CC4, still a no-go area?
Chafftech replied to magicpatch's topic in Network and Classroom Management
If you are LEA supported they should be able to install a new CC3 server. RM are still selling CC3 preconfigured servers on their website once this is in place all software migrated and all workstation built to the new domain you are done. This is preferable to CC4 at the moment, trust me on this one. You can always upgrade to CC4 in couple of years time. -
I have found that I did not have the proxy setup in server configuration, which was recommended by the installation guide. Thanks for the tips on SQL I will look into which sp I have on this.

We are having this problem now, did you ever resolve this?
-
That is more than enough. We have 90 concurrent connections on ws 2003, 2GB Ram, 3 x 146GB 15k rpm (RAID 5) 1 x 1000T NIC. And it is pretty quick, so your spec will be very fast as long as the workstations can request the data fast enough.

soory mate thats life in education. The problem is the Teachers should not be managers but thats what 95% of any SMT/SLT in schools are. Its not about to change either.

EduGeek, netiquett and legal consequences
Chafftech replied to Dos_Box's topic in General EduGeek News/Announcements
I am a parsnip. I am going to sue for breach of vegatable rights because you did not back it up with evidence. -
I did look at these but I have concerns: Is anyone worried that they are breakable by students swinging on them? Fixing costs what happend if the projectors duff how do you swap it out? How do you replace lamp? Please share with me your thoughts if you have one of these because I am actually quite interested in these

I respect your opinions a lot, but please be aware this is effectively to me a new bug that has not been experienced before - that is not good enough for a software in its fourth official pilot. I have alway been supportive of the concept of this software (this is my third pilot) but it is so over complicated and has so many problems this software really is not worth it.

We are in the process of finishing up the tests today. I found out that last night we are going to lose the results of 17 pupils through no fault of our own. Everyone please be aware that session1 can fataly not save its data properly not allow the pupil to start session2 and it cannot be solved. I cannot believe this is happening as last year I managed to get every pupil a result. And to think they were going to roll this out next year as the replacement to SATS - what would have happened if no result came back for say 10% of pupils? I am very angry with this software and will drop it no matter what, it is not technically feasible to put so much effort in and get so little back.

Agree with that mate - if you look at what we do, It's probably one of the most important jobs in the school. I am not allowed to be SMT even though I believe I should be - I make whole school decisions every day of the week that affect 100 teachers and 1000 pupils but there is no real reward. I am not allowed to control the ICT budget as a whole because I am not SMT - and yet I am by far the most qualified person to hold it. Money has been wasted over the years because of this - and I have to go crawling to SMT to get my order for 50 network cables signed. Dont get me wrong - I have a very good working relationship with SMT - and I've driven things forward considerably since I have been here. But I dont feel valued. As for the Govenors question - in the 6 years I have been here I have not once had a meeting with any of the govenors. I have no idea what they do here to be honest. They probably have no idea what I do either! Andrew Are we working at the same school? Exactly the same for me here.

I have already implemented a moodle VLE at my current site, I have to admit it would be nice to get it off the current server as it is installed on windows 2000 member server that needs decomissioning really. The ICT department like it and I believe it has helped with tracking of coursework / homework quite effectively. Not mention cut down on some of waste caused by excessive print outs. Not everything in moodle is straight forward though, eg linking up to AD took me 2 days.
-
Where are you based? I am based in havering we had all the sales pitch - I have to say the product looks good and I know of schools that really rate it as single school VLE solution. Having said that I agree more details are needed as this is a big project; an London wide sims integrated solution that allows students to move seamlessly from school to school and even LEA to LEA; and one that is going to be a bumpy ride at times I imagine.

I have LDAP working on my WAMP server 1.6.3 setup on a windows 2000 member server. It has been working since sept 2006 - maybe I can help can you tell me the exact problem your having?

We have a vacancy - think it might already be on edugeek job listing under jobs go public here is link anyway http://poweredby.jobsgopublic.com/havering/index.cfm?fuseaction=Job.Display&StartRow=1&keywords=IT&SearchType=SearchQuick&btnSubmit=1&job_id=2264093&source=s¤tJobRow=7 S01 - S02 (approx 25 - 28k) so good money. PM me for more details. Would be nice to have some good quality candidates as putting it out to the local rags does not guarantee such, hence I am calling on all edugeekers.

19 institution Moodle site on Win2003!
Chafftech replied to MkII's topic in Virtual Learning Platforms
We have moodle running on a w2k sp4 server using WAMP server. I dont consider myself clueless about any aspect of ICT. w2k was already on server and it was very quick and easy to install moodle within 3hours including setting up ldap authentication for logins. Performance is fine on it, and I have even performed upgrade from 1.6 to 1.7. It has been fully live since October. -
Not really.. because if you do not have the ADMIN rights to CC3 you can do nothing and everything is locked down as CC3 Why spend thousands and thousands of pounds to use CC3 but then use GPO's.. ?!?! you won't because CC3 will control your Network As I said CC3 controls your network where as Ranger is a "Front End" and not as smothering... As said above.. all you are with CC3 is a Technician.. CC3 does everything for you you learn and do nothing.. just babysit CC3..... Bet you use WebMail as well Sorry that you feel that way... But RM is on of the most despised ICT Companies in the UK... They take all the Skill and Professionalism out of being a Network Manger. I am a CCNP, MCSA and MCSE certified and can run, configure, expand my skill set and maintain a Network.. but with CC3 all I can do is Molly Coddle.... But maybe CC3 is a good thing as it seems 80% of the Schools will be CC3 with the BSF rollout... Sorry mate, you need to sort yourself out. Just because YOU dont like does not mean others can not like it. So stop screaming abuse at people just because you want to stop the whole world from using RM. Basically grow up. BTW dropping in your qualification means jack. Lots of people have just as many letters after their name and dont feel the need to boast. Some of them also use CC3. If you cannot stick to the topic then I think you should be removed from this forum. @Witch Which front end you choose comes down price and usability - what type of school are you in? If you are in primary I am not 100% with CC3 in that environment.

Very funny had me laughing, and I would say that is true of my school as well but then thought that with multiple choice the teachers can coach the kids to pass an exam without actually knowing the answers!
-
Been there mate. I have worked at 2 previous schools who virtually said same thing when linemanagers in SMT would not fight my cause for pay rise or listen to my suggestions. So both times I moved on only to be met with derision for leaving the post for better pay (and hopefully conditions) - "traitor" one Asst. HT called me!!! Some were unhappy that I left and actually question why the SMT didnt just give me what I wanted. It can be hard to find another job, but keep looking and let them know that your looking if they ask, but only because of x or y. But do not say you hate it here etc.

People are missing the point....It does not make any difference that RM get a PFI contract for a school / LEA ICT solution. The problem IS BSF, and PFI contracts being given out to anyone, especially as they are private companies out to make a profit. The only way they can make a profit is to spend less than they recieve from govt and that could mean cuts to staff pay or sharing staff over multiple schools dropping the quality of service. The fact that RM have been in education for a while and have already managed whole schools and provided a solution in Northern Ireland puts them at the forefront so yes they are likely to get contracts and to be honest it is probably better than a lot of companies whose intention when getting these PFI contracts is to squeeze the assets as hard as possible and then sell the contract on.

Ok I have worked it out: I needed to select all pupils and set their year group to inactive. This takes them off of the DPS logon screen. @russedev I haven't actually imported this years year 9 yet I am hoping that they will enter the ILAs into sims and I can export it into APS. Thanks anyway as you gave me the inspiration for above solution.
-
Maybe I haven't read the documentation properly but all the old pupils from last year I have promoted to year 10 but their names are still on the logon list that appears on DPS logon screen. What is everyone doing about this because when this years year 9 go on the system I will have all last years year9 names come up as well confusing the hell out of some people. The only solution I have found is to delete them - but I dont want to do that as I want to keep each years results.

A bit harsh didnt think they blow people up these days for committing offences!!

@pete We are looking at getting PE to register wireless. How does SIM.net install onto a PDA? Is there is special client?
