R0M Posted June 10, 2010 Posted June 10, 2010 (edited) I'm not really sure where to put this, but what do other people think of the new Google home page? Personally I think it's Google trying to dress up like Bing and I don't like it. One of the things that I like about Google is its simple home page. Not cluttered like Yahoo or with random backgrounds like Bing. On a Side note dose anyone know how to get the "classic" look back? I saw I could change the background to white so I did that but the text (Google logo and advanced search and so on) is all in white too still so thats not great. Edited June 10, 2010 by R0M
dwhyte85 Posted June 10, 2010 Posted June 10, 2010 Certainly very pretty... but I like plain google... i'll use blackle from now on, that's supposed to be good for the environment.
amvc Posted June 10, 2010 Posted June 10, 2010 I liked google BECAUSE it was clean and free from junk, oh well, time to find another.
localzuk Posted June 10, 2010 Posted June 10, 2010 Certainly very pretty... but I like plain google... i'll use blackle from now on, that's supposed to be good for the environment. Its only any good for the environment if you use it on CRT screens. Black takes more energy to reproduce on an LCD screen than white. Also, what new google home page? Looks the same as it has for ages here... Or do you mean the white-ish text stuff? I'm pretty sure that's going to just be a short-term thing, much like their google doodles...
leco Posted June 10, 2010 Posted June 10, 2010 Don't often see the home page usually just search. Perhaps I'm missing something:D
dayzd Posted June 10, 2010 Posted June 10, 2010 Ugh! What have they done? Can't say I'm a fan at all... ...Now I'm really glad I have a custom (local) homepage that will bypass that when I search and take me directly to the results page!
R0M Posted June 10, 2010 Author Posted June 10, 2010 I just saw a link in the bottom left corner that I could swear wasn't there before that says "Remove background Image" but maybe I overlooked it because it would have been white text on white background.
kevbaz Posted June 10, 2010 Posted June 10, 2010 I just saw a link in the bottom left corner that I could swear wasn't there before that says "Remove background Image" but maybe I overlooked it because it would have been white text on white background. you can change the background to what ever you like, but only if you have a google account, so you must have logged in as then you get the remove background option
danrhodes Posted June 10, 2010 Posted June 10, 2010 (edited) Personally I like the new Homepage, Ive got a lovely green national trust forest background, very calming! D Edited June 10, 2010 by danrhodes
Gatt Posted June 10, 2010 Posted June 10, 2010 interestingly, if you go to google.com - there is no background - but a link to change it is there...
Gatt Posted June 10, 2010 Posted June 10, 2010 Ok found it! Go to "Change Background Image* - Editor Picks - scroll to the bottom - choose "white" *Bottom Left corner - its not very visible but its there (try CTRL-A to select the entire page)
ict_support Posted June 10, 2010 Posted June 10, 2010 Does this mean the google doodler is out of a job! I know the conservatives are cutting back but who would of thought they would be this far reaching
Hightower Posted June 10, 2010 Posted June 10, 2010 I use iGoogle anyway so my homepage is full of junk (but the good junk that I use!)
danrhodes Posted June 10, 2010 Posted June 10, 2010 Ahhh the "good Junk" I have loads of that stuff at home! ;-) D
EvLPhenom Posted June 10, 2010 Posted June 10, 2010 I just saw a link in the bottom left corner that I could swear wasn't there before that says "Remove background Image" but maybe I overlooked it because it would have been white text on white background. I only seen this when i changed to a backround image that was full screen. i have to say i'm not too fussed about this but i prefer the "clean" look of the basic google home page.
sidewinder Posted June 10, 2010 Posted June 10, 2010 Hmm, create a google account and keep signed in just for a background image? no thanks
penfold Posted June 10, 2010 Posted June 10, 2010 Hmm, create a google account and keep signed in just for a background image? no thanks Exactly, not very easy for read for those who struggle reading text on coloured background...especially when the text is over the yellow parts. Like many I used google because it was simple and not cluttered. At the moment I go through the firefox goolge page which is still simple, but I dont like the new design. Whats that old saying...."if it 'aint broke..."
danrhodes Posted June 10, 2010 Posted June 10, 2010 Hmm, create a google account and keep signed in just for a background image? no thanks True, Im not a fan of the web serach history feature of iGoogle, I've turned it off on my account!
Martin Posted June 10, 2010 Posted June 10, 2010 If (under Firefox) you forbid Google via NoScript you don't get the background. I use AltaVista (the original and best, but then i did used to work for DEC ) and that has a nice, simple, clear search page. mb
EduTech Posted June 10, 2010 Posted June 10, 2010 Hmm, create a google account and keep signed in just for a background image? no thanks Yup! As far as i can see this is just away of google getting more information / users on there database.. they are following microsoft on the LIVE ID seen me thinks. James.
pauljonze Posted June 10, 2010 Posted June 10, 2010 Well it's clear they're using it to find more out about your web habits.. but is there any need to poke you in the eye with that image? My eyes still hurt!
gumbygaz Posted June 10, 2010 Posted June 10, 2010 I'm assuming there's not a way of stopping it then... Just I'm wondering how long it'll be before the kids start bringing pictures in or downloading risque images to set as their google homepage background... Its not a huge problem as I guess, assume it'll reset each they they log off & on anyway... Will go and have a play!
danrhodes Posted June 10, 2010 Posted June 10, 2010 It's started here already with kids having personal background and the teacher going mad as thats all they want to do in lessons!! D
gumbygaz Posted June 10, 2010 Posted June 10, 2010 Marvellous! That didn't take long then! Was just thinking about trying to block http://www.google.co.uk/accounts that way google is ok, but they can't log into google to change the background.... Can't see why I've have any problems with that?
