ITWombat Posted January 27, 2007 Posted January 27, 2007 Unlike .net 1.1 which has a substantial software base, 2.0 hasn't had that much time to gather momentum before 3.0 came out. Is it safe to skip 2.0 and go straight to 3.0 unless you're unlucky enough to be lumbered with an app that is tightly bound to 2.0
Norphy Posted January 27, 2007 Posted January 27, 2007 Theres no harm in having all three really. All they do is eat a little disk space. Either that or install it as you need it. I do have a couple of .net 2.0 apps so I generally install it.

The web searches I had done seemed to imply that 2.0 was a subset of 3.0 which was really something called WinFX. I just was just hoping that this meant that I could skip 2.0 altogether. Either that or install it as you need it. I do have a couple of .net 2.0 apps so I generally install it. Well bang goes that theory

ajbritton Posted January 28, 2007 Posted January 28, 2007 Same here chris - SIMS still hasn't recovered! That's interesting. .NET versions are supposed to sit along side each other and not interfere. Did you find out what happened?
MkII Posted January 28, 2007 Posted January 28, 2007 Not really. 1.1 put up a fight and I finally managed to remove it and re-install. My machine was one of a handful that had problems upgrading to 2.0. there was nothing you could put your finger on as a cause.

NetworkGeezer Posted February 2, 2007 Posted February 2, 2007 If you're running SIMS.net it appears you have no option but to install both before August. Capita are moving the SIMS DB to SQL Server 2005/Express and need both frameworks for that it would appear.
sahmeepee Posted February 2, 2007 Posted February 2, 2007 We've had some problems in SIMS.net on computers that didn't have 1.1 and 2.0 installed. Best to go for the whole shebang probably. When I installed .net 3.0 on a computer with 1.1 and 2.0 already on, the c: drive ended up with about 185MB less space.

mattx Posted February 2, 2007 Posted February 2, 2007 Funny this should come up - I've just finished re-imaging our ICT set of PCs and part of it was to install the latest ver of .net, along with IE7, and all the other usual updates.... I stuck all three on and its not caused a problem.......................yet.

PiqueABoo Posted February 3, 2007 Posted February 3, 2007 2.0 was a subset of 3.0 True. The dotNet 3.0 runtime installer is essentially: a) dotNet 2.0 b) New bits for presentation, comms, workflow. You can skip installing dotNet2.0 since installing dotNet 3.0 will do that for you.
