Rawns Posted January 20, 2011 Posted January 20, 2011 I'm just wondering what kind of security measures you all have in place on your home computers, or what regular maintenance you perform like spyware scans, malware scans etc, and what software you would recommend for security? I use: - Avast! Free edition + Monthly full system scan - Spybot S&D + Monthly full system scan - Standard Windows Firewall

I run an AV scan periodically, but no regular timings, just when I think about it. Otherwise I turn all the rest off. On a daily basis I visit the same sites, all of them either official or I'm an admin on it. It's exceedingly rare that i go anywhere else. I use web based email mostly, with outlook for long term storage/contacts management, so email viruses aren't an issue. And I don't use stupid things like Limewire etc, I tend to wait till most TV comes out on DVD/blueray, and i watch movies on blue ray. I occasionally grab the odd album, but maybe 2-3 per year. The way I see it, if some hacker REALLY wants access to my system, they will get in no matter how many bits of software I run. Since I'm not idiotic to click on links I don't know/trust, I dont get the accidental/sneaky stuff, so why do I need to run software that takes up resources I can better use elsewhere? Though I have to say, since I got my new I7 machine, I haven't managed to put the CPU about 50-60% yet, and that was running 2 EvE game clients on max detail in windowed mode with media player, mIRC, TS, and a couple of web browsers running. I'm not too afraid of my AV hogging resources anymore, so might start turning on some of it.

Sirbendy Posted January 20, 2011 Posted January 20, 2011 (edited) Primary OS - Puppy Linux 5.2 booting from USB, no AV etc, bothered. Secondary OS -Win7, MSE installed, that's it. Firewall set to SPi on Router, apart from that..zip. I like my free CPU cycles. Router on plug-in timer to kill it off post midnight until 8am. Puppy for web unless I have a dire need for Windows - it's faster, RAM based, and unless I opt to save the user space, it all gets obliterated at reboot/off. For bittorrent etc, I use my KS330 NAS running SnakeOS and a 20gb Ext2 HDD, and the built in transmission client on there. Works lovely. Edited January 20, 2011 by Sirbendy

jamesfed Posted January 20, 2011 Posted January 20, 2011 Microsoft SE on all my PCs with the normal Windows Firewall - 9 times outa 10 in my experiance virisus and so on get on a PC because of user neglect not because of lack of software (although lack of software could be counted as neglect as well I gues....).

It seems very good and its nice and low on resources. i use the antivirus bit (wasn't interested in the firewall part) and it seems the best one so far for me.
Diello Posted January 20, 2011 Posted January 20, 2011 Kaspersky Internet Security (utilising AV, firewall (manual, not auto), malware protection) never do a system scan as on-access is good enough these days, hardware firewall on router, occasional Windows Defender and Spybot S&D scan.

It seems very good and its nice and low on resources. i find the firewall part a ballache and keep meaning to remove it (work provide 1 copy for my laptop) its seems to sometimes dislike file sharing so if i quickly turn on and start copyiong files to my desktop it starts copying them firewall kicks in and stops it. If i wait a few mins its fine. Seems to always want confirmation for something (usually new version of java) and annoy the hell out of me far too often desktop mse and router firewall all pc/laptops have win7 firewall or nod firewall on
