I'm a lot younger than most people in my position - I just got lucky and impressed the right people at the right time.

 

Join the club, same here D I'm 18....

 

Just realised it's my birthday next month - where's the last 12 months gone to!?! ? 8O

I know time does really fly, 3 month till mine, then I am 20! and then I will have completed 2 years full service for the place I work.

As the saying goes, time flys when your having fun

worked out recently next april 5 years working for lea working from as youth worker/net man, then it tech for primary school to net man for high school....

 

but get extra weeks hol which is good

Time for the older ones to own up. I'm Dave and a network manager (sort of) in Lancashire. Vary rarely post because I feel very inadequate in my knowledge compared to your regular contributors.

 

Started at my present school in 1980 as a Physics teacher. Since I had a little programming background I was offered the post of Head of Computing in 1984 – a trifle grand since I was the only computing teacher. Over the years set up and maintained several different networks; RM 480Z, RM Nimbus, Novell and Windows NT. Gradually the “Geeks” took over but I am still around to look after the Admin side and to keep the Geeks and the teachers apart. Actually our geeks seem to be hiding away from saying who they are although many of you will know “Linux Geoff” and “Silent Bob”. Also hiding in the wings are Richard and “young” Dave.

 

They say that confession is good for the soul so here goes. I taught “Linux Geoff” and gave him his first Linux CD and machine to play on. Also my daughter went to school with Ric Charlton. I now feel very old and it is time for my afternoon nap………

Surprised to see the number of younglings going straight into the world of work.

 

Whatever happened to the time honoured rite of three years spent slacking at the tax payers expense. Oh yeah tuition fees :Cry:

 

I know that many people complain about the relavance of what is taught on many uni comp sci courses but there is something to be said for the broader context they give.

i have arguments for and against uni courses

 

as was said to at queue at bett...

 

"The mature students always had work in on time and had no problems with"...

 

to be honest i think lot people are not mature enough to handle uni when they leave school.....

 

one reasons they should be more ways for mature students to be able to do uni course later on in life.....

At the end of the three years, where would the real-life hands-on work experience (that a lot of employers want) come from? If, at 16, I did the 2 years A level and follow the uni route, I'd be at Uni now. In a few years time I believe it would be incredibly difficult to find a job that I wanted. As I came straight into work, I can kill two birds with one stone. Work experience, plus part-time courses, certification, training etc. Works for me :D

And of course the joys of student loans!

 

Thanks to an earlier aborted course I did, by the time I finish my course - in June, Yay!! :D - I shall owe his Tonyness and friends (a.k.a Student Loans Company) nearly 20k!!

 

That's gonna take a while to clear on an entry-level tech's wages :(

Hi I have just recently fond this website and I am so glad tha there is a place for all of us ICT people.

 

I work in Plymouth, and find the job very demanding with not much thanks for my effort, although I do enjoy it.

 

Well I hope I can share some of my experiences and maybe help someone else in the process.

I'm a Systems Technician at the Grange School in Dorset.

 

Well, i revently found this website from a link on the SWGfl portal.

So, over the last couple of weeks, Its great tp find people who can simpathise with the situations of everyday support staff/ict life.

 

As a bit of a back story, I used to go to this school, did sixth form here, ended up with a computing A level, and was offered a job.

Hello. I'm Linda , Web Manager/VLE co-ordinator for Dorset LA ( there's only me doing this job, so I'll be known to most Dorset schools on here).

 

I'm not really a techie, done some first line user support, lots of database management, Capita's EMS (like SIMS but for LAs) and now into the world of Elearning.

 

ITWitch introduced me to Edugeek and I have been lurking for ages, particularly interested to read about other schools' and LAs' experiences with VLEs/Moodle.

 

This LA, along with the rest of the South West Grid, has had the Ramesys VLE Assimilate (known to us as the SWGfL Portal) available to schools for 2 years, but with the arrival of the BECTA inter-operability standards and DfES plans for Learning platforms, it's going to be an interesting few years!

 

I've been "advertising" Edugeek on our home page of the SWGfL Portal as I think it is a great resource. That's how ChrisC found you (Hi, Chris!).

 

Do I get a discount for recruiting? :-)

Hi I am Lauren

 

I am and Techie for a primary school in bournemouth. Started off with just supporting the staff 4 years ago now am quiet capiable of putting my hand to anything. Which is not always a good thing. We have IWB in all 14 of our classrooms which are run with various projectors and all teachers are using laptops.

 

Our current IT suite (16 pc's most 98 I know it's bad) hopefully will be replaced in the summer Yipee. Our classroom network has 24 machines all XP. Thats enough about my school.

 

So glad to have found a forum dedicated to crazy technical people. I would like to know how many primary schools especially in the Bournemouth LEA have actually got Technicans on site and what kind of hours they do.

Hi everyone. I’m Pam – teacher for 30 yrs. Have taught from Reception to A-levels, but managed to miss out on Yrs 4,5+6!

I work at a First School in Middx. A .8 classteacher, Yr group leader, ICT co-ordinator + Network Administrator, SMT.

 

In my spare time, I ............sleep. Occasionally, I use my craft interests to make hand made cards. I have sold a few, but as of yet not enough coffers in the retirement fund to leave.
