Hi all,

 

I don't usually post in these welcome threads but apparently I need at least 1 post to post URLs which I was attempting to do in another thread!

 

For what it's worth I'm an IT Tech for an SEN Primary in the North West. I've been in the job for 12 months and have big plans for my school.

 

I've been lurking on this site for a few months and have found it quite informative. It's interesting to hear about the trials and tribulations of other people with similar jobs! I've also found the BSF stuff a particularly interesting read.

 

You'll have to excuse my naff username; it's nothing cryptic. I always draw a blank when prompted for one. :rolleyes:

 

I'm currently getting stuck into moodle at the moment having never used it before so I may be asking the odd question about that. It seems quite good although not very intuitive in certain places in my opinion.

 

Anyway I'll wrap up now, cya around. ;)

Hi all, thought it's only fair I let on who I am.

 

I'm Alex, Network Manager with 1 understudy technician at a large(? is 800 kids large?) secondary school in Leicestershire. I spend my days working towards ideals when I'm not refilling toner cartridges or explaining that your wireless has stopped working because that switch on the front of your laptop is set to "Off".

 

Been in IT jobs since 1999 in a highstreet computer shop, then a telecoms firm doing VoIP (fun but demanding), then a bank doing hard-boiled (name clue) web support, then in their network team then here at the school.

 

On a personal slant, I have a caravan (yes, at 26), two cats, a beautiful fiancée and an immune system made of sticky back plastic and empty washing up liquid bottles. Being around 800 snotty kids all day was perhaps not the best career move to make!

 

All but 1 or 2 of the staff see eye-to-eye with us in IT and we try hard to make each others' lives easier. Some people just don't get it though and for them, I just take a deep breath and try not to stab anyone in the face with a plastic fork. At the end of the day we're all trying to do a job but "please" and "thankyou" are free and go a long way.

 

I'm not a Vista fan and I heart my WiSpy dongle (google it, they are ace). I drink more tea than average but feel each cup brings me closer to restoring my super powers. I cannot fly.

 

Like everyone in IT knows, I often suffer the problem that if you do your job properly, people find it hard to tell you're doing anything at all.

 

Err and erm... I don't own a TV.

Hello EduGeek,

 

I found this place through my "buddy" (and by that, I mean person-I-bug-when-my-code-doesn't-work) bizzel, and after seeing the sort of things that go on here I felt I'd be slightly useful, and that my project (which isnt finished at all) would be good here.

 

I'm a student who recently started at the Sixth Form of my school, and I'm not a cracker, nor am I someone who enjoys breaking into stuff. I simply write code. I am also quite friendly with the ICT department of my school, both the technical and the teaching departments. I took Chemistry, ICT and Maths for my three AS courses, and I'm having to retake english - this time I will do my coursework.

 

As for the coding aspect, I have (some) skill in C# and VB.net, but I wouldn't say I'm an expert coder, no way. I've messed around with the Facebook API in VB.net for a completely unrelated thing, and this time I'm learning and using C#.

 

And on a final note... I'm not your 'normal' student.

I'm Stuart

 

I am a Network Manager for a secondary school in East Sussex. 1050 students, 460 ish workstations running Server 2003 and Windows XP.

 

Staffing is an issue at the moment with us. Lots of managers but not a techie in sight (well ok maybe 1).

 

Would be interested in knowing what the staffing is like in other secondary schools of the same sort of size.

Been a bit of a lurker here for a while (and an interested reader)...thought I'd better introduce myself & try to contribute a bit more.

 

I work at a company called Novotronix & we specialise in developing solutions based on Sharepoint (now have been involved in over 250 Sharepoint projects) & associated technology such as Infopath, SQL Server and Reporting Services.

 

Over the last couple of years we are getting more demand in the world of education and have therefore developed solutions for MIS integration / parental access, staff Intranets, Learning environments, Sharepoint themes geared up for pupils to access etc.

I'm currently System Manager at a North Devon School (West Buckland School) but I retire at the end of this year.

I joined this forum as a way of advertising the post to the largest possible number of people and will post this message in the job section later.
