If your going to buy SLG you may as well use that as your VLE too. It's a sharepoint solution after all and it puts everything in one place. The great thing about SLG is that it gives you read/write access to SIMS and will easily fulfil the 2010 requirements. That said I am not sure that I would say sharepoint is any easier or more difficult than Moodle to use. I think it's just a matter of getting familiar with any product and that does take time. When we were evaluating VLEs I think one of the easiest to use was Frog but I don't have clue what Frog have done about SIMS integration at the moment. I don't know where you are based but CLEO are working on the MIDAS project to integrate SIMS with Moodle. It's anybodys guess how well that will go. I was supposed to be going to a meeting about that today but it all came through at a bit short notice.

As I see this it doesn't matter if it's his house or school's house. If it's his personal home broadband that is unsecured it's his business (like it would be if the students were connecting to one anywhere with the vicinity). The fact he is an employee of the school is irrelevant - it's not a problem with his professional duties or his performance. If you were to connect to it and interfere with his computers/setup torrent downloads etc you would be the one breaking the law. It's not very smart for him having an unsecured network but I don't see as there is a lot you can do about it.

It's also the second time it's been advertised. Perhaps because it's only a 12 month contract?

We have an OU set up for each room of computers and each OU has it's own software deployment policy which contains all the software for that room.

I got out of it as we were about to be doing a major project at the last place I worked. The boss wrote to them explaining this and I was exempted. Never been asked again.

We use them in South Lakes and it's fine here.

Is it possible to chose software not to install? It's seems really useful but we don't have Promethean for example. Samsung have a really neat splash screen when you run the drivers/software disk which lets you tick the options you want then installs all the ticked ones with no further user intervention.

They repeated them back to back on Easter Monday, which is when I caught them. Thought they were pretty poor myself but then I thought the series itself got worse towards the end.

I'd have to agree with that in the school I'm at. The vast majority of our staff count their blessings and realise in the current climate they are doing pretty well.

Our students start with 350Mb each. Students doing graphics and DiDa are often around the 500Mb mark and some need even more. We try to be reasonable but we do ensure if a student comes in asking for more space any rubbish in their area is deleted first. Storage doesn't over bother me as it's pretty cheap - backing it all up does though and it is an area we will have to look at soon.

I think read only is fair enough. In terms of privacy our AUP says that we can look in their documents areas etc. I think staff are professional enough to do it when needed though.

We do it just as described and we have little or no trouble when staff run an upgrade. We warn them when it is coming and they just run SIMS 1st thing the day after. It takes no more than 2 or 3 mins from first clicking the icon and most people seem to not mind it as long as they have been warned. Most of our staff run SIMS on their laptops so we wouldn't have access to them anyway.

We setup some special exam user accounts once whihc the teacher issued to the students. These were then enabled/disabled as needed.

Are your LP+ usernames based around UPN? If so export your list from SIMS, stick it next to the LP+ list in excel, a quick formula to compare the username (LP+) & UPN (SIMS), correct any errors. Once that's done just mailmerge away.

We use the normal behaviour management system as it is pretty well tried and tested in school. We used to do our own thing and ban people etc but came to the conclusion is was pretty pointless: 1) Because teacher A banned and teacher B next lesson would need student on the internet/network 2) To a large extent it didn't make sense, after all we wouldn't stop a student using books if they mis-used one so why do we do it for IT. 3) More often than not the issues revolve around classroom management so we don't need or want to be involved. 4) Students know and understand the existing behaviour system so it fits well - they know what to expect etc. 5) It was a royal PITA for me to issue and manage detentions and if I'm honest probably had little effect on future behaviour (not that I think the current system has on some students!)

May be worth talking to Tony at Cartridge World in Kendal. He does all ours and they give up an excellent service, taking away all the empties and remanufacturing them for us.

We just bought a load of Samsung NC10s and I like them lots. Perhaps a little over budget though. We also bought a Lenovo S10e - again very nice and it was £216 ex VAT with Windows Home, 1Gb RAM, 160 GB hard disk etc.
