Not sure about your issue with moving around the apps.

 

But for the other issues you will need a Mac Server Running OS X Lion Server, the mobile device management addin of the software will actually disable access to the settings of the device.

Hi AngryITGuy Great info above got a Mac running server can you point me in the direction of instructions for how to set it up to use and manage the MDM please sorry to bother you really appreciate the assistance

Yes, we wondered that? Do you have your iPads linked in to the school network (for user work areas etc.) or are they stand-alone?

We use an app called File Browser for this.

 

We have our iPads setup to connect to generic shares, each time the user tries to connect to a share they are prompted for credentials. You can have it setup so that it connects with specific credentials each time without notifying the user.

 

All staff iPads are also linked to their My Documents too we have the username hard coded to the app but prompt staff for passwords, its a bit more difficult to do with students as they all share the devices in school.

 

The app is pretty secure as any changes to it are controlled by password access so users cannot connect to any other shares without the admin password, you can also lock it down so users can add to a remote share but not delete from it whist using the iPad.

If connected to local network, Filebrowser app (by Stratospherix) allows connection to windows shares, and integrates with quick office to allow save-back.

 

If not on local network, blocks such as SMBWebClient for Moodle can allow read access to windows shares via web, and users can then email saved files back to themselves to copy back onto network at a later point in time.

 

Alternatively, Filebrowser can operate over VPN to allow access remotely.

 

What we need now is for FileBrowser / CloudOn integration so that we can ditch QuickOffice.

We got 10 ipad, all the ipads have the same name.

 

I restore a backup to one ipad to restore it to its last 'restore point'

I then proceed to install apps on this ipad

Once done I then take a backup - which will act as the new 'restore point'

I then proceed to restore this backup to the remain ipads

 

Is this the most efficient way?

That's basically how we do it, create an "image" so to speak and restore backup from that. Doesn't always work with folders, that seems to work when it wants to.

What are people doing about management of App purchases on multiple iPads?

 

I've seen lots of mentions across t'internet of people syncing apps to 20-30 iPads from 1 iTunes account, cloning with backups etc. Surely this isn't OK licensing-wise for purchased apps?

 

We have less than 10 here currently, but we have opted to set them all up with individual Apple IDs which is a royal pain, but we can't see how else to deal with the legality of app purchases.

 

Would be interested to hear other peoples ideas on this.

Legally you are probably doing it the right way, although you can just purchase through one account, then gift to all others, but for your own sanity, you may want to look at a third party management software solution, such as the ones posted. Until apple gives UK volume app licensing, i dont see many more options.

Need some more input into doing some simple things with IPADS!!!

 

First of just a reminder i work in primary school, so I need a solution which is easy for kids

to use.

 

1) Can we print to the school Ricoh Photocopiers & the Konica Minolta Laser Printer easily?

2) Can we save work to a single network location easily

Yes and Yes.

 

Ricoh Copiers and the Konica Minolta are not AirPrint ready, but if you are running a Mac Server (a Mac Mini Server) to help manage your devices then Printopia creates an AirPrint ready service for shared printers. I haven't had a chance to see how network print stations / copiers are taking to the AirPrint side of things but I can understand if they want to be a bit careful otherwise all sorts of people could send 'interesting' things to print.

 

Saving to a single network location is likely to be best via a WebDAV share. Most servers will give you this functionality for either a generic share or for individual user shares.

I was looking for the iPad charging solution, found this link which claims sync and charging both. Might be useful solution. Is anyone using this type of trolley?

 

+1 for the UnoCarts mentioned earlier, we have sold a few of those so far with excellent reviews thus far.

 

Another thing I notice nobody has mentioned, you can create a single exchange account, and link that across all devices, allows you to use some decent features through ActivSync device policies (through OWA on the Manage My Organisation Section - Exch 2010/07).

 

Some features of ActivSync Device Policies that WORK with Apple (some features available don't) are:

- Require a password (enforce strengths available

- Password lifetimes

- Enable/Disable Text messaging

- Enable/Disable Camera

- Allow WiFi

- Allow Bluetooth

 

Plus, its free & most people already have exchange servers - so I guess its just 1 CAL really.

Just in general, the fanatical push to these things leaves me cold....from an enterprise "ready" point of view they are a long way away from being a viable solution.

 

The deployment tools are not great....the licensing model is non-existant(what has been suggested by others here is illegal, but there is no other way for now...) and the management (via iTunes!!!!) is ridiculous.....

 

When the Apple person said sync by iTunes from one computer...I nearly told him to get out.....

 

I am asking staff what the actual requirement is, then showing how it can be achieved with the current technology standards/portfolio in place. The current support model is almost 3 times that of the mac/PC support models in my calculations.....

 

I readily admit I am no expert on these things, but when the basic questions cannot be answered in a way I expect, then I cannot consider the item....

Volume licensing has opened for a number of countries.

Unfortunately, it's not available everywhere, so i guess, we're forced to maintain multiple individual accounts all with no payment details on, or download / buy once and then copy to multiple devices.
