Forgot to mention that I tried a new cable (tested) and plugged it into different ports and even different switches. I'm going to try the user environment debug mode tomorrow to see if I can extract any useful (read as understandable) info from it. Latest drivers installed Cheers HBJB

Thanks, (been to that page ). It's only this one machine that's affected. Some other PCs that have been setup today and yesterday pull the GPO items fine. It still does it when it's the only machine turned on. Cheers HBJB

Hi, I have one machine that I use for testing/msi creation etc. that regularly gets re-imaged and until now has not had a problem. It now refuses to have any software or policies deployed to it via GPO. It's been freshly imaged, new ssid applied, joined the domain and happily picks up drive mappings and logon/logoff scripts. I ran gpresult and got the following: Microsoft (R) Windows (R) XP Operating System Group Policy Result tool v2.0 Copyright (C) Microsoft Corp. 1981-2001 Created On 19/04/2007 at 14:46:50 RSOP results for [edited]\administrator on TESTBOX1 : Logging Mode --------------------------------------------------------------------- OS Type: Microsoft Windows XP Professional OS Configuration: Member Workstation OS Version: 5.1.2600 Domain Name: [edited] Domain Type: Windows 2000 Site Name: Default-First-Site-Name Roaming Profile: Local Profile: C:\Documents and Settings\administrator.[edited] Connected over a slow link?: Yes COMPUTER SETTINGS ------------------ CN=TESTBOX1,OU=Machines,DC=[edited],DC=local Last time Group Policy was applied: 19/04/2007 at 14:26:03 Group Policy was applied from: N/A Group Policy slow link threshold: 500 kbps Applied Group Policy Objects ----------------------------- N/A The following GPOs were not applied because they were filtered out ------------------------------------------------------------------- Local Group Policy Filtering: Not Applied (Empty) The computer is a part of the following security groups: -------------------------------------------------------- BUILTIN\Administrators Everyone NT AUTHORITY\Authenticated Users USER SETTINGS -------------- CN=Administrator,OU=Network Admins,DC=[edited],DC=local Last time Group Policy was applied: 19/04/2007 at 14:46:13 Group Policy was applied from: logon.[edited].local Group Policy slow link threshold: 500 kbps Applied Group Policy Objects ----------------------------- Network Admin Logon Scripts & Drive Maps Admin Policies The following GPOs were not applied because they were filtered out ------------------------------------------------------------------- Local Group Policy Filtering: Not Applied (Empty) The user is a part of the following security groups: ---------------------------------------------------- Domain Users Everyone BUILTIN\Users BUILTIN\Administrators NT AUTHORITY\INTERACTIVE NT AUTHORITY\Authenticated Users LOCAL Schema Admins Enterprise Admins Domain Admins Group Policy Creator Owners Now, the bit I'm concerned with is the "Connected over a slow link?: Yes" part. This naturaly stops certain things happening via GPO (software nstallions, redirects etc) but I don't understand why it's reporting this. The machine is new, has a ip reservation allocated and has always worked before. I changed the AD settings for Slow Link Detection" to enabled and "0" (effectivly disabling it) but gpresult still shows it at the default of 500. I can ping the server and get a <1ms response. and can copy large files at great speed over the network. The machine is now connected directly to the same gigabit switch that the server is plugged into and I even slapped in a new 3com gigabit card to see it was a fault NIC but there was no change. Any ideas what to try next? DNS issue perhaps? Cheers HBJB

It only applies if your server products have been added to the agreement. It's an option you have to sign into. Other ways to get it are if you've purchased a 2003 license recently. See your vendor to get hold of the R2 serial number. We do not have our server licenses on our SA package but I had recently purchased 5 new licenses and our supplier (Ranesys) just gave us the code (when asked for) and I downloaded the package from the MS site. need advice on assigning printers based on classroom
Heebeejeebee replied to projector1's topic in Windows
Off topic but how did you create that example? That's the sort of thing I need to do for some of our staff but the software I've managed to find is clunky and doesn't make smooth animations. Now back to topic. We tried R2's push printers features and had to go back to a script that picks up the room names because the printers were not always being installed with R2 (see this thread) HBJB -
When we re-organised our pastoral system a while back and made "non teachers" head of house effectively, one of our teachers had the nerve to say to governors that parents don't want to talk to monkeys, they want to see a real person. I think they got a real bollocking but that's the type of level some staff think we're on. Most are respectful but you get the odd pillock. HBJB

Thanks. I've downloaded all the relvant stuff from MS. Looks straightforward enough. I don't need to do it, I was just intersted in what happenes and how it does the job. HBJB

Q. How does renaming a domain affect affect the workstations? I assume they all need to be re-configured. I've never renamed a "live" domain before only test ones and have had the luxury of setting up all or my domains from scratch or in tandem with existing ones. HBJB ps sorry to hijack your thread like that.

I had a similar problen once with HP printers (cheapo laser 1020 range). Found this that may help in you case though. It's in Google English but you can get the idea. HBJB

To those who actually charge their students real money. How do your parents react? When our school's budget was cut by over £200,000 one year while all of the other schools in the LEA were getting more (we're foundation), our head asked the parents for a voluntary donation of £5 pa and the crap hit the fan right away. We had the TV, radio and newspapers at the school gates the following day and they gave the school a right slagging of for asking for the money. If we start charging them for there work I'll have to go to work in a chainmail suit! A lot of schools ask for donations but our parents got really upset about it. I'd love to charge our students for all the wasted crud they print but I fear that I'd be on the phone to irate parents all day long. We spent nearly £7,000 on toner and ink last year and it needs to be reduced. Mind you the bill went up as soon as they started charging faculties the true cost of photocopying 'cos they all started to send their 1,000 page documents to the lasers instead. HBJB

Just to clarify a few things (since we have a member of SMT off at the moment and all of the proposed E-reg stuff has landed on my desk ) We need to get some form of registration that will link seamlessly with SIMS, allow the registers to be taken at the beginning of each lesson and be as simple as possible. A bonus would be some form of browser based app so that SIMS didn't have to be loaded at the beginning of each period. It'll probably have to be a Capita product 'cos SMT say so. Does Lesson Monitor (Take Register?) do all this? Any and all advice welcome. Pitfalls, problems, technical issues etc. Cheers HBJB

Not sure it this is the right place to post this but here goes: We have a single TDS Activboard 75 (Toshiba ?) that we need to get hold of the software for. The department it's in do not have the original CD anymore and Google and the Toshiba website provide no answers. I think that XP treats it as a standard graphics tablet if plugged into a USB port but this one appears only to have a serial connector. I suspect I need the original drivers to get it to work. The other software would be nice as well. Why oh why do departments go off and buy their own equipment without taking advice? All of our other boards are Smart and Hitachi. Anybody know where to get hold of this? Cheers HBJB

Staff question - why do you have access to my password?
Heebeejeebee replied to Halfmad's topic in General Chat
Just had a staff laptop in (not networked yet). Said member of staff has passworded their (local) account and not told us the password. So I click on password hint and it pops up a single word and - yep - you guessed it - it's the account password. Needless to say it's changed now. I might even them them what it is. HBJB -
We've been asked to do this as well. Any hints/tips/restrictions etc. welcome. I hear that you can't call them "Podcasts" though 'cos of Apple and it's lawyers. HBJB

lol. I've got one sat in my office at the moment. I'm not quite sure where to put it. It's ugly, quite large and has a CRT monitor. As such no-one wants it (ingrates). I think I'll use it for as a test box (MSI creation etc). HBJB

Oooh, I've not heard about that, what's the tool called? HBJB

You haven't told us what information you want to export but: Open SIMS. Go to "Reports" then "Run Reports" or "Design Reports" if a generic one doesn't fit the bill. Make sure all the reports are imported from the latest updates though. As for the scheduling - I don't think it can be done. It would be nice though. HBJB

Create shortcut to a program that isn't installed on server
Heebeejeebee replied to katem's topic in How do you do....it?
I've had this before and got around it by doing the following: Recreate the folder path on the machine you're trying to make the shortcut on ie make a folder c:\program files\proggy\ then create a text file or similar and rename it proggy.exe (or whatever). Create the shortcut then remove the items you just made. You might have an icon issue but at least it'll run. HBJB -
