We are working with a number of schools to provide a Sharepoint Learning Platform with links back to CMIS (for reporting and parental access etc.) Any advice I have seen (e.g. from Becta) suggests that parents don't need to have 2 factor authentication. The only time this should be required is for teachers who have remote access to multiple pupil records. I can imagine that trying to provide this to parents would not just have a cost in terms of providing the fobs but would also be a huge admin overhead (e.g. lost/replacement fobs, technical assistance on how to use and issues with synchronisation etc.) Are you sure that the LA are mandating this for parental access? Is it that you can't see the MySite link externally at all or is it that when you click on the MySite link it generates an error? I've also recently been looking into this. It has now been conformed by Ray Fleming at Microsoft that the Internet Connector license is apparently not required for schools public facing websites. Domain admin doesn’t necessarily mean sql admin – especially on 2008. Check roles assigned in Sql Server management studio > Security > Logins Otherwise its a bit difficult to say without seeing your setup in a bit more detail. Was the existing 2007 install fully patched?

Alternatively if the documents in the file system are more for historical reference then you can just index the content on the file system so that it appears within Sharepoint search etc. (without then having to clog up Sharepoint with lots of unused content)

Do you currently have Sharepoint in place? If you do - one of the schools we are working with have setup a simple purchase ordering solution using a Sharepoint (list + workflow), which we could replicate...

Just to confirm that you don't just need to stick with SQL Express. If you select the advanced install when you first install WSS you get the choice of internal SQL Express (which is actually unlimited in storage capacity) or a seperate SQL instance (which can be Express or full blow SQL Server). The 2 .net based CMS systems that I would recommend would either be: Dot Net Nuke or possibly SharePoint, depending on requirements & licensing. Either would allow you to delegate responsibilities to other members of staff whilst allowing you to maintain overall control of branding & site management. Steve
