As you know I have been here for nearly a year and half since starting the job the network and the job its self has expanded. When starting the job we had two servers and approximately 80 workstations. We now operate with 6 servers and over 120 workstations plus ADD NUMBER laptops.

 

Also I took on responsibility of gaining quotes and ordering equipment and stock and have saved school a large amount of money. As you are aware recently I just saved school around £1000 in support contracts of equipment we no longer own. Often when getting quotes I have saved the school money often saving large amounts.

 

As well as the work of Technician 1 such upgrading the hardware and software in the school, maintain records of the networks and general are responsible for day to day and running of the networks. I also ensure the all computers are available, software and various network connections are kept running and all the equipment is available for use. I provide assistance to staff and students and help develop student’s skills via classroom help and lunchtime clubs. As well as liaising with external companies in effect I have been a ‘Network Manager’ here.

 

Added to that we have also taken part in numerous pilot study’s from QCA KS3 ICT SAT Tests to piloting RM software. Just recently I have been approached by RM to start initial inquiries about getting the school involved RM User Panels which shows how much profile of the school has changed since I have started working here and considerable amount of time outside of work maintaining the profile of the school.

 

I have also taken upon myself to develop my personal knowledge by continuing my career development such taking the RM Certified Professional Course Level 1 exam with plan to do level 2 when it is realised, continued contact with other IT staff within schools. I am also looking to see if I can fund CISCO Networking course which is an industry standard training course. Also in next 12 months I plan on taking European Certification of IT Professionals as well.

 

I understand in climate that this school and education in general found themselves in especially in Leicestershire. Asking for any kind of pay rise above the county requirements is not an option and in end amount of pay is not a deciding factor.

 

At the moment I employed as a IT Technician 1 with 4 weeks paid holiday (plus bank holidays) off a year which can only be taken in school holidays.

 

The biggest factor to me is being recognised for the job and profession I do which is why I am formally asking the school to consider increasing my amount of paid holiday by an extra week and that my job title is changed to Network Manager 1 but for my pay grade to remain at its current level.

 

I also understand if this has to be done as part of a formal pay and work review and if this is the case I request a meeting with you for this to take place. I enjoy working here and with the staff and students all I am asking is for the work I am doing to be recognised.

At a guess, I'd say that they won't believe you. Whats that saying... "you don't know what you've got until it is gone".

 

I mean of course, designing a website to that standard is just like using a word processor and requires very little skill. Also, helping run a network with both windows and linux based servers is a piece of cake... any idiot who can use a computer can work out how to set up a network. I mean, average people set up networks at home all the time, so whats so difficult at school?

Employed full time as Network Manager on just under 16K (if job evaluation stays 'as is' will drop to just over 15K). Manage 9 servers (Netware, Windows, Linux), approx 250 workstations, 100 laptops 31 whiteboards (so far) and 50 assorted printers. Started 11 yrs ago as IT tech/AV tech and have a term-time assistant now (on approx 9K). My job involves the usual day to day tasks of keeping everything running smoothly, along with hardware repairs, hw/sw installs, network planning/design, ict procurement, the odd bit of cabling, A/V provison (inc theatre lighting), along with staff inset training/assistance/advice and pupil ict assistance (hardware parts of the sylabus and more technical topics).

Recently appointed as a trainee ICT Technician on £13,875 a year. This is before the April 3% rise, so hopefully now just over £14k.

 

After reading this I appear to be very lucky to be at that wage scale on a trainee post.

I'm full-time, employed as Network Manager, manage ~220 'things' (computers, servers, printers etc...), have to work term-time + inset (5 days) + 4 weeks, and have no formal IT qualifications (at the moment) - as I left uni due to financial/other problems.

 

I earn £17.5k at the moment and it should be going up to just under £18k by September I believe. Not too bad for my first full-time, unqualified job (I do have a fair amount of experience from part time jobs, running my own business and from managing a mini-network at my old high school though). In a few years I will likely think about moving on, yet to figure out where though - as I don't like working for someone else's financial profit.

In September 2005 started on circa 15.5k, full time, 23 days holiday + bank holidays, as an IT Technician. With incremental rises this is now around 17.25K, which isn't bad for someone working to my original job description. I wish I knew who that someone was.

As I'm part-time, I worked mine out Pro-Rata and was somewhat surprised... it was better than I thought. My problem is not my hourly rate; it's how many hours the school are prepared to pay me for.

Heheh, I've moved from 10.5k up to 13.5k after my promotion from Technical Assistant to Technician. (Also got made permanent at the same time - 14 months after my two week contract started!)

ICT Technical Manager & SIMS Manager - 33.5k/ term time only + 4 so it works out a bit less - 32k although I'm allowed to knock time of my holiday working for awards evening/ open evening duties et al so I only end up doing about 2.5 weeks in the hols.

This gives you a chance to evaluate your job / roles and see which of 4 levels you are. There are no salaries set against these levels but it is good to put certain aspects of your job in comparison to others.

 

It does fail to cover certain areas that you may do as extra (training parents, coding, reports, etc) but it covers the bulk of technical and managerial roles.
