  1. For sprung floors - try a 6mm hardboard with a thin carpet tile on top , 3ft by 6ft isn't unreasonable for someone to lay by themselves (I've done this many times in a university sports hall).
  2. try running GPupdate from command line to force the new policy through, Gpupdate
  3. I would be interested - I'm unsure of my availability but I know I'm not available until the very end of July august. Probably not ideal, but I'm London based with allot of AV experience and RM cc3/4 knowledge and cert.
  4. As an audio engineer who has worked with many children's performances I cannot disagree more; correct choice of microphone and correct placement along with knowing how to use a full parametric EQ on the channel means that you pick up the children's vocals nicely, without feedback and stage noise. Often it is unfeasable to have a choir of 30 all with lapel radio mics... let alone the cost involved and the issues of RF interferance and licensing. Again I cannot agree with this, shotguns correctly places along a stage can do wonders - Becky, an engineer i've worked with afew times is the FOH engineer for STOMP, she does the whole show using shotgun mics!!! Sorry to be negative, but Shotgun mics placed correctly are one of the correct choices for picking up a large or small ensemble. (If correctly placed you will never need to move a mic during a performance/show.)
  5. Urm - if they don't stand within it's pick up zone then it wont work... and you should have as narrow/small as possible pick up zone to avoid background noise and feedback issues. You cannot bend the laws of physics... Tell them to stand still or get a radio mic... anyway - this is what I put on podiums for installs and conference work. C747 V11 | Broadcast Microphones | AKG
  6. Well lower maintenance - yes if you buy decent = more expensive ones, lower power - yeah, less heat - yeah. If you buy cheaper ones such as those from cpc, more than likely you'll find one or two fail (I speak from experience), i've had good experience with some QTX based LED's and chuvet tripar I think. Wireless DMX is usually fine, just be aware of the actual frequency they use as some wifi can interfere with of some them. some have frequency swapping so they move frequency if interference interferes.
  7. What he said - any reason why LED over generic fixtures? DMX is still standard and well suited to schools - artnet is another protocol but more expensive for small installs that don't need it. "school plays, nativity plays, end-of-term speeches" - you'l probably get a very reasonable system installed for 10k (on lighting anyway), "X-Factor style talent contests"... urm, not so sure you'll be able to achieve this. Another thing to think about is who will be servicing the equipment?
  8. Alot of manufactures do this now to help improve there box, but andrew_c is correct. If you mention BOSE to a pro sound engineer or tech they'll usually shake their head in disgust. They have their good products tho, i'm thinking all the 70/100v line syuff and wave cannons in theme parks .
  9. if running ver 3 or 4 (i haven't used 5 personally or on a network) you'll need local app files on each machine and local storage space for all the WAV's that cubase will produce, if you even try running them across a network you'll need network throughput from server to desktop of around 12Mbits per track used in cubase (did I mention you'll need next to no latency across your network too) - you'll need this as cubase uses stored wav's for playback and recording of audio - midi/vst tracks don't do this. When working back in IT, on a cc4 network we ABed a network version with shared storage space vs a network version with localised storage - the network version just couldn't keep up with demand of 4 audio track across a pretty standard 100mbit (to switch then 1G fibre lab to server). (both had issues with storing graphics for wav's due to some RM trickery) The only time i've ever seen cubase working across a network was while I was a student at beths grammer school in bexley - even then, it was only used for editing pre recorded wav's and I think we had a dedicated NAS RAID and all Gbit network for the 4 or 5 of us on the course. (this was 7-8years ago now, when SX3 was the top version kinda) I wish you the best of luck but i think you need to pay more attention to the actual data that will be traversing your network as i would guess the network and that IDE (eeeek) drive will be causing the issue. I think you're simply hitting hardware limits. I also have an idea to help you - why not use local drop space (drive partition) then script a move to server and move back for log off/log on - it'll slow down log off/on times but it's a pretty simple solution (tho it may cause other issues down the line)
  10. Easy now - slipping a physics/mechanics joke in...
  11. Or a weird phase or summing issue in a bad cable possibly.... I've had a bad 3.5 jack to XLR on a (rather large) gig, which summed the L and the R's inverse inside the desk... sounded really funny but it was the only one on site at the time.
  12. that's crazy - 4 seemed a sensible amount last time I was doing a large cable install. (pulling 2 further to allow for socket spacing) May sound really silly but label as you go so you know which cable goes where. - nothing more annoying than a wall plate with 7 and 19 on it because you got the cables mixed up in the bundle.
  13. buy boxes in pairs - if you need 5 boxes - buy 6, running two cables from 2 boxes at the same time is easier and quicker than 2 from one box. Also if the cable doesn't have the meter markers on the side (showing what's left usually) write on the box how much you used so far.
  14. Tell them you use linux and hear them squirm...
  15. Hi there - I'm thinking about buying a WRT54** to play with as a router and I would like to know if anyone has had any experience with either of the two firmwares - which should I go for and is it possible to put my own html files on the device (and push all traffic to them)?
  16. the bose stuff does have controllers for all of their gear in that series, it's mainly a standard set of EQ settings and a crossover for subs/mono sub/other things. You can run them without the controller but you'll miss out 3 key functions, 1 EQ - to make it sound nicer/modify the sound to fit the room (sometimes to remove feedback issues) 2 crossover - to remove the frequencies that shouldn't be going to the 802's (sub 75hz maybe would be bad for the small drivers in the box) 3 limiter - to stop people over driving the speakers and amp with signal that is too hot. if you can get hold of the preset data, a new digital loudspeaker management system would be a great idea to help protect the system into the future. (the folio is a great little series of desk - I have some in my hire stock and they've been going for ages (apart from the power connector that is))
  17. ok - the controller is a generic one - i have two of those in my hire stock - they're not great but they're ideal for smaller stuff. here's a run down of how they can be used (one of many ways) the fixture buttons on the left are 16 channels apart. there's 12 of them so 192 channels on the desk that can be used. the first one starts at channel 1 the next at channel 17 ect. as far as i know you can't change the channels on the desk so you'll have to set your led's to the channels 1, 17 ect. then you select the fixtures 1-12 and the faders control them. the faders are 1-8 and then there is a page select to get to the 9 to 16. It's a bit crap to op a show on. I suspect that you'll be able to do just use the first page tho on the 12 fixtures. you can program scene chases and other things on the desk but i dont really ever use it... Transcension DMX Operator Mk 2 - DMX Master - Djkit.com is another model - and there are others so finding a manual for one shouldn't be too difficult. if the buttons look the same on another then it's probably the same cheap generic desk. as for the led's i think you'll have to work out how to patch thoes onto dmx as others have said - sounds like there in a generic stand alone mode. hope this helps. Matt

Most defiantly - don't be put off tho - they don't hurt that much, more annoying that anything else.
  19. hi there - so DMX is just a signal of numbers sent to the lights, the string of data looks like channel 1 data, channel 2 data ect upto 512. The controller sends out all of this. If two devices use the same addresses they simply listen to that channel data. You can have all of them or non of them set to address 1 and and it will work. With your equipment i would recommend pairing the lights up and using one address for each pair. The LED fixtures will use maybe 3 or 4 channels or addresses of data, so start with channel 1, the next would be channel 4(or 5) ect. Some desks can be patched so that you can control them in different ways so take a picture of your desk and upload it for us all to have a look. It sounds like you have an error in your DMX wiring or a LED can is kicking out DMX aswell so maybe test one fixture then plug in the next ect untill it breaks, then you have found where the break is. There is a device limit per DMX bus of 32 devices including transmitter and the bus should be properly terminated using a terminator (120ohm resistor over pins 2 and 3). The length of all the cables together shouldn't really be longer than say 1000m using the correct cable... usually in practice other cables are used such as cat 6 or audio cable which can degrade the serial signal. The polaraty switch could do that - and wont damage anything if you swap it over. It'll just either work or not work, the working way is the correct way. Would be good to see a pic of the desk in question and to know the model and make of your LED can's to help you some more.

Hi guys - I'm an archer, shoot regularly at my uni club. I used club kit till i got into it and brought my own. My advice would be go to a club and get stuck in.
  23. If you up for an Arduino based solution have a look at something I created/hacked a while back. A simple Arduino DMX controller - you could easily adapt that to suit your needs, what dimmers do you have as some have controllers that would suit your needs also. (eg zero 88 chilli net)
  24. Disk to disk (daily via shadow copy/script) to tape (maybe once a week and stored offsite) #I would have a hardware NAS for the amount you have said (custom build RAID 5 with lots of 1.5/2TB WD Black or enterprise drives) Via a customised script running on each server/the NAS. then to tape using a scripted nt backup maybe, or a third party software. (writing from NAS to tape, so servers dont see the slow tapes.)
  25. I have a batch file that can do this - it doesn't use the date modified bit - but does use the date from the file system, that usefull at all?
