strawberry Posted June 22, 2007 Posted June 22, 2007 i'm fed up of kids telling me that the network isn't quick enough!. it would be a hell of a lot quicker if the kids werne't allowed to use youtube all day. we also have problems with kids breaking the headphones ( i cant imagine it comes during lessons when they record soundbites twice a year) and with overcrowding in our suites leading to kids complaining they cant do any work. RAAGGEEE!! anyone else have a policy on you tube and similar sites?

As for leaving in headphones its easier that way as i dont have the time to plug them in each time a teacher wants 5 seconds of sound for there class.

For example science often show more potent reactions from youtube, for experiments that can't be carried out in school. With headphones we have 2 boxes with 30 headphones in - 1 box each between 2 of our 4 ICT suites. The teachers are responsible for doling them out and back in when they need them. If they are broken then it comes out of the ICT Department budget (not any of mine!)

plock Posted June 22, 2007 Posted June 22, 2007 We have sites such as YouTube.com/Bebo.com/Myspace.com etc on our BanList. Staffs have access and use the sites for teaching materials. Headphones are stored in the classrooms and locked away in cupboards. Generally they're given out on a needs basis.

Funnily enough - a teacher got a cob on with me today because I wouldn't unblock it so her class could "have some fun at the end of the lesson", sent her away with a flea in her ear. We have boxes of headphones in the office, a teacher is welcome to borrow them for a class, if they're broken when they come back, then the cost comes out of their departments budget. Interesting how much more care is taken when it's THEIR money, not the IT Departments...

If you need a perfect reason to convince SLT that youtube should be banned just type in "porn" infront of them, or even better "young girls" or something along them lines. Should soon get their attention.

_Bat_ Posted June 24, 2007 Posted June 24, 2007 Our LEA doesn't block it, but one of my schools has requested us to block it just for that school. There was a bit of debate about it as it can contain useful videos for the lessons, especially for primary school kids. However youtube was reguarly visited during breakfast club and the more it got used the more likely it was for someone to come across unsuitable material.

plock Posted June 25, 2007 Posted June 25, 2007 Roland, I agree totally... However, we have a brand new school, with a brand new W2K3 domain, which as you can imagine, is lightening fast. Speed isn't an issue for us, our students well-being is. Sadly to say, some selection process should have been put in place to ensure YouTubes content is appropriate for ages of 12+. I understand what you're saying, but from a selfish point of view I suppose, the internet is full of inappropriate materials, which can be accessed so easily as a young person.

localzuk Posted June 25, 2007 Posted June 25, 2007 @Roland - We have kids here aged between 8 and 13, which means that a huge amount of content on the net is not appropriate for them, including a lot of stuff on youtube. This goes for all the video services really too.

The staff HATE us even more for this even through the Head ask for it. As for headphones we got a box of 31 for each ICT suite gave them to the teacher & we never have to deal with them again.
