ICT Training for Under 25 ICT Technicians with no degree

I am not certain as to whether this is a country wide option or not but I have recently taken on a new ICT Technician who has tinkering capabilities only but is a very good learner so I wanted to get him some training.

 

I attending a meeting at which I discovered that he could obtain around 13,800 pounds worth of training under what was called the Zenos Academy Advanced Traineeship. I had to sign up to permit him absence from work to attend the workshops which amounts to 27 days over an 18 month period but he would (on completion and successfully passing exams) be awareded, Advanced Apprenticeship Certificate, Options to do MCP/MCSA/MCDST as part of training scheduled programme, City and Guilds Advanced Diploma for IT Practioners, NVQ Level 3, Key Skills Level 2.

 

All this is government funded. If you are interested you could contact Zenos thorugh Zenos Advanced Apprenticeships If you have any technicians that fit the bill, under 25 and do not have a degree it could be useful for them. Wish I was under 25

We had a Modern Apprentice last year, in association with the local college not sure if that's related - this looks like it's worth a closer look though.

IIRC you have to sit around until you're something like 55 before the state renews it's interest in giving you non-trivial sums of money for training.

This scheme was also ran in our LA, I heard rumblings of discrimintation issues across the UK due to it only been offered to under 25's, but not 100% sure if this is true.

It ounds about right to me, our LEA does it as well. Just does not seem fair to those of us considered out the range for decent training.

Our council was offered that but only 4 people went for it so i think it won't be happening now

Just as an addendum to all this I did ask the very same question as some of you have raised about the over 25s. Zenos did say that as part of the same type of government funded initiative they are looking at the possibilities of expanding the training programme or even redevoloping the training programme to encompass the wrinklier variety of technicians/managers/leaders whatever title you give yourselves!! If they do come back with anything of this kind in the future I will certainly post it on here for everyone to join the party!!

This is so ageist, I'm over 25 & when I did my foundation degree (2006-2009) there was not a penny in financial aid that I could claim.

When there is help for the youngsters they are too lazy to get off their backsides

I know this is rather off topic, but I am looking at doing foundation degree in September. Did you do yours full or part time? Whats was the subject in, and how did you find it? Sorry for asking a llot at once.

I am already doing a degree with the OU, would recommend them if you have the ability to work from home. Requires good discapline though, no lazys should apply.

I know this is rather off topic, but I am looking at doing foundation degree in September. Did you do yours full or part time? Whats was the subject in, and how did you find it? Sorry for asking a llot at once.

My course was based at Newman University College in Birmingham and the course title was ICT & Technical Support.

It was a very good course with theoretical and practical modules using Microsoft, Linux and Cisco training materials. The final year had some business modules which was interesting.

The thread is getting on for four years old now, I expect if there was anything to be had we'd have heard about it through other channels by now. Shame really, I qualify for it until next year so I'd be interested...

Just chiming in on this thread; Zenos is not the only provider that does Apprenticeships/Advanced Apprenticeships. We currently have one of our tech doing (this year) his NVQ 2 in IT & Telecoms program and related certs (this years it's the Cisco Essentials, comparable to the A+), with the view to do his NVQ 3 in IT & Telecoms and related professional certs next year thru Cambridge Regional College. Our local college earlier this year also started to offer a similar program (however we had already signed up our tech with CRC) with even had limited fully funded places for the over-25's.

 

To be honest, the best advice is to contact your local colleges on a regular basis to find out what funding is available to you and on what courses.

 

For instance, last year our local college had funding for the following courses (regardless of age):

ESOL - Free

DMS (yr 1 of 2) - 50% off

CIPD - 50% off

ILM LVL 3 First Line Management Award - 50% off

ILM NVQ 2 in Team Leading - Free

C&G NVQ 2 in Business & Admin - Free

ILM NVQ 3 in Management - Free
