I tend to agree with maniac. We used to ban but found it didn't change behaviour and staff would ban someone 1 lesson then the next lesson another member of staff would need them unbanned for course work or something. This year we just did away with banning and started to treat ICT offences like any other and attached a range of punishments like we do for offences.

Yep - we've got exactly the same problem here. I think we have 7 new BTECs starting this year all with IT needs.

This isn't that new an idea is it. I thought in parts of Europe they already ran schools at a different time for similar reasons. I maybe wrong - it's some half remembered conversation with one of our French French teachers.

I guess we're lucky then because our library is used all the time and we have a fantastic LRC manager. It's open from 8.15 in the morning to 6 in the evening and whenever I go in there are groups using it for ICT, homework, reading etc. Our students would certainly miss it if we were to shut it down. I disagree that you can redistriubute it - our LRC manager runs many initiatives that English simply would not have time to do which really pull students in. Having somewhere in school where students can hang out and be encouraged to read (something many boys particularly don't do) is an excellent facility and one we'd really struggle without.

The software is irrelevant - it is people that print and send out letters.

At our place our reprographics guy (who works term time only) does the PAT testing in the holidays. He is paid extra for that (I think he does it on a cost per item tested basis). Mind you he does say it's his hobby!

I think it is one of many measures you would take to keep it secure. Personally I think you should have AV on all your systems. Secure configuration and practices don't mean you shouldn't have AV installed - it's just another line of defence.

I suspect your RBC would be none too impressed either as AV is stipulated as a must have in the T&C for most of them (it certainly is in CLEO land). Also in terms of data protection I would suggest turning off AV does not qualify as ensuring data is secure (one of the basic principles).

I'm not clear exactly what you want here but in lesson monitor reports there is a report that lets you compare marks between sessions/lessons so you could run that and get it to identify everyone who was in for AM reg but not P1. If that is not what you're after I have just written a report that looks at all P1 marks on a given day. That would show you all the marks for P1. I'll attach it so you can have a look. We use LP+ for our VLE along with several other secondaries in our Federation. I won't say it's been a totally smooth road but we are getting there now and we are using it with several departments to deliver materials to the students. I'm not saying it's cutting edge but it *is* being used. Of the "pilot departments" some are doing more than others e.g. our business dept. used to burn CD's every year with past papers, revision notes etc - this year they are all on the VLE. As I say, not cutting edge but very useful and the students seem to be happy with it. They are also very into creating their My Site. All student email is now via LP+ using OWA which seems to work well. We are now starting to roll it out for staff, in terms of making this the place where they all go to get bulletins, info etc. This is a fairly organic process with lots of consulation along the way. Now I don't say it is perfect but we do meet often with LP+ to discuss issues and I think it would be fair to say they have bent over backwards to make this work for us. We still have a way to go and issues to work through but as a company LP+ have listened to us and understood why we wanted things. Happy to be contacted via PM if I can help further.

We haven't done it but I was thinking of doing something very similar. We have played around with a single EeePC and attached it to our terminal server and it seemed to work fine. Be interested to know if anyone had done it with a larger quantity.

All our students use the email in our VLE (LP+/Sharepoint/Exchange/OWA). This is subject to a filtering process. Before that they all had CLEO email accounts.

Potentially it costs you money. If you are on a capped service and someone uses it illegally to download stuff this could put you over your limit for which you pay!

I see your point but it's pretty poor when you can't trust fellow professionals not to trash your workspace. I guess I'm lucky here because that sort of thing just doesn't seem to happen.
