  1. £25 is for the install. We don't charge for maintenance as some of that falls within our technology college bid. As for on call fees - I *think* our site managers get a payment for being on call (not huge) then get a minimum of 2 hours pay at double time if they are called out.
  2. We undertake such projects for our feeder primary schools. When we do the technicial staff involved get paid £25 per hour.
  3. I would buy PCs that have a licence for Vista with downgrade (or should that be upgrade) rights and then you can run XP to start with and upgrade to Vista if you felt like it later.
  4. Sure do
  5. We've got snow in Kendal which is a bit of a pain as there is a group of us off to North Wales tomorrow morning with 220 year 7s
  6. That's why I never leave the asprin lying around - if you do the parrots eat em all
  7. The Time Travellers Wife Lovely Bones The Eyre Affair or anything by Ian Rankin
  8. I think you need to be careful with that approach. If you train them all on Sharepoint for example and then move to Frog much of the training becomes irrelevant. I know some of it is still useful but the mechanics of using the VLE will be different. I know from our Federation of schools how unpopular those sort of changes can be!

  10. I love my USB cup warmer I got at BETT - very useful!
  11. I have done something similar using RTF reports IIRC http://www.eiskent.co.uk/SIMSQuickReference/SIMSHelpSheets/How%20to%20Create%20and%20Use%20RTF%20Templates.pdf
  12. I use Irfanview IrfanView - Official Homepage - one of the most popular viewers worldwide
  13. It sounds like you're having a pretty bad time of it. Very best wishes for the future.
  14. Sharing data with other staff is a reasonable thing to do but certainly not with students.
  15. Yes but the OP asked what jobs people moved into after working in schools. I was pointing out that gaining a grounding in a range of technologies (as you do in a school) then opens up many possibilites both inside education (FE/HE) and outside in the wider world. I seem to be in an endless cycle of training junior techs who then promptly upsticks and go to the local uni for double the money (not that I blame or begrudge them that)
  16. That's not true at all. There are loads of other careers in education and many outside. Web design, network design, network specialists, Windows administrator, VLE content designer, project manager, data manager, field service engineers etc etc and the list goes on. Those are just some of the posts I've seen in the last couple of months at local schools/universitys.
  17. We did a lot of background donkey work first of all so when we started to train on the VLE (a sharepoint solution for us) we had already got a lot of the bugs ironed out. It also meant we knew the system reasonably well. We then did a training session (about 3 hours) with a number of departmental champions who were keen on getting this going. Myself and another person also attended the session so we could talk through our vision for use in our school. The staff who were trained (mainly not HoDs) have since gone back to their departments and are developing VLE content/usage within their depts. They also act as point of contact for departments who haven't yet had anybody trained. For me (and my view has changed over the life of the project so far) important things are SLT supporting you, not every department has to use it now or even in the same way, there is no one size fits all solution. For example our head of IT is mad keen and is channelling lots of time and resource into basically converting all their materials for VLE use. The kids seem to love accessing lessons via it. Our science dept. are also very keen and making good use of it. Another department has just used it to make revision stuff available (normally he would be asking us to burn CDs) - again his students now have that material at home etc and love it. The art dept are making less use but even a simple thing like uploading a picture and starting a discussion board is valuable. Eg asking every child to post a comment for homework. The point I guess I am making is that we are happy to help people use it however they see fit for them. The students love the My site and are using it to email, create profiles and store files. All in all I am pleased with how it's going. Happy to have a natter if I can give you any more info.
  18. I tried that too and get the same result. I'm thinking it must be related to CLEO proxy or something. What settings have you got configured for VLC?
  19. That is what is should do. Sadly mine doesn't (even with Connect to the internet ticked).
  20. Hi folks I am trying to get the mms on this page Accents and dialects of the UK to play for our English department. It fires up Windows Media player but refuses to connect. I think I've got our proxy settings right in media player but am getting nowhere. Media player just errors saying it can't connect. Any ideas what to try? Cheers
  21. We're allowed to take 5 days per year in term time.
  22. I have had some success with issues like these by creating a shortcut winword.exe /a Get the user to run this once and see how they get on next time. It's cured some oddities for me in the past.
  23. Relax. Good appraisal should be a supportive process not a telling off. Also if there are any things you feel your boss does wrong in managing you don't be afraid to tell him. As a manager I'd rather hear of problems to my face rather than on the grapevine. Ensure you get any requests for training/development mentioned and preferably listed on the appraisal.
  24. Well I have. We installed it on a small number of laptops which then blue screen when you plug usb mice or printers in. Funny thing is uninstall it and reinstall straight afterwards and it seems to be ok!
  25. I'm not sure about this but could it be to do with the version of SCORM that Hot Pot outputs. I have a faint recollation that it needs to be SCORM 2004 and Hot Pot doesn't output that. I may be way off beam though as it is a very vague recollection.
