  1. Has anyone recently done an MIS comparision? When I mean recent within the last year? We are an International school going down the road of looking for a new MIS. Currently we use SIMS. We dont charge fees, so fee billing functionality is not required. Thank you
  2. I did test thing setting out but it was the same.... There is no issue with joining a wifi network once I am logged in only at the login screen it seems to happen.
  3. Hopefully there is a simple answer.... We have domain machines using radius (user authentication) and gpo pushing out the WIFI SSID etc... I know once the user logs out it drops the WIFI connection. Thats not the issue.. The issue is at the login screen. When I select either my hotspot or home Wifi connection at this point by going to the bottom right corner and selecting the WIFI network & entering the password. It eventually connects and then it disconnects after a few seconds. Why? Is it something to do with that its a domain machine and its now allowed by design? or it is something to do with the GPO for the WIFI SSID???
  4. That's a bit much trouble for something that should be straightforward. Where is the configuration file kept for the deployment service? How does it now which server to connect to?
  5. We have two teams... Systems & Desktop Support... Systems will deal with the patching side of things. We need Desktop support to deploy or fix client related issues. As part of our security policies, desktop support are now allowed to logon on to servers. I have installed the deployment ui on there computers for one stream of the school but how do I have another one installed. Ideally I'm looking for two desktop shortcuts on their PC's one for each deployment database.
  6. We have 2 different streams of schools thus we have two SIMS servers. We have techs who need access to both deployments on their PC's so they can push SIMS out to users from either of the schools. Can it be done?
  7. Thanks for all your replies... Managed to sort it... I'm just using as quick info, not going to use it for anything else.
  8. I came across a script on the web which displays the free ram of a computer which i want to use with bginfo but it doesn't work and I tried but im not great with WMI/VBS, can someone please help Set winmgt = "winmgmts:{impersonationLevel=impersonate}!//" Set WMI_Query = GetObject(winmgt).InstancesOf('Win32_OperatingSystem') For Each Item in WMI_Query FreeRam = Item.FreePhysicalMemory Next FreeRam = Round(FreeRam/(1024)) Echo “” & FreeRam & ” MB”
  9. Got the email part sorted
  10. Don't worry about the 500 user limit, must of the users have been moved in to the group manually, its just automating the new users that get added to the teachers OU's Take your time. enjoy the rugby
  11. Thank you all for your replies... Thank you Plum for your code... I have come across a few things that didn't work.... 1) Every time the script is run it adds the same users even though they are already a member of $ADGroupname - so tracing which new users have been added would be difficult 2) When you have more than one OU to search through.. It adds the users to the group but then immediately removes them I can revert to my original script which seems to solve the problem - so its just a minor issue, but I prefer the elegance of your coding if you could get it to work if($member.distinguishedname -notlike "*OU=Staff OU1,$ADDomain*" -and $member.distinguishedname -notlike "*OU=Staff OU2,$ADDomain*") And this would be an additional request which would make this perfect (but optional) Some how get it to email logfile it created at the end of the process
  12. Below is my script that moves users who are found in a particular ou(s) and adds them to a security group Also removes users when they are no longer in that OU. Scripts works great.... but cannot get it to display any output to the text file... its empty... When the script is run.... there is no console output... it just runs Need it to display which users have been added or removed from the security group Import-Module ActiveDirectory ## Your AD domain name $ADDomain = 'dc=contoso,dc=com' ## Dynamic group name $ADGroupname = 'Group1' ## Logfile $log = "c:\logs\dynamic_grp$(Get-Date -format ddMMyy).txt" ## OU list to search users $ADOUs = @( "OU=Staff OU1,$ADDomain", "OU=Staff OU2,$ADDomain" ) $users = @() # Searching users in the specified OUs foreach($OU in $ADOUs){ $users += Get-ADUser -Filter * -SearchBase "$OU" } foreach($user in $users) { Add-ADGroupMember -Identity $ADGroupname -Members $user.samaccountname -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue |Out-File -filepath $log -Append } ## Make sure that each user in the group meets the selection criteria. If not, they are removed from the group $members = Get-ADGroupMember -Identity $ADGroupname foreach($member in $members) { if($member.distinguishedname -notlike "*OU=Staff OU1,$ADDomain*" -and $member.distinguishedname -notlike "*OU=Staff OU2,$ADDomain*") { Remove-ADGroupMember -Identity $ADGroupname -Members $member.samaccountname -Confirm:$false |Out-File -filepath $log -Append } }

  14. Hi, Thanks for all your replies. I will start my job around about mid September, so I don't have access to a my capita account. I would have like to prepared myself a bit. I come from the CMIS world where the wasn't any local client software to install on users machines just a shorcut to the database & program on a shared drive. I hope they have SOLUS 3 it sounds great, and the moment I have no details, so I am really shooting in the dark. So SIMS has client software that needs to be updated as well as the main application on the server?
  15. Hi, I am starting a new job as systems admin, the school uses SIMS. Haven't used it before So what would a system admin role entail for SIMS is it the usual i.e. backups and updates? Also could you point me towards some guides towards backing up, updating etc.. and anything else you think I might need. Is there any gotchas about the system that I need to know about too? Your help and advice would be very much appreciated Thank you for your time
  16. I have just started delving into using SCCM for patching... Trying to get my head around a few things... I have followed some youtube videos & some articles, where they suggest creating SUG based on year and not products. So for 2018 for example, have security updates pulled down for Server 2012 & Windows 8.1, which have been filtered so they have not expired and not super ceded. and then add them to a SUG called Year 2018. And then deploy that... the reason being I think that the SCCM client which then deploys the updates will automatically update the correct machines with the correct patches. So splitting SUG by product is a waste of time. Is this correct?
  17. My thinking at the moment PDC is Azure, a local DC, Bonded internet connection - so no internet downtime, switches & routers on UPS. That's for now, eventually all our servers in azure when price is more competitive.
  18. So in terms of building a robust & resilient network having a PDC in the cloud and local DC's is a good way forward would you say?
  19. My bad not power cut but if we lost internet connectivity, apologies
  20. Sorry I am probably confusing the matter, what I am trying to understand in the setup of having a PDC in the cloud and a read only DC on the local network. If a power cut occurs, then will windows devices such as laptops, pcs etc.. will they not be able to log on using only the local DC. So what I mean is logon and still access network shares, print services, local applications even though the PDC is offline? I hope that makes a bit more sense
  21. Hi, Just want to clarify this point in my head. If I have the PDC in the cloud and a read only DC on site. Power cut occurs... Won't devices use the on site domain controller for logon and authentication? Also am I missing something, Priced up a DC using the Azure VM calculator and it came to $42 a month - which doesn't seem to bad?
  22. Is just he way things are heading, feel more secure knowing its on Azure then held at another school
  23. Thanks, Im bit old skool... I haven't come any schools that split the FSMO roles... so I still use PDC but in most cases one DC holds all the roles.
  24. Quite an interesting thread with some interesting ideas... Will definitely looking into blob archive storage sounds! I like the idea of hosting a DC in Azure.... It got me thinking.... How feasible is this in a school of 4K students .... host the PDC in Azure which is connected via VPN. On premise have 2 DC's. So devices use the local DC's. Any changes to AD are updated at the PDC and replicated to the on premise DC's.
