(Linux) Geoff will probably add something tomorrow but.... Linux Geoff does all of the backups, upgrades. If I see an interesting block or module then that is tested on a local test installation. One of our other technicians (Young Dave) plays around with the themes. I'm afraid that I'm the eLearning person and arrange training to individuals/departments. The advantage of local hosting is speed and flexibility but you do throw all of your eggs into one basket. CLEO does a very good job at supporting schools in Cumbria and Lancashire but I'm afraid that I'm very impatient. If I see a new idea I want it immediately.

Try Xerte. It is now open source and it reminds me of the support that first attracted me to Moodle.

Daughter number one works in a Cardiff primary school and they have a Moodle. I presume that it has been set up by the local authority. I will try to find out but it normally it costs me money when I phone up

Supposedly it is Lancashires DNS that is screwed. We expect students to access these sites anytime, anywhere so the support should be 24/7.

Many errors here. Part of the process is to reload some of the information from the last census. There were even errors in this - but this had never been picked up. Does anyone ever look at the data? Capita eventually decided a patch was needed for our problems but they sent the wrong one. At the second attempt "most" of the problems disappeared. I just feel that I have wasted an awful lot of time and this must be multiplied hundreds of times around the country.

Strictly speaking the praise ought to go to Dan Poltawski for developing the software, Lancashire University Network Services (his employers) and then CLEO for putting on the pressure to release the software. But you are right about local government/agencies. Trying to get them to work together is almost as difficult as getting teachers to work together

Found this on Tom's Hardware. Shuttle have released (at least in the colonies) a 99$ PC. Would need an upgrade to make it run Windows XP but it would seem to make a very impressive thin/linux client.

As long as you have rights to both courses go to the administration block in course A and import from course B.

There are a number of "free" courses on the CLEO site. You would need to register and I am not sure what they would think about someone outside Cumbria and Lancashire using their courses - but you could try. As far as e-subjects is concerned the owner, Dagza, does wander around these forums. Perhaps a PM to him might help. On a similar theme. Dagza come back to Moodle - you know you want to!

Why not install one of the XAMPP Windows packages? 15 minutes and everything is up and running. I have it running on my laptop to investigate new features without having to compromise a live system.

Much as I hate to disagree with DB (and being a staunch Moodle advocate myself), Moodle isn't authorized in the strictest sense of the word. Becta set out various conditions and, because Moodle is open source, no-one was there to fight it's case. As far as the learning platform specification is concerned Moodle can do all, and more, than those who jumped through the hoops. Becta have privately accepted this. It is also the reason why CLEO and numerous other broadband consortia have moved over to Moodle. If you understand Moodle and are happy with it then stick with it. In the end all of the learning platforms should do the same job. Would you trust some of the organizations that have been authorized>

The good thing about it is that it easy for the average teacher to use and that you can import the quizzes directly into Moodle. Highly recommended.

@SimpleSi I see that you have found the chameleon theme - but I can't seem to change any of the CSS. No shift/click. Do you have the same problem? Perhaps Dan P can tell us if CLEO have set $THEME->chameleonenabled = false; in config.php. I have checked that Ajax is enabled globally (and in my profile) so I am running out of ideas. No difference in IE7 and Firefox.

There are several issues throughout this thread and some of them need clarifying. a) there is a problem with defining roles. These came in with 1.7 and many Moodle users stopped upgrading from 1.6 because of that. However they are very powerful in the way you can over-ride the roles. For instance we have teaching staff who obviously teachers in their own course but students if they just want to "observe". I over-ride the normal student role in some of the forums so they can "rate" a comment. b) the "look" of Moodle can be off-putting. Much of this is due to the fact that it is not a conventional web-site and so you cannot just put your information anywhere. There are fantastic themes available if you look. For example here or here. On both of these sites you can flick between the different themes. c) CLEO try to take away much of the grief associated with learning Moodle - which is why they put on free courses. They also tie the schools down so that they don't install blocks that might cause compatibility problems. This is fine for most schools but, I suppose, we like to live on the edge. It does cause problems. For instance one of the blocks we added trashed our 1.8 theme. It means you have to start again. The important thing is that Moodle (or something like it) does change the way that teachers teach and students learn. Persevere - it is worth it. @SimpleSi If you want to wander into Carr Hill sometime we can show you what we do. When I say "we" I really mean Geoff and the others - I just tell them what to do. Sometimes they listen. I also suggest you change your theme to Chameleon and have a play. When you are happy pass the changes back to CLEO to add to your site themes.

Ask away - everything seems to be working correctly. The first thing that I would do is kill the purple colour! As long as you are happy with HTML the labels can contain almost anything and they do make the site less boring. With Moodle 1.9 you will be able to use rounded boxes which, again, make the site more interesting. Not sure when CLEO are moving to 1.9 though. If it makes everyone feel better the Carr Hill site is down this morning. I don't think it is the reverse proxy since the email is working. Perhaps Geoff has been playing.

@secretlife Front page description isn't needed to get the labels working. @SecretSi If you want to pm me with some login details I could have a browse around and see how CLEO set up their Moodles. From a memory from a distant discussion I think the login page is forced - so basically it should be be pure HTML with the login block. I am sure someone will correct me if I am wrong. BTW I know that replying to this on Christmas morning is a little sad but I am waiting for the oven to warm up before putting in the turkey. Excuse over.
