We combined PAT unplugging with FET unplugging. Somehow reached the point where we had more items unplugged than we had sockets, a black hole formed, and we lost a whole portacabin. Thankfully testing was paid for by our LEA, and I ran around after them fixing the mess, but not sure on per item costs. As they wanted to test ALL THE THINGS I suspect it was significant.

I’ve got somewhere with network share mounting - the Network Share Mount app works, and I’ve used a IMaginary profile to configure it. Been a right pain to get it autostarting (needs to be *insisted*!) and still have a bug. Currently had to rename the app to remove spaces in its name [emoji28] Provisioning apps, DEP, ASM integration etc will all have to come later - I manually built my test Mac here (I miss DeployStudio!)

Feedback I read on using Intune with Macs was appalling, which stopped me in my tracks on that one. My experience with Jamf School so far is good - it is insanely fast updating the profile, it just can't seem to mount network shares which is a shame.
-
We have both, automatically synced and managed so they run side-by-side. The Google side doesn’t get much use but our Chromebooks plug into it all, and if any staff start who prefer GC they’re welcome to do so.

You create a new user which matches the details that are entered for them as staff - when you click Continue it asks you to match it against a known user. That process basically replaces SM6.

That I realise - PM simply doesn't work with MacOS 10.15 or later IME, nor with iPads newer than iOS 10. As I'm pushing to MacOS 12 and beyond I need Jamf or similar which I'm trialling.
-
At present, I've sacked off user based profiles and I've just enrolled the device, then logging in with an AD bound account. Jamf is then (just about) managing the settings from there. Not great, but 1000% better than broken Profile Manager so far! I saw about the enrollment stage and have adjusted my expectations accordingly.

No one using Jamf School with shared Macs?
-
We currently have 50 or so Macs, bound tom AD and managed with Profile Manager. This solution is end of life. I'd like to use a similar but more modern approach to managing our Macs - user logs in at logon screen with their details (local AD, Azure, whatever) and gets settings issued by Jamf School. A lot of the Jamf documentation revolves around assigning the device to the user - that won't be happening. I just want them to log on. I have Azure linked to Apple School Manager. I have ASM linked to Jamf School (in some order). How do I fairly simply achieve what I need? Is it a case of using the LDAP setup with Jamf School, and if so how does it link user profile settings (like restrictions etc) to that LDAP user? I have looked at the documentation, but hoping someone has done the same things and can guide me a bit as I'm going in circles with what is currently rather a complex interconnected mess!

Can SYSTEM read and write the folder? I can’t remember if that’s necessary nor which account it needs, but DFS-R acts like a user when it tries to write files (I’ve managed to get on the wrong side of FSRM with it). Check the ACLs for the other shares.

Been through that pain when our ISP stopped allowing Teams traffic straight through the firewall but didn’t tell us, it wouldn’t work until I pulled the addresses out of the exceptions list! That was a fun day.

You need to give this more time - eating well is more important that browsing guff on X in the morning [emoji6] Sarnies can certainly get boring, but it may still pay to plan a rotation of foods - couple of days of sandwiches, one soup, a pasta dish, a salad. Then buy them from a supermarket and prepare them - you’ll save a lot of money and control what’s in them/portions etc much better. Worth five minutes a day!

Exchange 2019 CU14 (aka 2023 H2 Cumulative update)

Yeah I have that on our SIMS TPC, but there are some legacy hang-ons on our Exchange server. They’ll be wound down over the next two years. -
Exchange 2019 CU14 (aka 2023 H2 Cumulative update)

I still run 2016 onsite for Salamander integration and for management tasks, as well as some internal service mail flow. I’m hoping that I can completely retire this in 2025 when Exchange 2016 goes EoL. 2019’s system requirements are so vast that I never bothered with it. -
Wrote off going karting today due to the bad weather forecast. Weather was glorious. Bit of work in the workshop, then my first proper track session for 3 months, which went okay. Extended rest and recovery otherwise over the next few days!

Remember that the user/group will need read permission from the share that holds the client app, and NTFS permissions too.

Does anyone still come in early for results downlaod?
3s-gtech replied to Rob_D's topic in How do you do....it?
Used to be 6am, this year 7am. Exams Officer was struggling yesterday as they forgot to overwrite an old results file of the same name so SIMS wasn’t seeing the new one. That alone made the early start worthwhile. This was our first set of summer results using SIMS Connected so caution was best. -
cable from building to unmanaged switch managed switch
3s-gtech replied to 5nowman's topic in Wired Networks
Yes. Moving from Cisco to Aruba, I had to have several outlying rooms re-cabled as some ports no longer worked. When tested, they had cable faults. They worked in the old Cisco and previous HP switches! -
Have a look at https://www.papercut.com/help/manuals/ng-mf/clienttool/user-client-install-windows/ before going too far down the rabbit hole - specifically: cmd /c "start \\printservername\PCClient\win\pc-client-local-cache.exe --silent" or the way I do it: Group Policy / User Configuration / Administrative Templates / System / Logon / Run these programs at user logon / \\printservername\PCClient\win\pc-client.exe IME this just works.

I did a couple of laptop cabinets recently (one snapped key, one lost keys!) Only cost a few quid - the locks are usually interchangeable as you've seen. The manufacturer of the cabinet wouldn't be any help - they'd just buy the locks wholesale.

Mosyle Manager - Restrict Safari and Chrome
3s-gtech replied to timbo343's topic in How do you do....it?
The iPad is built Supervised with AC2 using a Mac. This involves a wipe of the OS - at least it has in my experience - then it's rebuilt in Supervised Mode. There's only so much you can do without that. -
Is it a standard lock barrel with a star drive on the back, to bolt on the cam for the locks, or something more esoteric? If it's standard, just replace it.

2 days possibly a bit keen. Two weeks is more like it. One 2 days have passed, yes it will build a new profile based off the Default. Can be slower, but shouldn’t be much if you have things set up well.

My Ciscos will not talk to stuff below 100mb. I saw similar problems when I upgraded our setup. You may also have spanning tree disabling the port (I have to disable it on any port that has a switch downstream). -
What's the oldest bit of kit you still have running?
3s-gtech replied to PrimaryTech's topic in General Chat
Last week I was handed one of those little Promethean tablets that came with the boards, complete with pen. Connect via PS/2 or round DIN serial. Still in its box with instructions. Not seen one for years. Must be 20 years old at least, if not a touch more (DIN serial connectors disappeared off PCs, what, 25 years ago?) Bit of a contrast after fitting a Dell Canvas screen in an Art classroom (and that’s not new!)
