Quit with someone else..

Start exercising, it will be hard at first but within the first month you will notice how much more energy you have.

I gave up 10 years ago and it was the best move I ever made.

I used patches and followed the course at the required strength for the number of weeks on the packet. I/we had already banned smoking in the house and the car so that helped too as we weren't having visitors smoke in the house.

I found that what I needed to do was to try and avoid key smoking times and deliberately do something else instead, so, instead of going and having a ciggy as soon as I got up, I would go and make a cuppa and then go for a shower thus taking my mind off of what I would have been doing. Instead of having one straight after a meal, I'd go and wash up, again, avoiding that cigarette and also breaking up the habitual cigarette.

I also avoided situations whereby I would smoke lots ie the pub. I stopped going out for quite a while so avoided the urge to smoke in the pub (also helped save me some money).

I think the key here is that in order to give yourself the best chance, you need to make some key lifestyle changes (even if only temporary ... the pub).

You've made the first (and often hardest) move. Good luck, I promise you that you won't regret it.

Me and the other half gave up January 1st 2010 (New years resolution). We both had our last ones together at a new years eve party. It was tough for the first couple of months but neither of us have relapsed and we rarely think about it.

I found that not going outside at the pub helped, I also started playing 6-a-side 2-3 times a week.

We also quit without any help (patches or otherwise). We just went cold turkey, that was hard.

It will be tough, at times it will be awful but it gets easier every day, I promise.

I gave up smoking 5 years ago, I used patches but quit in 6 weeks, 2 weeks at each strength of patch.

I used sugar free polos to aid me, every time I felt like a cig I would have a polo intead, once you quit the polos are easy to kick.

5 years later I feel as if I have never wanted a cig, I don't get any cravings, not even if I stand next to someone who is smoking.

Go see your doctor who will put you in touch with your nearest cessation officer who will be able through a meeting, establish what type of treatment you will need.

This can be the patches or tablets which my wife (who is a cessation officer) has had the best results with (to date 97% success rate) and they can be got on prescription.

I stopped around 15 years ago using aversion therapy (got really drunk one day and smoked my head off with roll your own) I was later so ill with both the drink and the smoking I never touched another cigarette to this day it makes me want to throw up.

Anyway this is good advise about the cessation officer but it is up to you how you use it.

Good luck and take each day as it comes. :)

i did look into this the only problem was the appointments where in the day time and no evenings around our way which doesnt help, they lady mentioned a pill called Compix which you take while smoking for two weeks before you quit

Well done for getting this far! Try and take it one day at a time and find someone you can call when you crave a cigarette. Change your habits - if you always have a fag at the same place and time every day then do something different.

Exercise is a good idea - go for a brisk walk when you need a fag.

Don't worry about the future, live for the moment and rather than say: 'I'm NEVER having another cigarette', which is quite daunting, just say 'I am not having a cigarette NOW' or 'in the next hour' or 'day' or whatever you can cope with.

Good Luck :)

Me and the other half stopped 2 years ago - no patches or gum or anything. You need a good reason to stop (and I mean a good reason, not the lame old "i'll do it to save money"). For us, it was the birth of my niece - I hated being around her knowing I stunk of smoke.

We've never looked back since, although as Mattx says you can get a craving many many years later. I still get a craving every couple of weeks when at the pub, but it lasts all of 5 seconds and on with the night we go! I've known people stop for 40 years and then one day they start up again. Somebody said about energy being better - that wasn't the case for me. But my pockets are a lot heavier now at least.

I've tried before and failed, but those times I never had a decent reason to stop. We missed them, craved them, and got back on them. This time however, I knew it was for good, and from day one I never struggled and knew I would still be smoke free today. When it's right, it's easy.

And there's nothing better than being able to go to the doctors and when he says "Do you smoke?" you can reply in a smarmy manner with "well doc, no, I dont smoke". Take pride in being a reformed smoker, and rub it in peoples faces whenever you can. Just make sure you don't start smoking again so they can rub it back in your face!

Enjoy!

I'll be calling you later now then Witch x

E-Cigs for me

not so much quitting as switching to something with no carcinogens. Also doesn't stink, stain your hands and is much cheaper.

Felt the difference in my lungs over the past 3 months I've been on em - gotta say, pretty awesome Videos / E Liquid from Totally Wicked

You still get nicotine and a throat hit from em, just exhale water vapour, so its legal to do it indoors too :-)

Day 2 in the non smoking house!

Got home had no cravings after dinner , used a inhilator for a few minutes which just made me cough , but i had some of the worst nightmares i have had in a long time , including my ex standing at the bottom of my bed with a knife and smoking a fag lol ,

Well this morning I am positive and have a patch on again and chewing gum like crazy but feel confident I can see it through another day (At Least)
