Aero on here. Baseline computers have 2GB of RAM and a "modern" processor. I used to have Windows classic throughout on XP and Vista but I personally feel enforcing the classic theme on Windows 7 is shooting yourself in the foot somewhat from the usability side of things. The computers are more than capable and it is time to move on. Plus, when you're making such big changes to the network, anything that is considered "ooh, shiny" helps!

I have one of those ML115s and they are very good for the price. If you can stretch to some extra RAM I would recommend it as 2008 R2 is a tiny bit sluggish on 1GB. Don't get me wrong it works, but another 1GB stick would work a treat. The only other niggle I have is a can't seem to find a working display driver for 2008 R2, which doesn't really matter anyway. Other than that it's solid.

My experience with Macs and wireless has been the complete opposite of "just works". I bought the first generation Core Duo iMac which turned out to have a terrible driver problem that was quite widespread at the time and crippled peoples connection speeds. Luckily a software update from Apple a few weeks later fixed it. Since then I've had a white MacBook and the new MacBook Pro and both have thrown an occasional (and more annoyingly, unexplained) hissy fit with their wireless connections. I've seen the same issue with friends MacBooks as well. I must forgive them though as I keep buying the things!

Never had a problem with Windows Firewall, client or server. It tends to be the third party firewalls that are a bit overzealous. Definitely enabled.

The copyright warnings I get - fair enough - but unskippable trailers and adverts on something you've paid (a lot) for the privilege to watch just takes the proverbial. It annoys me just as much in the cinema (trailers not so much, but definitely adverts)

Wow, full admin rights on client machines for staff and pupils? *shudder* I work in a Primary/Nursery and ALL of our user accounts, including my own day-to-day account, are standard user accounts. My philosophy is to keep things as simple as possible. With Group Policy I redirect the Desktop and My Documents to the NAS, run a couple of login scripts to map network drives and printers and configure little things like the IE homepage and favourites. This works well for us - it keeps computers across the network consistent, doesn't allow individuals to trash the configuration and keeps malware to a minimum.

I had a similar Q&A on my interview, and in my opinion I think as long as you can justify your answer you can't go far wrong. For example even though education taking priority is perhaps the answer they may be looking for, you could say that a 60 second call to the head to tell him or her to select a different printer and keep the lesson waiting a few minutes may be the most efficient way to prioritize rather than hold up the head (who may need this document urgently) as you suspect you could be in class for quite a while. I said something very similar in my interview and I got the job so I can't have been far wrong! Just give them a sensible, well-reasoned answer and you should be fine.

When I first read this I thought maybe clippy was making a comeback. It looks good though, I'm piloting (from a technical POV) Office 2010 at the moment so this could be something I build some staff training around if and when it gets deployed en masse.

I second the driver thing - try an updated one or even an alternative one. I had the same problem but fortunately for me I don't need to centrally manage the printers so the clients print direct now. It tied up so much time and got to the point where I had a scheduled batch file running to reset the print spooler service every 15 minutes.

Can't see any real clangers, although do they need a Quad? Also, what about an operating system?

Voted no. Reasons: Can't be bothered breaking it every time there is a new software update. Not keen on installing software from untrusted sources on my phone.

Same with the virus. Biological virus plural = virii, computer virus plural = viruses.

I'd take rain over snow any day! As much as I like snow having to drive to work on icy roads is just horrible.

I didn't think it was too bad and it got a bunch of people into the store. Plus the employees were being paid to prance around so everyone wins. Except maybe the people already in the store - I'd find it a tad annoying if a dance broke out in the middle of me trying to buy something.

Our email server must be based on one of the earliest Celeron chips (1998/1999?) running Windows NT and mail server software nobody seems to have heard of. Good job we only have a handful of users on it. I'm actually scared to reboot in case it doesn't come back on! I can't wait to retire it. To be fair though, out of all the servers it probably gives me the least amount of trouble!

I agree with the above. As a policy document it is fine but I think it would definitely be complimented with a poster highlighting the main points. Also agree with bumping the more important (imo) points onto page 1.

I put 4 disks straight into a NAS once and then noticed the guiding rails you were suppose to affix to the hard drives first. What a chump I had to extract the disks with a pair of pliers - I'm pretty sure I held my breath the entire time!
