With a school that size, +1 for the HP ML110 G5. Excellent value for money and solidly built. 2 of my schools run these, bought off the shelf, upgraded to 2GB RAM, extra HD configured as mirrored RAID from the onboard RAID controller. One school has about 25-30 clients and the other 40-50 ish. They run very well, and I haven't experienced any problems with them over a year (touching wood). If your wanting a solution which you can just move an image to alternate hardware, try experimenting with virtualisation. Ps, I'm also in the process of purchacing one for another school I manage. Yes, working in 5 of my primary schools. Cant remember exactly how to do it as i set it up ages ago. When i'm next in, i'll try post how to do it. You have to extract some files out of the Windows Server 2003 setup disk, and make sure they're in the right place. How much RAM have you got in your clients and how big is your BartPE image. BartPE over RIS copies the image into RAM and executes from there, so you'll need to fit the image in RAM plus about 100MB free to run BartPE. 256MB is shady on a rather cut down image, often running out of RAM, 192MB reboots everytime Craig

I have mandatory profiles for all pupils, and roaming profiles for staff so i added the registry keys to the mandatory profiles, and assume the staff can select whatever language they like. Job done. Craig

You can try this Group Policy item Computer Configuration-> Windows Settings -> Security settings -> Local policies -> Security Options -> Interactive Logon : Number of previous logons to cache Set to zero and Windows won't be able to log them on if they're not connected to the network. I would assume it will let local accounts login. Best to test first! Craig

Are u running the Equinet Cachepilot now then? I have them in my schools running as the proxy and Espresso server. I have issues when the client computer is running IE7, all I get is the red cross in a placeholder. If I double click it (as an admin) I get prompted to "use Windows Media Player plugin" and it seems to work. Clients running with IE6 are unaffected. My clients are also setup to exclude the imediate subnet from the proxy. I'm looking to set IE7 to allow the plugin for all users, as it seems to be a per-user setting (understandable but annoying). I probably wouldn't do that as I've had problems where the printer would be unavailable to the print server if a user prints directly to it. Is the printer added as a machine wide printer or a user only printer (default)? Craig

As a fellow Norfolk ICT Tech, i'll break it to you that ICT Solutions filter WSUS directly and always have. All is not lost however, as they now have an WSUS 3 SP1 upstream server. If you give them a call, they may provide the IP to you, else i can have a look at my settings tomorrow. Craig

Hi County have pushed out WSUS 3 SP1 to a number of the primary schools I work in. I'm not complaining as it saves me a load of work. However, it seems regardless of network size, it can take between 100MB - 500MB in RAM. (w3wp.exe and sqlserv.exe) No other SQL or web services run on the servers. My biggest network probably has 40-50 domain machines Is this about right? Has anyone got any tips to optimise memory usage? Thanks, Craig

There is a setting in the Intel drivers if you're using the 2200BG's and up "Roaming aggressiveness" that may helpwith that. Craig

Yup... IMHO The only real good thing about it is the Logon interface (I work with Nursery to Yr6 schools) Everything else can be done much better with Group Policies. (This is my opinion and not the opinion of my employer)

Also, depending on the version of Winsuite (i think), new users are not automatically assigned to any group so you'll have to place them in a group and make them members of the group in AD before the correct desktop will load.
