elsiegee40 Posted January 17, 2013 Posted January 17, 2013 My school still has some old XP kit, but as XP doesn't go out of support until next year that isn't a problem. All the kit is being replaced on rotation and the last few XP boxes will be replaced by the end of the summer. So the answer to your 'Why?' Is... Because it was too expensive to do it all in one go. Machines are replaced on rotarion.
localzuk Posted January 17, 2013 Posted January 17, 2013 Yep, still XP here. Windows 7 migration is planned for summer this year. There's been no reason to upgrade until now (due to SIMS as you say). We've got one suite left that simply wouldn't be able to cope with it though. So, gotta sort that out first.

TechSupp Posted January 17, 2013 Posted January 17, 2013 Still on XP at one of my primaries and it's as usual down to cost. This summer we should be doing a total change to W7 and Office 2010. Wanted to change all rather than bit by bit so waited a bit longer to change over. It always seems toncause staff problems if theybhave to deal with two different OS which we had when going from 98 to XP which was done bit by bit. Office is a mix of XP and W7 but LA deal with all that.
jamesfed Posted January 17, 2013 Posted January 17, 2013 Just had a meeting with a Primary we do work for today and they still have 16 notebooks and about 10 desktops on XP - fully in support of binning them all (or replacing) before end of life. Having to do massive thin client roll outs at the secondary I work for though to keep the same number of PCs and keep up with Win 7.

free780 Posted January 18, 2013 Posted January 18, 2013 I think we'll have a little party when xp is totally gone. Win7 now out numbers xp and vista for us. Its a gradual upgrade for staff. Students were done last summer.
maestromasada Posted January 18, 2013 Posted January 18, 2013 60% of 580 computers still on XP, I'm holding the upgrade till last minute to force Finance to buy better PCs fully compatible with W7, by 'fully compatible' I mean lovely 120GB SSD + 3GB ram, see if this order happens! If not, will renew the M$ license to cover the upgrade and will boost W7 on 1GB ram 80GB IDE hard drive, see how amazingly fast everything runs...

synaesthesia Posted January 18, 2013 Posted January 18, 2013 Fully 7 at my main site (Secondary) but 2 of my primaries are still mostly or entirely XP. Plans to move them forward to 7/8 are already booked in for the coming half term; XP support may be held off until next year however that's not quite the case for a rather important software package we know as SIMS. No reason to be holding on to XP now IMO - 7 runs better on anything built in the last 4/5 years and some of the features are invaluable.

Most student pcs Win 7 at the other site - just a few XP scattered around here and there.No plans to upgrade as yet, as no money. Fewer staff still on XP. Planning to get rid this year. (of XP, not the staff....but then again.....)

I am currently testing it and it works well. Yea, we are still running 7 mostly and only have a few staff on 8 but they like it so far. I think the title should be WHY instead of Why ;-)

Iain.Faulkner Posted January 18, 2013 Posted January 18, 2013 With the exception of a handful of machines (which are windows 7) we are XP across the school (approx 850 PC's). We're looking at switching to Windows 7 in the summer, but by my reckoning we've got 160 PC's which will not cope with it.....not sure where the money is coming from to replace those, so I think we'll be mixed for a fair while. We're also a Server 2003 school as well, but plans are in place to completely replace the server infrastructure this summer, this is being made the priority ahead of the PC's at this point.

As far as I know SIMS will not be supported on XP from the Autumn upgrade (November time?). If anyone knows different please let me know. Everyone here is still happy with XP only gripe is that IE8 is now not working with some sites and causes problems.

We're planning for this summer, as it is quite a big job, as we've been told we cannot have 7 and XP running on the network/domain by our support company.
Earthling Posted January 18, 2013 Posted January 18, 2013 I've finally had enough of waiting for the Senior Tech to give the Windows 7 'Go', so I'm rolling it out myself at half-term. Replacing the machines in one of our main IT rooms at half-term and at the same time, I'll re-image the other IT room with 7. It just seems stupid to keep on buying new pc's with 4+Gig ram and then install 32-bit XP on them and I can't do it anymore. All the new staff laptops have 7 on them and a couple of admin pc's. I plan on 'doing' the rest of them after half term but before July. I've had policies and images ready for 7 for about two years now. But you can shove Windows 8 right back where you got it from, pointless on a pc. Still running a 2003 domain, though
