Anyone running these in their schools or home labs? Might be able to pick a few up on the cheap for a IP based SAN (10g to clients, 40g to storage))-> anything I should be wary of like licensing, not having access to firmware images or not being able to reset them?

how large is your /etc/pihole/pihole-FTL.db file?

So i've just come off a job (I now work in events) where I was running PiHole as our internal DNS, (main and backup in VM's on different hosts) - it wasn't my original plan but we were where we were. We weren't doing Ad filtering - but some local redirects and then forward to upstream. FTL was quite happy with the load (which was in the millions of requests a day) but over 6 weeks, the SQLite db became large, and the PiHole interface (or rather PHP) would run out of RAM processing long term data. I was able to query the db from command line directly, and yeah I did increase the mem lim to 2048 without fix. Host's was an EPYC 32c/64t, 256GB DDR4 RAM, NVME storage with the VM's getting 4 cores, 8 GB RAM and a 50 GB disk. We also saw that the windows DNS was an ordered list, so no client side load ballance.

I'm no longer in education but i have built platforms like this for my professional clients. The biggest cost going forwards is the bandwidth being used. This is a hard one to achieve - almost all modern technologies have ways of being downloaded. There is a constant cat and mouse between apps like YT-downloader and YT, and many forks. If you make the site good enough at the right price point then people wont bother trying to copy them. Agree - HLS based VOD is the way i've done this before. If you have time and know how to code i can point you the right direction for a custom set up.

So your old 4 channel's are UHF, and these will be in the Wi-Fi band, just be aware that that band is heavily used for all sorts, they're certainly not something I would spec on a job, purely for that RF aspect - but as with all things, they may actually be fine in your use case, and if they're stable RFwise, the value for the school will be very good, and hard to beat.

(42u is about 350 flat packed from ebay?) if so i've just put an identical rack in this weekend in a commercial premiss i support. top tips - plan plan plan and leave space for the unplanned. short patch cables - i use 50cm but i interleave switch and patch panels. (switch, cable mgmt, patch, patch, cable mgmt, switch, repeat) don't put things in the bottom 4u - it can make getting cables up a nightmare in the future if it's a 600mm wide rack. always go for a rack that is 600 by 800 or bigger.

Firstly i would assume that it needs to be as secure as pupil data - one new member of staff not knowing that it isn't could be a breach and a disaster waiting to happen. Syncing between sites is an OK idea - but could lead to sync errors and overwrites, 2 staff at 2 sites editing the same document on each server.... Something you could look at (iff you have the internet capacity at both locations) is setting up a desktop in one location to be a server (non domain joined) then add it via a VPN to the other site (or sit it in the DMZ and VPN to both sites) thus both sites would have access to the content and you can back it up ect like a normal server....

If anyone else is thinking along the same lines, but is thinking of using the cpc copies that are 40-60£, the Peli ones really are worth the extra money as the cpc ones are built to the price you pay IMO (i have a few and a few are broken, wheels falling off, handle snapping).

you could also have a fire up script to run from the management pc/network/appliance to trigger fire ups in the right order.

ssh in racadm chassisaction -m chassis nongraceshutdown will kill the chassis. 'help chassisaction' gives you the other options for power commands from the command. (can also be done over serial into the back of the CMC.) if you can script like a boss you can query the power state of each blade also. kill blades by ('-a' is all '-m server-1' for a blade) racadm serveraction -a graceshutdown and 'help serveraction' gives you the rest of the commands, but racadm serveraction -m server-6 powerstatus is the query for a blades power state...... if you want to write a script that does a query then kill, then kill chassis you should be running along swimmingly. btw i have a m1000e with 16 blades if you want me to try the scrip in a non production environment for you. i don't have the storage element like the VRTX but the options are there in the cmc by the looks of it.

If you have an external pc doing the shutdown sequence you can fire a chassis shutdown command to the CMC which should power it all down nicely (after doing each blade). That's how i've heard of m1000e chassis' being done in the past.

Hi all, I'm in need of some rackmoutable fanless switches, that i can get cheaply off eBay. Not to concerned about the port count but need to have a minimum of 4 GB ports, Vlan management and QOS ideally DSCP. I have had a look for older HP's but the 4 GB ports and QOS requirements seem to put me into the fully GB switch or 48 port switch with all seem to have fans Any and all suggestions welcomed. I have literally just done this for a number of PI cards for something. so shrink the original image a bit, make it less than 3 or 7 or 15 GB ect. chuck it into a ubuntu machine, launch disks, create a restore image, restore this image to other Cards. using this method i've just clones 12 SD cards for a project.

I'm not sure it's a form of anything - it's a 'perceptual problem'. It's worth noting that you can have one without the other, and that often Irlens only get's picked up when you're with a professional for some other reasons, which leads to a general perception of a link, that may not actually exist. "Irlen Syndrome is a perceptual processing disorder caused by the brain's inability to process specific wavelengths of light." Dyslexia or Irlen Syndrome? For me personally, i can see a distinct difference between what i see as being a "i struggle to concentrate in certain lighting conditions" (usually sharp black and white's, and sometimes while driving at night on roads with no street lights) and my dyslexia. But it's different for everyone. I developed many coping mechanisms before being diagnosed at uni, such as buying all my uni books second hand, so the paper was grubby and not bright white, not sitting under fluorescent tubes, (quite sensitive to colour temperature when reading), and hi lighting the text as i read on screen (so i read when inverted). For me this is distinct from from my dyslexia, which means i do things like move letters from the end or start of one work to the next when writing sentences, or if i write 'the end' i might miss one of the e's out and things like that, mixing up b's and d's, p's and q's, 3's and 8's, 5's and 6's when hand written... and the general apparent struggle with reading/writing. But it really is all different person to person. I hope this snippet helps, there are many others on the forum who are also dyslexic, and i bet there are also some with Irlens

Yes this is possible. Have you a picture of the cables? Usually the power will be 12/24vDC carried along a 2core cable. You can just hook this up with connector block if you really need to. The Co-ax is more tricky as you should really run it into a BNC or RCA, and then connect the two ends with a coupler or male/female. I would suggest that the holes for the cable should be big enough to poke the cables through without needing to chop the ends off. Pictures would really help here.

I can't say i've encountered this problem before - I usually open 3389 and 3390 up for RDP and it just works (on the gateway/WAN firewall).
