Best gaming moments

What are your best gaming moments? The bits in a game (playable not cutscene) where you just think WOW!

 

For me, I think the first half life, on the tram journey into Black Mesa, watching all the things out the window. Especially on a Voodoo2 gfx card

 

Also the beach landing on Medal of Honor (the first one). Not fantastic graphically compared to war games now, but the intensity of the level really worked.

Anything and everything that ever happens in Fallout, and most of the stuff that has happened in all the COD series. Love them all.

Mirror's Edge - not a particular moment, just the whole game.

For me it's a few bosses from the Resident Evil series And I've recently just finished Fallout New Vegas, where the final fight on that was just brilliant!

For me it was Geoff Crammonds Grand Prix on Amiga, probably the first game I played properly, and the "realistic" graphics were jaw dropping!

When myself and another sorceress took on the Ancients on Diablo 2: LOD. We had a barbarian with us but they either died or disappeared. We both ran out of mana and mana potions and were running around until our mana had sufficiently recharged enough to cast the odd spell. Then we had to run some more. Was physically quite a challenge to stay away from the Ancients.

 

It sounds sad but anyone who has played D2:LOD will know what I mean.

Unlocking my s-foils and setting shields to full front in X-Wing vs Tie Fighter or the first time I setup miniGL for Quake and playing it 3 times in a row. Aaaaah.

 

Haven't touched a software renderer since.

I remember playing Champ Man 2, it is so simple now I look back but getting Tottenham to win the league was the bestest thing ever, the flashing text as you scored... genius.

The Omaha beach landing from MoH was brilliant and quite moving in a way, I remember saying "f***ing hell!" several times just from the weight of fire spanging off metal and squadmates dropping around you!

 

Oblivion coming out of the sewers into the world for the first time, real wow moment.

I think that was the thing with the beach landing, you sit there thinking "this is stupid its impossible to do" then remember that it actually happened, and just how difficult that must have actually been.

Probably not the most original one this, but stepping out into Hyrule Field for the first time in Ocarina of Time. The N64 was my first console (I'd always had my Amiga till then) and I wasn't getting it till Xmas day, but I'd bought the game myself in anticipation. My friend, on the other hand, had an N64 but wasn't getting Zelda till Xmas day. Thus a plan formed, and we spent an afternoon getting through the Deku Tree, which took an unbelievable 4 hours for us to manage somehow, even with a guide. We stepped out into Hyrule Field just as time ran out and I got collected from his house to go home for dinner. Brilliant.

 

Also, the first time (and more or less any time after) I got into PvP in Eve and didn't die.

Seconded. I traded my Oblivion in for PS3 because I got bored with it. It was good but sometimes to do quests and find places you wanted to be could be a right PITA. One of my best Oblivion moments was killing the ogres that had taken over a house by sneakily using fireball spells where they could reach me and damaging their HP. Also geting the cutlass from one of the ships down by a dock and using that as my sole weapon was good.

I think I'll have to add the original Doom too. going from demo disks on PC mags to the shareware of Doom was amazing. And the atmosphere as well was really spot on, flickering lights and you could just hear the sounds somewhere of a monster. Even better when you think all the levels were created in 2D views. It was just a flat level that had no rooms on rooms etc

In no order other than the way they fall out my head:

 

 

Half Life has a special place with me - i used to play online on a 56k modem. Then HL2 came - i had it downloaded on steam before release date and it was unlocked at 7 in the morning and i took the day off work to play through what i still think is one of the greatest video games for a moment getting the uber gravity gun and the level " We Don't Go To Ravenholm"

 

The first big monster in Doom 3 which scared the life outta me when he is storming you and knocking the door in.

seeing Quake GL and thinking gfxs will never get better than this!

 

Getting a SNES and playing Super Mario world

 

Street fighter 2 on SNES

 

Very First go on a Wii

 

Hundreds of great online moments from Battlefield 1942 /BF:V/ BF2 on PC

 

and Now i have a moment a day in Halo Reach online only

 

and so many more i have no time to mention

it has to be the breach on cod black ops when you zip line down from the building and smash through the window to rescue your mate on campaign mode

As I'm so old my gaming history stretches back into the distant mists of early gaming. My top three are I think:

 

1. Completing The Hobbit on the Sinclair Spectrum. This took almost 30 attempts as a known bug in the game would cause it to crash when you told Bilbo to get in the barrel. I actually fixed the bug in my copy of the game myself out of frustration.

2. Shooting down the Red Baron in MicroProse's WWI flight simulation Knights of the Sky.

3. Completing the original Doom using just the chainsaw.

Mario Kart on the Snes (the original and best), beating special cup on 150cc, Rainbow road is the hardest track ever!

 

System Shock 2 as the whole thing was sooo scary, as was Half life when you were crawling through a vent with just a flashlight when a head crab jumps out. Definatley brown trousers time.

 

FF7 defeating sephiroth(sp?) in the final epic battle, though knights of the round made it much easier.

 

Zelda a link to the past again on the Snes, just an absolute classic!

 

and of course Goldeneye (and then Perfect Dark) for the N64 soooo many hours spent playing multiplayer death match, using floating mines on the bunker map, golden gun. no multiplayer console game has beaten it IMHO

My greatest gaming moment was playing for a CoD4 clan in the codleague.com league.

 

Playing a team from Cyprus who were notoriously laggy/dodgy who we managed to beat with me pulling off a solo defence of the Broadcast map when all my team mates had died, thus winning the league.

Also Final Fantasy VII when Aeris died was the ultimate tear jerker in a game.

Online original Half Life, there was a map with a nuclear bunker? You could go in and activate a nuke and then the blast door would start to close and there was a mad scramble when the klaxons went off with everyone simultaneously trying to get into the bunker before the door closed AND kill each other at the same time.....awesome.
