DrCheese Posted June 8, 2015 Posted June 8, 2015 So... With a release date of July 29th, anyone crazy enough to deploy this over the summer? I'm tempted to shove the slow ring build on in one of our IT suites to start testing how it works in production with our systems & iron out any issues, ready for the summer.

SIMS support is a bit of a roadblock. I might stick it on one of the laptop trolleys (not the trolley itself ha ha).
LeMarchand Posted June 8, 2015 Posted June 8, 2015 Nope. Having too many problems with the preview. Oddly, I'd have been pretty happy deploying Win8 at a similar point in the cycle (though didn't because I knew the changes in the UI would cause too many complaints).
tmcd35 Posted June 8, 2015 Posted June 8, 2015 I think device drivers for 7 will start becoming an issue with new hardware (if they haven't already), so I've provisionally slated 10 in for Summer 2016...
synaesthesia Posted June 8, 2015 Posted June 8, 2015 We've started planning and testing, however with Windows 7 working just fine, there's no rush. Planning for a Summer 2016 rollout.

To be fair, you should expect that from the preview.
DrCheese Posted June 8, 2015 Author Posted June 8, 2015 Well - With regards to SIMS I'll leave teacher PCs alone for now. But student PCs should be ok. A big reason for me is our SSD size, most are only 80gb so we have to run cleanup scripts to keep them tidy, Windows 10 frees up another 15gb.
LeMarchand Posted June 8, 2015 Posted June 8, 2015 To be fair, you should expect that from the preview. Yes but, as I implied, I was having far fewer problems with Win7 and Win8 50-odd days before launch. Plus it's a bit worrying how each new build breaks something else, and that UI changes still appear to be on the cards (read something about active programs no longer showing on the taskbar due to popular demand).
X-13 Posted June 8, 2015 Posted June 8, 2015 anyone crazy enough to deploy this over the summer? Oh God, no. I'm not deploying it [providing I have a say in the matter] until it's been out for at least a year/18 months.

But its still no gauge on how good the final product will be in all honesty.
GuyJD Posted June 8, 2015 Posted June 8, 2015 I've been running it for a while in the Staffroom, I've had no complaints about the UI, the ICT Co-ordinator did want me to install it on 5 new PPA computers but after testing I decided that it just wasn't quite there yet because of various bugs and stuck with 7.
Oaktech Posted June 8, 2015 Posted June 8, 2015 Funnily enough the last of my rolling replacement plans for everything we currently own running windows 7 seems to occur the summer before extended support for windows 7 ends... I'll be getting new devices on windows 10 as they come up, and from the release date, every new server I create will be server 10.
LeMarchand Posted June 8, 2015 Posted June 8, 2015 But its still no gauge on how good the final product will be in all honesty. Possibly, but as (presumably) the big boys will be receiving their "final" copies within days rather than weeks I'm far from filled with confidence.
Grey-gear Posted June 8, 2015 Posted June 8, 2015 Probably going to install it on the computer I use but that's about it.
JRowley Posted June 8, 2015 Posted June 8, 2015 2016 for us most likely, I'll update my own machine and perhaps one/two in the staff room for people to try out to give feedback on.
Joanne Posted June 8, 2015 Posted June 8, 2015 I'll make an image for it and perhaps install it on a laptop trolley or two. Only problem is when the staff and children have different screens to look at... it's difficult... y'know when the teach has Office 2010 and the kids are on 2013.... blaaaaaaa!!
Michael Posted June 8, 2015 Posted June 8, 2015 It depends on several things - When Microsoft will release Office 2016 and how good the updated Admin templates are to control Windows 10 from 2008 R2, until they release Server 2016. It does generally make sense to deploy Win 10 and Office 2016 at the same time in my opinion as they'll work hand in hand and probably support the likes of OneDrive for Business better.

Yeah this is another consideration for us, deploying both at the same time seems like the obvious choice.
DrCheese Posted June 8, 2015 Author Posted June 8, 2015 Well - We're on Office 2010 & Adobe CS4 at the moment. I had planned to roll out Office 2013 & Adobe CC this summer on Windows 7, but if I have to reimage the entire school anyway I may just wait and do Windows 10 with both of these on instead. I'd prefer not to have two versions of Office floating around but that may be the way I go & slowly roll 10 out over the year.

I assume we don't have any indication on the release time frame for Office 2016? Thanks
AJWhite1970 Posted June 8, 2015 Posted June 8, 2015 Same as many others in this thread, Windows 7 is rock solid so will use that image for one more year, finish installing SSD's into the remaining PC's (about 20% still to do) and then look at rolling out Windows 10.1 for Summer 2016. Andrew
Michael Posted June 8, 2015 Posted June 8, 2015 I assume we don't have any indication on the release time frame for Office 2016? Thanks Not a sausage I'm afraid, but I am guestimating the end of 2015, but you never know, Microsoft might surprise us and release both at the same time.
FN-GM Posted June 8, 2015 Posted June 8, 2015 They have been quite open about Windows 10, SCCM etc, even Office for Mac. What are they upto? hmmm
Ralph1337 Posted June 8, 2015 Posted June 8, 2015 I wouldn't start deploying Windows 10 until at least SP1. I've given out win 10 to a few staff on some notebooks, they managed to get round fine with it. Navigation is great. But it's still buggy. Sometimes the search freezes, other times it fails to load programs. I even stuck it on a dual boot at home, but there's typically a massive error with SLi and the exact cards i am running windows 10, (not usually found in a work environment) but i'd suggest; if you have windows xp machines(or vista boohissboo). Reimage with windows 10. If not, keep w7 for the meantime. By all means, jump ahead and prep for w10 deployment with images and such. but in my opinion its not ready for an office environment just yet. If they can work Windows 7, they can work windows 10.
Michael Posted June 8, 2015 Posted June 8, 2015 They have been quite open about Windows 10, SCCM etc, even Office for Mac. What are they upto? hmmm On the surface it does look like a re-vamped Office 2010/2013, so I guess for the most part some additional features, more/better cloud integration and maybe more optimising in terms of speed. IE11 on Windows 10 was extremely fast compared to Windows 7 for example.
