Do any of your institutions have either a Senior Technician or Assistant Network Manager situated between the NM and the technicians, someone with supervisor responsibilities?

Just wondered what the setup was like elsewhere.

Cheers.

Historically we've worked that way with an Assistant NM. We had the NM in a wider-reaching role with the Assistant NM undertaking more general day to day supervision of technicians / ensuring things were logged etc.

At the min we've not got an Assistant NM position due to changes and promotions - set up is currently a Head of IT Services (imagine a cross between a non-teaching supervisory/strategic NM with some Director of IT type roles) line managing the NM, a Senior Technician and a Technician. In this scenario the Head of IT Services and NM work closely and both manage the lower team.

Here its goes network manager, other Senior Tech and myself (Senior Tech) then the part time tech

Two senior technicians? Is that by virtue of experience and career progression? Is one more 'senior' than the other?

Cheers.

Here its Network Manager -> Assistant Network Manager -> ICT Technician (myself) -> Service Desk Administrator

Here I'm all 4 of those... But I still only get paid once.

We have:

Network Manager (Me)

2x Senior Technicians

3x Technicians

The two Senior Techs look after the other technicians and run the helpdesk etc. They both then have other responsibilities such as Switch programming, server maintainance etc.

Head of service (me) also responsible for outsource support (currently 2 primaries) and a load of other things which are either vaguely connected (or only very loosely connected) to IT, and was originally developed to work onthe above + pick up additional strategic work relating to a complete new build - non-BSF/PFI and almost complete!)

Network Manager (Me)

Technician

Hopefully we will get an Apprentice to join us at some stage over the next year, although I would prefer a entry level technician and bump my existing technician up to a Senior Technician, and then look at an apprentice as we will have better scope for training said apprentice with more staff as we are fairly well stretched already but many hands do make light work

I used to work in a Secondary School and the levels were

- Network Manager

- Assistant Network Manager

- x2 IT Technicians (1 of which was the general IT Tech / Website Guru etc. and 1 of which was IT Tech / VLP (SharePoint) the later was me and I worked with the NM closer than the Assist NM due to reasons I don't really want to say in public)

But yeah, you get the idea. :-)

I don't work there anymore so it just the 3 members of staff.

James.
