Funky battery on the 308 - presume the OP has a similar battery ( image on the below forum link )

That's it! Spot on. Should have thought to take a pic when I was under there last night. :doh:

 

The large rectangular plastic section in the lower left hand corner of the pic is where the main positive terminal is.

Except they don't list a Puegeot 308! And the Peugeot forums show a variety of + terminals, but where is the neg? Is it under that flap on the left?

 

I have owned French cars, and know how weird they can be, but "Ye cannae change the laws of physics"; there MUST be one somewhere!

Nope, that's a plus terminal as well.

 

Now you see my problem. I have scoured the battery under the bonnet and there is not a single trase of a negative terminal that I can see! I even had a read of my manual and it's not clear there either. :(

The negative terminal is under the plastic cover in the bottom left.

No, it's a red plus terminal that's actually the only marked terminal on the battery casing with a giant +! :(

If you look further down that thread you can see a lump of metal coming out from under the LH flap (RH pic of two), going behind the air filter. What's that about if not the neg connection?

 

Strike that; the video finally loaded. What a crock of ..... the French have cooked up. How to make something as simple as a battery far too complex for the layman to deal with! (Jobs for the boys? Yup!)

You may be interested to know the 308 has a VTi engine that was designed and developed in a joint project with those Germans down at BMW! ;)

I'd hate to have to top up the oil, you probably have to pull the engine :-)

 

I have topped up the oil and it was a million times easier!!! ;)

My mrs had a 57 plate vectra, and you had to remove the front bumper just to change a friggin headlight bulb!?!

I had a 1998 Vectra ( whatever obscure plate number that is ) and you could change them easy enough, there was a moveable relay box you had to slide out of the way though.

My 05 Megane is exactly the same - indeed any of the front bulbs.

 

It is really easy when you know how though, possibly easier than skinned knuckles and strange contortions of your hands and arms to reach through the gap on a 'normal' car.

 

This sort of thing is all part of the charm of French electrics though - much like why my passenger side front window is disconnected (it opens itself when it feels like it and then wont shut!).

We had an 05 "migraine" too..... what a nightmare. Timing belt replacement.... drop the block. Water pump replacement, you guessed it..... drop the block!!

Wasn't sad to see the back of it. I wouldn't buy another Renault. In fact probably any continental european car for that matter...... Not that that's even an option now.

My MK4 Golf GTI was just like that unless you had small hands and double jointed alas I wasn't so it was off with the bumper and I changed all the bulbs at the same time!

 

That Halfords link about jump starting is interesting, I have a Halfords Car Emergency kit including jump leads and it says red to red black to black yet there website is saying no now.....

And did you know that in three of the cars this lump is in - the 307, 407 and Focus - all three have different recommended service intervals. The 407 is the one with the longest interval, and that's the one which suffers most from turbo failures due to oil starvation because of a gummed up filter in the turbo oil feed pipe. Co-incidence?
