If it's the XServe 2006 version, I believe the actual issue holding you back is the fact it is a 64 bit CPU however uses a 32 bit EFI/Firmware. There are bootloaders out there, however, that can change the original 32 bit EFI to 64 bit (here's one example), allowing you to use Yosemite Thanks!

Try a PRAM Reset: OS X Mavericks: Reset your computer’s PRAM - see how that goes, should sort out the fan issues. There is a terminal command to create a bootable USB from downloading the Install OS X Yosemite.app from the Mac App Store (Creating a bootable OS X installer in OS X Mavericks). Although these instructions are for Mavericks, should apply to Yosemite as well. Tom

Could you try making an external USB drive with the Yosemite installer and try to install it that way? Installing the OS on top of an existing installation just rewrites the system files, and leaves your data safe. Let us know how it goes, Tom

What qualifications have you currently got? If you're watching networking, switching and VLANs don't really come in until CCNA 3, however CCNA or Network+ are the ones I hear about the most when it comes to networking, if you're wanting a qualification out of it.
