laserblazer Posted July 1, 2012 Posted July 1, 2012 I remember going from 300bps to 2k and thinking "wow".
CESIL Posted July 1, 2012 Posted July 1, 2012 I remember going from 300bps to 2k and thinking "wow". I remember being able to shove a telephone handset into a cradle and get 300baud and thinking how cool that was...
synaesthesia Posted July 1, 2012 Posted July 1, 2012 I remember being able to shove a telephone handset into a cradle and get 300baud and thinking how cool that was... "What do you mean, my neon glowing phone shaped like Marilyn Monroe isn't suitable for use with this cradle?"
Chris_in_notts Posted July 2, 2012 Posted July 2, 2012 no screenshot here but last time I check I had 82mb down and 9.6mb upload with Virgin 100mb line
Oaktech Posted July 2, 2012 Posted July 2, 2012 over the last 5 days i've had (from a connection promised at 10mb when we renewed with BT 6 months ago) no more than 9680Kbp/s and as low as 1096Kbp/s. At one point, the upstream rate was slightly higher than the downstream. BT are refusing to accept that there is anything wrong with this, in a 'well, it still works doesn't it' kind of way.
aerospacemango Posted July 2, 2012 Posted July 2, 2012 I had reason to be doing stuff with my bthomehub last night, and couldn't help noticing that although the speedtest on my phone shows around 12-18Meg, the hub shows a constant speed of 23Meg....
dave.81 Posted July 2, 2012 Posted July 2, 2012 Bit difficult to say as it changes so much over the day! 6.30am i'll get around 7meg down and 0.4 up, at 7.30pm i'm lucky to get 1meg down!
jonatkinson Posted July 2, 2012 Posted July 2, 2012 I have been using Virgin Media for around 4 years now with very good service.. I get 60MB Down and 4 up.. As advertised. Does drop to around 45MB during the early evening sometimes.. I am only 500 Yards from the Virgin Exchange though, with helps.

I was getting a consistently lower rate on my old Dell laptop which only had a 54mbps adapter...I bought a tiny Edimax 150mbps adapter and now get the same speed on laptop and desktop...

cpjitservices Posted July 3, 2012 Posted July 3, 2012 http://www.speedtest.net/result/2042346729.png Only one provider here, at the moment!
andyturpie Posted August 9, 2012 Posted August 9, 2012 As I am in my second home also : http://www.speedtest.net/result/2110074154.png
tmcd35 Posted August 9, 2012 Posted August 9, 2012 Well I pay for 50Mbps with Virgin, which is as fast as the offer here at the mo. Probably get arounf 35-40Mbps consistently however I have noticed one anomaly - LoveFilm still pauses and caches even on SD quality. Funny thing I've just spent the week at me mums with a 2Mbps (if lucky) Plus.Net connection and had zero streaming problems from LoveFilm, go figure!
SchoolsBroadband Posted August 13, 2012 Posted August 13, 2012 19.6Mbit download and 2.2Mbit upload here on an ADSL2+ Annex M product from my own company I do live about 400m from the telephone exchange which does help!
twin--turbo Posted August 13, 2012 Posted August 13, 2012 Still not great here. http://www.speedtest.net/result/2117396902.png I have cable available but after you take out there internet + phone + basic TV then it's getting expensive.. I guess I could port my BT line mind may save a few quid. But I would lose my email address that I have had for 10 year ( although I own 3 other domains with email on my own server ) Rob

Think that is from all the port blocking / traffic shaping / management that VM do which is pants, wish I had the money to swap to an ADSL2+ connection, might be slower but at least consistent
cpjitservices Posted August 14, 2012 Posted August 14, 2012 7Meg if I'm lucky! Even though I get 7 meg the ISP is so bad that half the time the internet connection itself disconnects and doesn't come back up until 8am the next morning!
twin--turbo Posted August 14, 2012 Posted August 14, 2012 was in an area today where 3G is 6 Times faster than ADSL.. Rob

sted Posted August 15, 2012 Posted August 15, 2012 as bt openreach seem loath to do a proper roll-out maybe its time to change their universal service obligation to have a minimum internet speed that increases every x years
SchoolsBroadband Posted August 15, 2012 Posted August 15, 2012 It was quite interesting to see that Ofcom today claimed that the average UK broadband speed was 9Mbit.
twin--turbo Posted August 15, 2012 Posted August 15, 2012 It was quite interesting to see that Ofcom today claimed that the average UK broadband speed was 9Mbit. Well I have been in an area today with an average 3Mb broadband.... On 3G.. over a wide 5mile radius in very bad terrain. On ADSL... 256k 512k if your lucky! Infinity..... The time most people have to wait to get any decent service. Rob
nicholab Posted August 20, 2012 Posted August 20, 2012 If you are getting slow speeds start with fitting a high quality face plate filter like adslnations and place router at master. My parents get a stable 10mb in this setup.
6Foot2 Posted August 20, 2012 Posted August 20, 2012 My connection was down for more than 6 hours yesterday. Same happened about 2 weeks ago. When an engineer called he said that a component in one of the boxes [in his words: "one of the green boxes"] on the street had blown in the heat of the day. Same again yesterday? [Did anyone else have problems with their Virgin broadband yesterday from 2:00 pm until 8:00 or 9:00 pm?]
