  1. As a maths undergrad i would argue that all rational number are fractions eg 4 is actually 4/1. Fractions are therefore the building blocks of all rational numbers (that is the definition of rational after all). How would define absolutely a third without a fraction? 33% is inaccurate, as is 0.33 or 0.333 or 0.3333. 1/3 is the only way you can define and manipulate a third in maths. This argument is is the same as saying why do we have vowels in English? (rhetorical) Anyone who thinks you can do maths without fractions clearly has a lack of understanding of maths.
  2. You should put a counter on the front page of users that have come back so to speak.
  3. ahh - reminds me of school. at least it's starting to change...
  4. In an OKI printer we had a coffee spill, of instant coffee. The room smelt like Starbucks every time someone printed, as did the printed work for a few days.
  5. na - don't worry about it. But wiring the door bell up via a relay to the door light would be kwl, especially if it flickers.
  6. Another thing you could do is try moving the files over it in the virtual environment to a new win98 VM and see what happens. Be interesting to know what happens.
  7. I think sage has allot of custom dll's registered. I've moved sage between machines allot and done network setups as well, but i've always had the disk and done fresh installs. win98 should run pretty quick in a virtual box, have you cleaned up the 98 machine? just out of interest - what version of sage are you running?
  8. nice one - congrats, I've had the books for over a year but not really bothered to study them - that might change now i'm at uni but who knows. Congratulations and hope you do well in any future exams you take also
  9. i actually quite like it - so i liked it
  10. do you know when it'll be comming out and what the price difference will be? EDIT; apparently they'll offically announce it on nov 9th and rummers are that teh prime wont be too much more than the transformer.
  11. I'm soon going to be getting an ASUS EEE transformer to help me with my uni studies
  12. I personally use a 25w antex iorn with a thin tip, my brother uses the same iorn but with the fatter (3-4mm)tip. While working on cables (mains) recently soldering socapex and speakon8's i was using a 45w iorn with a seperate transformer and tempreture controlled tip. the 45w is the best for cable work, and the small tipped 25w i find ideal for pcb work. 25w antex 25W Soldering Iron Type XS : Mains Soldering Irons : Maplin a newer version of the 45w weller Amazon.com: Weller WESD51 Digital Soldering Station: Home Improvement For this task i would personally use the 25w with the thin tip and a de-solder pump. If you'r not doing it; Who is? Most people who are comfortable working on laptop PCB's will have their own iron.
  13. damn - if only it were a position i could get to from Canterbury easily.
  14. Could be interesting for me doing a maths degree. I'll let people know if it's unreliable.

  16. also - the more expensive radio gear has input gain that you can adjust on the transmitter to avoid overloading the RF, also just different types of capsules have different responses, a ksm9 and a 87a have very different responses. (fyi - changing the gain of the mic before it's transmitted over RF is called 'head gain' and you should do it on each mic/transmitter combination for each person)
  17. so - does this support any kind of stylus on the touch screen? and what kind of app would suit drawing circles and lines?
  18. I think it's just the postcode as that's all the automation sorts on i think.
  19. Don't you mean - I want an IPad and I need to justify the purchase to my other half/myself/bank manager? Hard to see what an IPad can bring to the maths table no - i'm happy with any old tablet that will garentee me 6 hours of general use and can handle drawing geometric stuffs. that's kinda all i'm after. i would happily use an old RM tablet with XP and activ inspire or ubuntu and smart notebook. Battery life being the only downside of that option. the Ipad is simply what friends have and like.
  20. Evening all, I'm currently considering buying an Ipad (again) for my maths studies but would like to know of any good maths programs that will allow me to draw geometry in the forms of lines, arc's and circles aswell as write freehand on it. I'm not sure if i can use a stylus on the Ipads but would like to so would like to know if anyone knows if this is possible and where they can be purchased from. Many thanks in advance as always.
  21. awesome this worked a treat - thanks guys.
  22. So i googled about a bit and found the following command to drop into a batch file to copy files about, but it doesn't quite work. xcopy c:\Hornresp\* c:\Hdata\%date:~0,3%\* /Y /Q /S I get the following error (in attachment); Many thanks to anyone who can shed light on why this might not be working for me.
  23. to clarify from my point of view it should be available to the certain staff that need it, but not displayed on registers as many staff have their registers open on their whiteboards - any sort of differentiation will be picked up by students/young people at some point. they are a cleaver old bunch after all.
  24. as a youth worker, i would have to disagree with anything of this sort - it will only lead to alienation of pupils and bring attention to pupils, - even if it was simply a message for the teacher to say that their lunch had been brought in from home and is in reception. all staff should know who has epipens and any medical circumstances that they need to be aware of before they step up and look after children/young people. other young people/children do not need to know who has epipens ect, it is often a sensitive and distressing subject in my experience.
