Funnily enough I watched Galaxy Quest last night in which this sort of argument was put to bed, only to be ressurrected later. Enjoyed the Star Trek film immensely. Couldn't believe 2 hours had passed so quickly.

If you're travelling up from Worcester I would suggest Wednesday night as then you'll be able to arrive for the start of the conference. I can't really see you getting up there for a 09:30 am (?) start if you decide to travel on the day.

When I was a governor at Lowerplace (just down the road from you) the head found some old school logs from around 1865-1890 and the number of children who died during the course of a winter made for some sad reading. I believe they're in the local studies library (Touchstones) now. Fascinating stuff.

The attached is the room booking system before it was all moved online. Though it was not the techies responsibility, the book was kept in our office and could not be removed. Therefore we were constantly getting calls to see if certain IT rooms were free, and sometimes asked to arbitrate if there was a "double booking". Teachers complained that they had to walk from the other side of school to use it, so puting it online was a no brainer. A room booking system has nothing to do with making departments responsible foir their own rooms, in fact it could assist in this by nailing down which class and teacher had left a computer suite in such a state. We only use ours for booking ICT suites when the timetable allows. All other rooms are on the general school timetable anyway.

I managed to get him to remove the questions which could identify individual pupils. The survey will be no more granular than form, gender and ethnicity level, It seems the council are keen on this and the "Every Child Matters" agenda. The person who created the survey coordinates sport between half a dozen secondary schools in the borough. He's paid SurveyMonkey $200 to set this up and I suspect that he'll have to fork out another $200 to make the changes and this may be what drove him to pay me a personal visit. His own school have already taken the full survey, and as you say GD, that can be stripped out before been opened to interested parties. I have no issues with SurveyMonkey themselves, other than that they are based in the States which I believe has a different attitude to data protection.

I've just been asked to link to an online survey (SurveyMonkey) asking pupils in our LEA (Years 7-10) about their sporting habits. I've seen the survey and the first few questions are - First Name Surname School Year Form Gender Now I've got a problem with these questions as I feel they are unethical and too intrusive. I've informed the PE teacher at our school that I'm not willing to add this link to our website or VLE, citibg the data protection act. He's phoned the teacher who set up this survey to report this and within the next half hour or so he'll be here to try and browbeat me into accepting this. He doesn't want to redo the questions as a couple of schools have already taken the survey. I'm equally adamant that I won't let our pupils undertake this survey without the restrictions I asked for. I sincerely believe that I'm protecting our pupils by doing this. What I need quite sharply is something relevant from the data protection act which I can bring up on screen to back up my arguement. I'll be going through it myself in a moment. Thanks in advance.

Before you know it the summer break will be here and that'll also mean moving pupils up a year etc in Moodle. As this is my first year implementing this VLE I haven't had to move students about too much. I've searched the Moodle site/forums but only come up with resetting courses. What is the recommended procedure at year's end?

Couldn't believe how straightforward joomlapack was. Took me a moment to locate the kickstart file on their site, but now everything's in place I reckon a backup and restore should take no longer than 15 minutes. Thanks again. Zak, I can recommend this method of backing up and restore.

I'd like some advice on moving a site created with the Edugeek package. I've got it working and looking the way I want, and in the summer it will replace the current version of our school website. In order to make sure this can be done I've set up another machine as a server. From my machine I've exported the database. On the server I've imported the database and set up a new Edugeek/Joomla install, replacing the axe_rescheek_red template with a copy of the altered version from my machine. Parts of the 'new' site, such as the slideshow have changed to match the original version on my old machine, but the menus, front page etc haven't changed. The information is there in the imported database, but this is not reflected on the 'new' site. What else should I move across to make the change complete?

That's a great use of blogs. Very inspiring, particularly liked the use of different Wordpress themes to highlight different areas of the curriculum. How difficult was it to get the staff blogging?

Very interesting 30 minute slot from the radio with implications for both the worlds of work and edcuation. I believe that the Head of Monkseaton School in the north east is applying to the Education Department to try out some of the findings, such as starting school a couple of hours later for adolescents to take into account the altered circadian rhythms of teenagers. (School will also finish a couple of hours later for them). I did put this to a couple of teachers today; the first one wasn't too fazed but did add the rider that if there wasn't a space in the car park then he'd go home (I'm never sure with him). The other said something along the lines of, "We'll see what the unions have to say about that" BBC iPlayer - Type A Meet Type B!!

Shouldn't I be able to browse to an image rather than input the url manually? Or is there a default image folder of which I know nothing?

We had a thin client suite set up last summer with these (tower) desks and the only problem we've encountered has come about because a teacher snapped off the key while trying to unlock the monitor housing. The company were extremely helpful, sending us two replacement locks free of charge with instructions on how to get at the broken lock etc. We had the desks installed by a third party as they were a part of a larger package deal so I can't speak for the company's installation quality. Be prepared for the little angels to accidentally trap keyboard and mice cables though.
