Am I right in thinking you go into add a mail account and select the exchange option rather than googlemail? What settings do you use from here? Thanks

Does this work in the UK? I've been using IMAP for GMail from my iPhone and read about the ActiveSync Exchange integration the other day but couldn't get it to work properly for some reason?

Well nearly five days in to my "Linux Experiment", (for those who don't know, I have been trying to use ONLY Linux for a week to try and learn a little bit), and things are going surprisingly well. I feel I have got to know, and like, Ubuntu fairly well. I do however have a couple of confessions before I begin. As I mentioned the other day, I have been using a VM of Windows 7 to get screen shots for various presentations. I have not however, been "using" the VM. Friends came over the other night and wanted to see some photographs and videos I have taken - that are all stored in my Mac. Rather than trying to figure out the best way to port them across and display on the TV, I booted into OSX and used Front Row. I'm sure if I had more time, and notice of their arrival that I would have figured something out using Linux. Apart from that, it's been Ubuntu all the way. This week I have mainly been documenting so not had to do anything too technical. I even reinstalled SUSE on my Mini Note when I needed to use it and was surprised at how much quicker it ran than W7 or even XP. I really like one of the methods to install applications using terminal. "apt-get -install "packagename"", seems so easy and will find most applications that I wanted without having to dig around to find things. My battery on my MacBook Pro seems to not last quite as long using Ubuntu as running OSX but not by a big enough margin to really be bothered about. I think the weekend will be my biggest test as I switch over from business computing to using my machine to complete various personal tasks etc, but I will see. Overall, I know now that when I start running OSX or Windows again, it will be because I want to, not because I need to. I'll admit that I had always been a little bit scared of Linux, but now I know that if the need arises to use or troubleshoot it - I am standing in much better ground than I was last week. I will no longer mock people for using it and may even install it on my file server so that I can test it on a more long term basis. Once again, thanks for all of your help suggesting application alternatives etc. Tom

I did this to a Server once in an old school I used to work at. Unfortunately the server was in a public location (terrible I know), and although nobody could access it to use, they could just hold the power button in to turn it off. I took the front off and disconnected the power button cable. Whenever I needed to turn it back on after a shutdown/powercut, I used to have to take the front off and short the pins with a screwdriver - very professional I know

I've always found VLC to be a little flakey at DVD playback - even in Leopard. Snow Leopard has made it slightly worse, but I don't care, I just use DVD Player or even Front Row to play DVD's. VLC will play everything else I throw at it anyway To go back to the original question - VLC sometimes struggles with copy protected DVD's depending on the exact copy protection method that has been applied. Have you tried it with a different DVD?

It must depend on your location. For me I have my iPhone on O2 - and have never ever had a problem with signal strength or data access. Orange phones (used to have one for work), get absolutely no signal whatsoever in or around my house. It's all down to location and what works best for you.

Jailbreaking allows the installation of third party apps (i.e. non App-Store apps), onto the phone. Unlocking is using one of the third party apps (such as ultrasn0w) to be able to use any SIM in the phone. You can jailbreak without unlocking - but you have to jailbreak if you want to unlock.

I don't see any reason why not, if it's unlocked anyway.

Bingo - you've hit the nail right on the head there. I realised a while back that I knew "nothing" about Linux at all. With more and more things either running Linux or using it in some capacity or other (web servers etc), as an "IT Professional", I think I should do what I can to find out a little bit more about it - forcing myself to use it for a while seemed to be the best way to make me learn! I know what you mean about certain people and Mac's though. I love my Mac's but only because they genuinely are the right systems for me. The amount of people that buy them however, because, they look pretty - and haven't got a clue what they are doing, still amazes me!

I bought two Mac's because I really like the way they work. Yes they are expensive but the complete "package" that they offer between hardware and software, is exactly what I was looking for. I don't regret my decision for a second and am currently looking at renewing both my MacBook Pro, and my Mac desktop. I use Windows as well for work, but everything I do at home for "personal" use is done on a Mac - and I find it so easy. I use both systems to a fairly high level and don't have any problems at all switching back and forth. My Linux experiment is literally a chance for me to try and get to know a little bit more about Linux and how it works so that I can utilise it in the future. I have looked at the Linux user groups, but to be honest I don't see myself becoming a full time Linux user - so have left them alone for now.

I thought if I stole your identity it would give you something else to talk about at your s-safety talks. A practical example if you will. If you could just e-mail me (in plain text if possible), all of your address details, financial information, mothers maiden name, first pet, etc - it would make my job so much easier

Continuing from my thread last week about my little Linux experiment (I will be using ONLY Ubuntu for at least a week, to give myself a bit of a learning curve), I am pleased to report that three hours in and I haven't been tempted to switch back once, although it is still obviously in the early stages! This morning I have been using Firefox for all of my web work (nothing special here, have used it on both Windows and OSX for ages and it's basically the same!). I have also started to play with OpenOffice's presentation, and for putting together fairly ordinary presentations, it seems like a perfectly serviceable tool. However, getting down to perhaps a little bit of cheating now. I NEED to demonstrate a couple of features of Windows 7 in a presentation I am putting together - so rather than use a real machine, I have installed Sun Virtual Box within Ubuntu and installed W7 into this. I won't be using this machine, other than for getting screen shots - I hope that's allowed

Ok I think you might have corrected me there! I seriously dread to imagine the amount of time that I spend on here, not necessarily posting, but certainly browsing through and having a read of things. It's the first thing I do in the morning when I get up - go make coffee, then sit with coffee and read EG for a bit; and normally the last thing I do at night. I suppose it must be love
