Ah, good point, I didn't think of that. I use the same sort of audio lead as that but it goes into my external amp. SOME televisions will play sound from PC in when using HDMI rather than VGA, but most don't. My Samsung 40" HD LCD doesn't - I wouldn't know about yours. If yours wont then I'm not sure what you can do other than continue to use your VGA method. I have an Apple TV with an optical out. I can use this at the same time as HDMI for picture to television and sound to amp. Does the Mac Mini have an optical out? This may be an option. Tom

I use exactly the same cable to connect my MacBook pro to my LCD HD TV. Works like a charm.

I think I'm right but if somebody could confirm that would be brilliant. VGA is not ideal for HD HDMI and DVI are actually the same thing, just with a different shape connector (and HDMI can transmit sound). You're much better of using a DVI or HDMI cable. As I say, I might be wrong though, but this is how I had it explained to me.

I use DYNDNS for other things but can it forward my registered domain to an IP address? i.e. NOT one of the DYNDNS .bounceme.net or similar. I forgot to mention in my first post that I don't want to have to pay for any hosting. I will be looking after that myself, I just need to register a domain and have it pointed at my own server. Hi all I was wondering if anybody could recommend a decent company for both registering a domain name, and providing some basic DNS services. I have always used 1&1 in the past, but their service is degrading rapidly and I am trying to pull all of my business away from them. All I need to do is register a basic .co.uk website, and have a mail forwarder to forward all mail sent to [email protected] to one of my e-mail addresses. I don't need to be able to reply with the .co.uk e-mail address. My gmail account will do fine for this. Thanks Tom

You can export a track straight from garageband (even an MP3 that you have imported), into iTunes as a ringtone from the "Share" menu.

As far as jailbreaking is concerned. Unless you really have to, at the moment don't bother. Yellowsn0w, redsno0w, ultrasn0w are all unlockers. They are not the jailbreak, they are an app that runs on a jailbroken iphone to allow any sim to work with it. The jailbreak for 3.1 on the 3GS will currently disable you from EVER unlocking the phone due to the baseband changing. I would wait until they rectify this before trying to jailbreak your phone. Also, the last time I checked, the jailbreak for the 3.1 firmware was only avaliable on Mac (if that's a problem for you), unless you download a firmware that somebody else has pre-cracked - but I wouldn't want to put this on my phone!

Although familiar with WINE, I still see this as "cheating" a little bit with what I am trying to do. I will use it if I have to, but hopefully will be going a full week using only Linux software.

I thought about doing that, but instead opted to dual-boot with OSX via bootcamp. I hope I can succeed against the "but what now", by using the natural techie in me to "Google it" I've been using Ubuntu for a couple of weeks now as a secondary OS, and getting to know it more and more rather than just jumping straight in without having a clue what I am doing - as I know if I did this, then I wouldn't succeed. The experiment is more to prove to myself that I don't have to rely on what I know, and that I can adapt to different software should the need arise. I also hope it will give me a better understanding of Linux in general and how it works, which will give me a little bit more scope for future projects that I know would work better with Linux. In the past I have always defaulted to Windows or Mac as they were "what I knew", even though I could have done so much better with Linux. Watch this space!

Thanks for that I will check them out. I jumped for Ubuntu for my trial, as it seems to have the largest support base etc. If I get on well with it then I will be looking to try other distro's as well - although not exclusively as I will be using Ubuntu. All I am doing at the moment is internet research, putting documents together, putting presentations together - so it shouldn't be too much of a problem to "make the switch".

I realised a little while ago that I have never had much experience with Linux, in any desktop environment. With it becoming more and more present all over the place I have decided to try something, probably a little bit crazy. From Monday morning, I will be using Ubuntu for everything. I hope to try and use Linux as my only operating system for both home and work use for a whole week and see how I get on. The only thing that I am looking for at the moment is a suitable iTunes replacement that will manage my iPod to a reasonable standard. Does anybody have a suggestion for good software? Or any other general suggestions that will help me on my journey? I will let you all know how I am getting on and report my progress along the way. I have set up a Linux installation via BootCamp and got basically to grips with installing software and basic use. Thanks Tom

Not meaning to be critical but I don't actually like that page turning thing. Would much rather have a link to download the whole PDF. I find doing it this way a pain, and to a non-technical person, may not be immediately obvious what they have to do to turn the page.

Don't start lol. I have an 18 month old MacBook Pro, and was purposely trying to drain the battery the other night to give it a full cycle. It gave in after about four and a half hours of rendering some video footage (some of it HD). Amazed me that a normal battery (and not a new one), could do so well. Really impressed. If it would have lasted that long if I had not wanted to drain it, I doubt very much

I had exactly the same problem with my Focus! It's something to do with the ignition circuitry on the car (No idea what, not mechanically minded). The accelerator is fly-by-wire and sends and electronic pulse to the engine management system depending on how far down it is pressed, to determine fuelling/throttle etc. A mechanic friend of mine told me of a "something" that can be added to the car to get rid of the interference, but I can't remember what it's called now sorry. Hopefully somebody else will know a little bit more. Tom

Not really my area of knowledge, but I have used HTTP Commander before. Essentially a web front end for users home directories, shared resources etc. I'm sure that this could be configured to do what you want.
