If you have a decent network. e.g. Latest equipment, decent servers, decent images etc...One tech per 300 laptop / computer is fine.

 

For example once your network is on Server 2008 with a new server farm all virtualised nicely, images sorted with multicast ability, nice computers etc. Then your only perfoming routine maintenance and your 3-5 year replacement cycle. Nowa days alot of non hardware errors can be sorted by a simple reimage or image recreation. Just a simple click of a button and the computer is good again.

 

Of course there is lots more to do but...things can get dull once your network is good :(
