking out on the Shadow Copy Component. It used to work fine but has just stopped working on all BE installations including agents. The error code, which escapes me at the moment, indicated that there is a fix from MS but you have to apply for it and I can't seem to find out how to do so. Any one else see this type of error? Sorry, just got in! PDF is generated by php and some fancy add on that does the trick. I forget exactly which one at the moment. Can find out though. Site is removed but it's a bit crippled right now since I've just started moving 400 odd curriculum pcs into a new domain (re-imaging at the same time) and our web server is one of them. All you'll get is the external bit with none of the content that's soaped from internal. Check back after half term. Once all the references from the old domain/ip range are removed from the php code and replaced with the new ones it'll be back up. HBJB

We have a pdf newsletter generated on the fly when the newsletter page is visited. Consequently this pdf is always up to date . It pulls the specified ammount of "latest" news articles and add the Heads messages and other general news items. We also mail shot our newsletter subscribers when ever a new article is put up. The mailshot is dynamic so that if a subscriber has a year 7 student and a year 11 student in the school they only get the relevant year news and the general school news etc. We are experimenting with an html/plain text version news letter as a mail shot but are finding that it behaves differently depending on the mail proggy used, ie RM EasyMail (spit) adds erroneous exclamation marks but Squirrel mail treats it ok. I think we'll ditch it and stick with the links to the news articles. It just works. HBJB

My Head has asked that I get her a Blackberry ASAP as she's off to the UAE for a conference or something. Now, she's specificly asked for a Blackberry but I think she may just mean a decent PDA or similar. Does anyone use a Blackberry, which type is the best and where can I get one? Our usual suppliers don't seem to keep them. Thanks HBJB

OK, it turned out that the test machine we were using does not want to pick up very much from the AD, no software installs or printers but it does apply the user policies (?). We had it in a test OU so we didn't notice the lack of software installation until I added it to an existing OU. In desperation we tried a different test machine and it worked a treat. Thanks to those that responded though. HBJB

NetStumbler is great. We were getting all sorts of dropouts on our wireless and NetStumbler pointed out that there were loads of BTHomeHubs in the area all on the same channel and all overlapping some of ours. These HomeHub things seem to have a really really wide transmit area since we can pikc them up when we're 300m from the nearest house. It's causing havoc so I've elected to go with a 11a setup. It should keep us safe for a while. HBJB

Same here with 4 PCs. We dual boot them with XP with the W98 pretty much crippled. I had a right moan at the SENCO the other month because she bought 3 new SuccessMaker licences but for W98 not XP :twisted:. I was a bit surprised you could still get them. When asked why she did this since she has XP boxes in the room she replied "Well I know this version". Gaaaaahh!! HBJB

Looked into that but couldn't get it to stop coming up with the dialog box on the Print server itself. For example, I send a job to print from a workstation, at the server I get the dialog box about where to save the file . Naturaly I didn't see this at the workstation so couldn't save the files where I wanted. In fact there was no dialog at all, as far as the workstation was concerned the job had printed. Cheers HBJB

@NetworkGeezer I'll investigate both options. Any idea which would be most effecient? They both require a small amendment to the logon script and a local script/reg patch so it may be swings and roundabouts. I'm not thinking straight today since I was removing old machines until 10pm on Thursday, installing new ones on Friday on my own since both techs decided to be ill :x (another late night), spent Saturday transfering home folders and other files from the old server to the new ones and part of Sunday tidying up all the mess. That seems to do the business. I've exported the key and made a reg file, tweaked it for each different printer and dropped it on the local machine. Then I've added an "if exist file.reg regedt /s file.reg" in the user logon script in the OU for admin staff. Thanks for your help. HBJB

Nope! That didn't work and I had already tried that but in a slightly different way (copying the "good" profile, deleting the Default User one and then renaming the copy as Default User). I thougt I asume it's not working because we use a profile that's delivered from the server and not the local one. Cheers HBJB

Hi there, I've been searching around the forum but can't find anything that fits the bill so here goes. We are in the process of joining our two current networks into one that's newly created (completely seperate). On Friday I rolled in 45 new admin machines to replace their old ones and have joined them all to our new domain. I am having an issue in that these PCs all have PDFCreator on them which sets up a printer. In the rollout image we've been using, this printer is the default because no other printers are installed. When the machines were deployed I then set up all of the users printers which are mainly local ones and are not all the same type. This is all fine, however I cannot find a way to make the one I've just installed the default for all of the users that may log on. They all default to the PDF printer which is causing me a great number of support calls. We are using a default profile from the Netlogon folder so I can't set it from there. I don't foresee a problem when we bring our curriculum machines into the mix since I've modified a script from this site to check the PC name and apply a default printer, but in the mean time for admin if I were to do it by script I'd have one as long as my arm. Am I missing the obvious here? Cheers HBJB

The only thing with PatchIT is that as soon as you stop paying for Visionsofts anual agreement the patching stops and you have to use something else. I've not used it for that reason. I never know if we're going to renew or not. HBJB
