alonebfg Posted May 3, 2007 Posted May 3, 2007 This is a bit of a fun poll really and am just intrested. As i am sat im my back garden with my laptop and a nice pint of beer after lighting the BBQ with my fingers slightly singed. I thought what do other people prefer. I know i have tried both but must admit I cant ever see myself buying a gas BBQ of comi one. The reason for this is there is no fun is a fake one i dont think and if you are going to use gas may as well put it in the oven. I did once have a gas one ok i will admit it was simpler to light easy to use but the food did not taste the same. I have just bought a bag of wisky barell chips and on the bag it says not to be used with gas BBQs and last time i used these they made the food tast soooo nice. It would be good to know. Sorry if it is silly think it might be the combo of beer and drugs lol.
Joedetic Posted May 3, 2007 Posted May 3, 2007 If you're on holiday those little ones in the trays are cool. The last BBQ i had was when i was on holiday with mates last summer. We found a rocky cliff that you had to climb over a wall and climb down a hillside to get to, but the view was awesome! Down in Torquay...very nice incdeed. Also good is lighter fluid. We got a bottle....for a purely constructive purpose you understand *looks shifty*
GlennT Posted May 3, 2007 Posted May 3, 2007 Yup....those little disposable ones are cool .... and cheap! Tho' nothing beats the thrill of the "real thing" with lots of lighter fluid! Especially if you like your food "Flame Grilled" and don't mind losing an eyebrow or two!!
craiglay Posted May 3, 2007 Posted May 3, 2007 There's nothing like setting fire to your food with a good lump of charcoal!! Craig
alonebfg Posted May 3, 2007 Author Posted May 3, 2007 I dont know If anyone is in objection but i would like to start a tread (will ask admin first) for great Edugeek recipes to share I know i have a few and to post them would be great. I know i love nothing more than a good BBQ a Good real ale Old perculiar of spitfire are nice. And if you like maranade your steak in it with some honey overnight its really nice.
Joedetic Posted May 3, 2007 Posted May 3, 2007 Old Perculiar and spitfire are ace. I love Pedigree as a good ale to trust that's good most places you go. (Plus it's brewed locally )
StewartKnight Posted May 3, 2007 Posted May 3, 2007 Don't use a gas bbq, you may as well put everything under the grill, as it's the same thing...... just outdoors!
ajbritton Posted May 3, 2007 Posted May 3, 2007 Charcoal here. I find it handy to have a blowtorch handy if I'm in a hurry to get it lit!
pooley Posted May 3, 2007 Posted May 3, 2007 If you're on holiday those little ones in the trays are cool. The last BBQ i had was when i was on holiday with mates last summer. We got a bottle....for a purely constructive purpose you understand *looks shifty* As long as people dont bury them in the sand - the mrs works in Burns unit of local hospital - had any number of kids in with nasty burns last year because lazy bast@rds buried hot bbq trays instead of disposing of them properly. Oh and I've gone over to gas - cooked outside every night for the last 3 weeks
alonebfg Posted May 3, 2007 Author Posted May 3, 2007 we use the disposable ones and bought a really cool idea from the local collage its called a disposable bbq disposal unit its basicaly a stand when you finish you put the lid on the bbq and drop it into a sealed unit and fill with water with a 4 leter bottle and leave it for about 5 mins and then you tip it into a bag as it cools it down so much you can touch it and handle it. i tend just to bag the whole thing up and empty it out when i get home wash it out and use it again next time we go out.
TechMonkey Posted May 4, 2007 Posted May 4, 2007 or just dump water in them and wait 5 mins. No device needed. If doing a proper BBQ then charcoal all the time, but if just cooking BBQ style in an evening gas is a life saver. But I think I have got a combi so that could be why I'm ok with it.
Ben_Stanton Posted May 4, 2007 Posted May 4, 2007 I have a standard charcoal and a gas - depends on the event really. I find it easier cooking on a bigger scale in the gas BBQ. If it's just me and 'her' - then it's the charcoal!
ThatBoringBloke Posted May 4, 2007 Posted May 4, 2007 Use it and loose it disposable charcoal one for me. 5 of them for £6 at my local shop!
Geoff Posted May 4, 2007 Posted May 4, 2007 Last time I did a BBQ we used some prepacked charcoal bags that you just light. Dead easy
sidewinder Posted May 6, 2007 Posted May 6, 2007 Has to be proper charcoal for me No lighter fluid or anything either, the real way to do it is get newspaper lit, get the charcoal burning and spend some time keeping it lit After about an hour it will be perfect and will last for ages. Gas is just no fun, its the same as doing it indoors on the grill!
elsiegee40 Posted May 6, 2007 Posted May 6, 2007 It's the Girl Guide in me... I'm a signed up member of pyromaniacs ananymous! Charcoal - gas is for wimps!
kestrel1 Posted May 6, 2007 Posted May 6, 2007 It's gotta be charcoal. The food tastes better well burnt. Last one we had was when on holiday. Got a bag of charcoal that you light in two corners & away you go. Blooming great.
eduabncs Posted May 7, 2007 Posted May 7, 2007 Well as an Aussie I voted Gas. And I'm also going to put you guys straight Us Aussie men nearly all use a gas BBQ. Aussie men take pride in their BBQ kit, the bigger it is (large hotplate and grill , side & top grills etc) all the better! Gas keeps the food clean, cooked through and hot. And no smoke either so your neighbors Don't have to go back inside to escape it! Also it's damn hard to set yourself, grass & nearest bush/tree etc, on fire...! :blob6: Why do you Poms always have to make things so bloody difficult! :toothy7:
Joedetic Posted May 7, 2007 Posted May 7, 2007 I would have thought all the calor gas bottles, regulators, bits of pipes, ignitors and lava bricks to maintain and replace would have been a lot more complicated than a metal bucket with some holes in the bottom and a grill grid thingy slung on the top wiht a charcole fire in it Difficult my pale british arse
alonebfg Posted May 7, 2007 Author Posted May 7, 2007 also i like my food chargrilled with the taste of hot charcoal of the nice whisky chips i put on it to give it flavor.as for smoke if a bbq is done right some is not a problem. my cousin is from auz still lives there and he swares by coal. he said in the park they have big communal bbqs massive things and all you do is bring some coal a few shrimps and stuff and if its lit he said every joins in and has a right laugh.
